| Jan-19-10 | | Jim Bartle: That was along the Chile-Argentina border, though. A rugby team. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> Looking at your Peruvan hideaway reminds me that about 2 blocks from my house there is a small rise of about 10-15 feet in the road. Supposedly, this is the highest natural point in the city of Detroit. And it probably doesn't even get as icy as your spot. |
| Jan-20-10 | | A.G. Argent: Jim, are you saying your house is up there somewhere? Probably an Ok view but there must be tremendous pressure to over-tip the pizza delivery guy. |

| Jan-20-10 | | playground player: Here's one for real baseball fans. How many movies can you think of that had baseball players playing characters who were not baseball players? I could only think of three: 1. Roy White (Yankees) as a doctor in "The Premonition." 2. Mickey Lolich (Padres) as a security guard in "The Incredible Melting Man." 3. Bucky Dent (Yankees) as a wide receiver in made-for-TV "Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders." It may be said that these were not exactly screen gems--but maybe you were expecting Jerry Coleman in "Citizen Kane"? Can anybody think of some other examples? NOTE: I'm not counting movies in which baseball players play themselves, or other baseball players. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> This is not my area, but I do remember <Chuck Connors>, who was eternally grateful to the Cubs for demoting him to their minor league team in Los Angeles: (http://bioproj.sabr.org/bioproj.cfm...). |
Jan-20-10
 | | Phony Benoni: WAIT A MINUTE! What's this Mickey Lolich <(Padres)> stuff? |
| Jan-21-10 | | Jim Bartle: I think Wes Parker was in a number of TV shows and low-budget movies. There must be more Dodgers who have moved on to movies. Of course football is the sport which has sent the most players into movies. Mark Harmon has been the most successful, OJ the most notorious, and others include Alex Karras, Bernie Casey, Dick Butkus, Bubba Smith, etc. |
Jan-21-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Steve Garvey did a few movies, which I guess is no surprise. And Johnny Berardino, a reserve infielder for the Indians back in the 40s, made a name for himself on some soap opera (General Hospital?). |
| Jan-21-10 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> Mickey Lolich was wrapping up his career when he acted in "The Incredible Melting Man." Without looking it up, I believe he had moved on from the Mets to the Padres. I remember Johnny Berardino as a TV actor. Didn't Bill Veeck have Berardino's face insured, as a publicity stunt? Of course I didn't forget Chuck Connors. It's just that I think of him more as a very successful actor who happened to play a little baseball. In case anyone is wondering, I still wouldn't count "Safe at Home" even if Mickey Mantle had played Roger Maris and Maris had played Mantle. |
Jan-21-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Bill Veeck. If any baseball figure deserves a biopic, it would be him. |
| Jan-21-10 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: I think one of the Dodgers appeared on "Leave It To Beaver". Oh, yeah, <Bartle> Coakley referred to Schilling as a Yankee fan in a radio interview, but backtracked when the interviewer said "Schilling, with the bloody sock, was a Yankee fan??" And earlier she had said, when questioned about her low-key campaign, "You want me standing in the cold outside Red Sox Stadium?" |
| Jan-21-10 | | Jim Bartle: Did she say "Red Sox Stadium"? Probably lost the election right there. Sort of like John Kerry being happy to be speaking at "Lambert Field" in 2004. |
| Jan-21-10 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: <Bartle> I think so, but my memory is getting bad with age. |
Jan-21-10
 | | Phony Benoni: I can't find any source for "Red Sox Stadium" (thank goodness; she probably would have been lynched for that.) The whole business apparently started on a radio program when she accused her opponent of being a Yankees fan. When reminded that Curt Schilling supported Brown, she derided Schilling as a Yankees fan as well. http://news.bostonherald.com/news/p... And just in case you still can't believe it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmNp...
Schilling, who considered running for the seat himself as a Republican, had a field day on his blog. http://38pitches.weei.com/sports/bo... |
| Jan-22-10 | | Jim Bartle: I suspect she was commenting on campaigning outside the outdoor NHL game played at Fenway a few weeks ago. |
| Jan-22-10 | | Travis Bickle: Dr Benoni & all you sports fans here's a clip on "Sweetness" #34!! 3 words power, elusive & tough. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAeo... |
| Jan-22-10 | | Jim Bartle: Gotta give it up to the fans for the basketball knowledge: Allan Iverson, All-Star Game starter. |
Jan-22-10
 | | Phony Benoni: I think they're just tired of all those high-scoring shootouts. |
Jan-22-10
 | | WannaBe: Okay, another 'stat' that I just saw on ESPN, Minnesota is 0-4 in their last 4 NFC Championship games... (Now, 'course, going by <Jim Bartle>'s logic, they are 'due'! :-) |
Jan-23-10
 | | Phony Benoni: I apologize for that last outburst. I just get tired of these irrelevant statistics that tell nothing about the game. What I'd like to know are some reasons behind New Orleans' win over Minnesota earlier in the year. Was it a blowout, or a lucky win where the outcome was decided by a single play that could have gone either way? Does the New Orleans offense or defense present a special challenge that generally gives the Vikings trouble? Have the Vikings shown the ability to fix what went wrong in the first game? These sort of questions are relevant to how I would bet. Whether the Vikings have lost four conference finals over the last twenty years has nothing to do with this team. |
Jan-23-10
 | | WannaBe: 1. The Vikings, for that matter, New Orleans Saints, did not play each other, the 2009-2010 season, they did not play in the pre-season, regular season, and they will finally get their due this Sunday. 2. I read your previous post, <Phony Benoni>, and I do not belive, think, thought of it (the post), as an outburst. 3. One thing, that I learned from my Intro to Statistics class (The professor did nothing but recite from the text book, which itself, costed me 45 dollars, back in 1991!!) is this: "If you want to learn how to lie truthfully, learn statistics" I learned nothing else from this professor...
4. Being a sports fan, these talking heads on TV wants to show/prove/tell you something you didn't know! If the Vikings should win, and reach the Super Bowl, well, they are 0-4!! 5. If the New Orleans Saints should win, (they have never been to a Super Bowl, and also, they have never hosted a Conference Championship game, 0-1, for those of you keeping 'stats'.) 6. I love discussing sports on this page. Especially all the baseball talk, just wish that <talisman> would jump in once in awhile with a juice bit of 'gossip'!! |
Jan-23-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> For me, it was an outburst. Yesterday was a bad day. Normally, I would check important facts like who gave Minnesota their first loss this year. Somehow, I had it in my mind that it came at New Orleans instead of Pittsburgh. And you wonder why I don't bet on games?
By the way, I enjoy statistics, possibly because I never took a class in the subject. Just don't start tossing in all those little subscripts and superscripts. To my mind, one of the great advantages of the Internet is that nobody knows how to produce them on a computer. |
| Jan-23-10 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> If Joe Kapp couldn't win a Super Bowl for the Vikings, nobody could. |
Jan-23-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> And Brett Favre is no Joe Kapp. I find it hard to root against any team this weekend. The Saints, of course, are the Saints, and if they win it gives hope to the Lions. The Jets are gutsy underdogs. The Colts are the epitome of excellence, and I've always admired teams that are simply darn good at what they do. And I have to admit that part of me is rooting for Brett Favre. At the beginning of the season, I never would have suspected this would happen. I generally root for irony, and the most ironical Super Bowl match-up would be a reunion between Favre and the Jets. Statistic to look up: do the Jets have a better record when Favre plays for them or against them? Or did he do both at the same time? |
