Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Feb-18-10  playground player: Warren Spahn didn't need no stinkin' bullpen...
Feb-18-10  Jim Bartle: I saw a profile of Juan Marichal on ESPN Internacional, and they asked him about the 1963 16-inning game against Spahn. He never used just Spahn's last name, just kept saying "warraspahn" again and again.

Feb-18-10  Jim Bartle: What happened? I'm watching the second half of Syracuse-Georgetown, and Syracuse is throwing in 3s from every angle, and leading by something like 63-39. So I flip over to the Olympics, and when I flip back for a moment, it's 67-63 and a Georgetown guy throws down a monster dunk.

Somehow Syracuse held on to win, as Georgetown couldn't make a free throw.

Phony Benoni: I'll believe it when he pricks his thumb and signs his name in blood, provided that doesn't put him on the DL. It's been one of those lengthy courtships, with a lot of rocky interludes. Makes you wonder how much he really wants to come here. I understand his wife was against it.

He would fill one hole by providing a good lead-off hitter. But his defensive liabilities would be more pronounced at Comerica Field. Problem is that he can't DH, that spot being reserved for Carlos Guillen.

But it never hurts to bring in a proven winner who still has some gas in the tank.

Phony Benoni: I just happened to be looking at Game 7 of the 1960 World Series:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

That was the series where the Yankees outscored the Pirates by a 2-1 margin, including victories by socres of 16-3, 12-0, and 10-0, but still managed to lose the series. The 7th game ended 10-9 in Pittsburgh's favor when Bill Mazeroski homered in the bottom of the ninth.

What I find interesting is that the Pirates had 14 baserunners in the game on 11 hits and three walks. 10 of the runners scored. Three were erased on double plays. <They left only one man on base the entire game.>

That's taking advantage of your opportunities.

Feb-20-10  Jim Bartle: One man left on?

The Mazeroski home run produced a lot of great photos, but I particularly like this one: http://www.sportsposterwarehouse.co...

Feb-20-10  Jim Bartle: I find this interesting, from the 8th inning of that game:

"Berra grounded out (first unassisted) [McDougald scored, Mantle stayed at first];"

What happened? I can only guess that a ball was hit to the first baseman, who stepped on first, then got Mantle in a rundown, and he made it back to first. Or maybe the first baseman touched first, threw home trying to get McDougald, and Mantle was just a few steps off first and went back rather than trying for second.

Phony Benoni: This article contains an in-depth retelling of the play:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/b...

By the way, don't blame the Pirates for having Rocky Nelson at first base in that situation. The alternative was Dick Stuart.

Feb-20-10  Jim Bartle: I stand in awe of your research skills, PB.

You're right that Mantle erred there. If he'd been tagged before McDougald scored, the run wouldn't have counted. Maybe he was thinking of the chance of scoring more runs, as the Yanks had been doing all Series long (55 runs).

The story also mentions Lonnie Smith not scoring on that double in game 7 of the 91 Series. But the announcers didn't even mention it at the time, just saying Smith stopped at third. And the Braves still had runners on second and third <with nobody out>. The middle of the order couldn't score him from third with three shots at it (actually two, as there was a double play), so I don't see why Smith is the goat.

Phony Benoni: Another odd thing about the Pirates - Yankees game 7: no strikeouts!

Yes, Smith made the smart percentage play. Just the outcome made him look dumb.

Feb-20-10  Jim Bartle: Damon signs with Detroit, one year $8 M.

Phony Benoni: OK, we'll see how that works out. Tigers have an awful lot of question marks this year; for example, replacing All-Stars in center field and at second base with untested rookies. If things don't go right, it's going to be a long, long season full of 2-1 losses.
Feb-20-10  Jim Bartle: Well, last time the Tigers signed a big-name player I just laughed at how ridiculous it was, for the player. That was Ivan Rodriguez and that worked out OK.

Phony Benoni: Somewhat different situation with Rodriguez, coming from a World Champion to a team that had lost 119 games. The Tigers were close last year, and having Damon might have made the difference. Now, with a lot of those pieces missing, it's a bit of a crap shoot.
Feb-21-10  playground player: Can anybody tell me why Rick Ferrell and Ray Schalk are in the Hall of Fame, and Thurman Munson isn't?
Feb-21-10  Jim Bartle: Serious answer: I think different standards were often applied to the old-timers, and their records were somewhat romanticized.
Feb-21-10  Deus Ex Alekhina: Now that Damon has escaped the pinstripes will he grow out his hair & beard? The caveman look helps to distract from his fielding.
Feb-21-10  Jim Bartle: I wanted to ask that same question. What's the Tiger policy on grooming?

Phony Benoni: Leyland generally lets players go their own way, but I think he has limits. Loose limits--remember that mop Magglio OrdoƱez wore for several years?--but he doesn't care that much if the on-field performance is there. The Caveman look may be pushing it, though.
