Mar-13-10 | | Travis Bickle: Ok how about Carlton Fisk? |
Mar-13-10 | | talisman: john roseboro |
Mar-13-10 | | playground player: Sorry, guys--no right answer yet. <Professor Benoni> knows the answer, but he ain't tellin'. |
Mar-13-10 | | A.G. Argent: Hey, Czar, how're you doing? |
Mar-13-10
 | | Phony Benoni: OK, enough kidding around. Look for yourself:
http://members.tripod.com/bb_catche... If a number does not appear before a name, then that was the player's only no-hitter. <talisman> Roseboro crossed my mind as well, but he only cuaght two of Koufax's no-hitters. An interesting fact I wouldn't have guessed: Nolan Ryan's 7 no-hitters involved 7 different catchers! <A.G. Argent> I'll know more Wednesday; have a couple of eye appointments that day. |
Mar-13-10 | | Travis Bickle: Glad to see "The Baseball Czar" back!! |
Mar-13-10 | | Benzol: Dave I'm rather dismayed to read of your eye troubles on Peters' forum. Hope things work out OK. No amount of collecting or collections is worth your sight. Take care of yourself mate. :) |
Mar-14-10 | | playground player: OK, OK, I'll tell--Jason Varitek, Red Sox, caught 4 no-hitters. Betcha didn't know Jeff Torborg caught three. |
Mar-14-10 | | Travis Bickle: The CUBS Randy Hundley caught 2 no no's. Who were the pitchers? |
Mar-14-10 | | Jim Bartle: Ferguson Jenkins and Burt Hooton.
And I think we know why Ryan threw each no-hitter to a different catcher. He wore them out! |
Mar-14-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> I see Torborg caught no-hitters from both Sandy Koufax and Nolan Ryan. Wonder if he's ever compared them. <Travis> Checking the link I gave above, I see the pitchers were <Bert Hooton Hears a Who> and <Milt Mammas and the Pappas>, and both occurred in 1972, which is unusual but not unprecented. Hank Severeid caught no-hitters on successive days (May 5-6, 1917), though not successive games; the one on the 6th was the second game of a doubleheader. And what was going on in 1917? The two no-hitters by the Browns were already the fourth and fifth of the year. There had been two in April, then the "double no-hitter" from Fred Toney and Hippo Vaughn on May 2nd. |
Mar-15-10 | | Jim Bartle: I remember the Orioles traded Pappas when he was pretty good. Did they get anybody worthwhile in return? |
Mar-15-10 | | playground player: <Jim Bartle> I think they got Frank Robinson, who wasn't that awful. But Milt Pappas had some pretty nice career credentials. He never won 20 games in a season, but he won a lot of games. (If I knew how to look things up while kibitzing, I'd tell you how many--but it was around 200.) |
Mar-15-10
 | | Phony Benoni: 209 to be exact, and he nearly got 100 in both leagues (110 AL, 99 NL). Probably the perfect #2 or #3 starter. He never won more than 17, but was consistent with 14 of 17 years in double figures and only a couple of losing seasons. Besides the no-hitter, he had a one-hitter and a few two-hitters. Here's one of those, a performance that even Frank Robinson would have envied. Not to mention Brooks or Earl. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... |
Mar-15-10 | | Travis Bickle: Hello Dr. Benoni! Ya know with baseball season just around the corner I thought it would be appropriate to play a baseball tune on "The Baseball Czar's" Forum! So without further ado here's John Fogerty live in Chicago a few seasons back with his Baseball shaped Guitar! ; P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaHO... |
Mar-15-10 | | Travis Bickle: Ok Mr Benoni here's an intense 1! I especially enjoy the last clip of this short video when The Cubs catcher Punches The white sux hitter aj pierzynski right on the sweet spot! ; P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pSH... |
Mar-15-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Mr. Bickle, with all due respect to the brawlers of Chicago (and we'd better be sure to give all we have!), I don't know if they could cut it in Detroit. This is what you have to do before you're even allowed to broadcast a game around here, much less play: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSxF... Yes, this is one of the successors to Ernie Harwell. |
Mar-15-10 | | Travis Bickle: Dr. Benoni that's quite a catchy tune! I enjoyed it. But I wouldn't exactly call those guys brawlers, they looked more like bawlers LOL!! We got guys in Chicago drinking beer all day in the cheap seats could fight better than that! ; P |
Mar-16-10 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> Welcome back! I used to call Milt Pappas "Milt Popeye" when I was a kid. Looking at the Retrosheet box score, you can see why. |
Mar-16-10
 | | Phony Benoni: So how do I find all the baseball stuff? Mainly through stream of consciousness. Here's a typical sequence. Looking at the Milt Pappas game I linked to earlier, I noticed the losing pitcher (who gave up the two home runs to Pappas) was Pedro Ramos. I wonder if he ever pitched a no-hitter? No, but he did pitch a one-hitter against the Tigers on July 19, 1960. Looking at the play-by-play, I see that game marked the debut of Phil Regan. Well, I wonder if anybody else debuted on that day. Juan Marichal! How did he do? Pitched a one-hitter! Oh, yeah, I think JB pointed that out once. Let's see what else happened. Well, the Yankess beat the Indians 13-11 with a five-run rally in the ninth. That looks interesting. What's this? Bob Cerv batting lead-off, and Bobby Richardson batting eighth? Did Stengel accidentally fill out his batting order in reverse? Let's look at a few more Yankee line-ups from that year. What's this? Roger Maris is the leadoff hitter on Opening Day? I wonder... No! No! Must drag myself away before it's too late! |
Mar-17-10 | | Travis Bickle: Happy St Patricks Day to Jim Bartle who I just bet is an Irishman!! Happy St. Patty's to you too Mr. Benoni & all you sports fans out there! ; P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EPs... |
Mar-17-10 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> At least you aren't trying to remember successful left-handed submarine pitchers. Ted Abernathy, Kent Tekulve, Dan Quisenberry--all the good ones were right-handed. And yes, I know it's because there are more right-handed hitters to pitch to. |
Mar-17-10 | | A.G. Argent: <...stream of consciousness.> Well, now Czar, there ya go; putting into words what I always intuited was your trade secret; being akin to something like a cross between Bill Veeck and James Joyce. And keep in mind what Paul Fisher, sportswriter of the NY Post said: "A passion for statistics is the earmark of a literate people". HEY, THAT'S US! (Well, you anyway) And speaking of us, for our sake, please ignore people like Jim Bouton who said "Statistics are about as interesting as first base coaches." Or that Toby Harrah thinks "They both (bikinis and statistics) show a lot but not everything". What do they know, I bet they never heard of the Nimzo-Indian. |
Mar-17-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <Or that Toby Harrah thinks "They both (bikinis and statistics) show a lot but not everything".> Perhaps. But what they show is well worth looking at. By the way, I've got cataract surgery scheduled for the April 13th. As the obstetrician said, "I think everything will come out just fine." |
Mar-17-10 | | Travis Bickle: I like to keep track of the statistics in the bikinis! ; P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXiX... |
