Mar-05-10 | | Travis Bickle: Dr. Benoni I hope you're doing great! I have some breaking sports news for you and you sports fans out there. Be advised! The Chicago Bears in the free agent market just signed DE Julius Peppers at 3 yrs. 40 mil. a sack monster! Also The Bears signed arch enemy Minnesota Vikings RB Chester Taylor a great pass catching back to a 12.5 million dollar deal! In addition with Mike Martz now as offensive coordinator The Bears got Martz a great blocking TE in Brandon Manumaleuna who comes from the San Diego Chargers! All we need now sports fans is 2 offensive linemen and the pieces are in place. Yeah baby!! |
|
Mar-05-10 | | Jim Bartle: Three years, $40 million? Unbelievable. He's already 30, wonder if he'll keep up his play. At least the Bears improved their basketball team. |

Mar-05-10 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle: Three years, $40 million? Unbelievable. He's already 30, wonder if he'll keep up his play.> He's coming into his prime Jim. Ask Dan Hampton how he played at age 30 or Reggie White? |
|
Mar-06-10 | | Jim Bartle: Hope so. |

Mar-06-10 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle: Hope so.> No you don't, you're a niners fan. ; P |

Mar-07-10 | | Travis Bickle: <A.G. Argent> Ryan Leaf and Tony Mandarich have to be the two biggest hyped college busts of all time! Next to Pam Anderson's. ; P |

Mar-07-10 | | Travis Bickle: I just caught the tail end of Bryd & Magic last night. Man those guys are really great friends! I'll have to watch it from the beginning when they aire it again. |
|
Mar-07-10 | | Travis Bickle: Hurry back Phony with a speedy recovery! Chessgames is not the same without you! Your encyclopedic knowledge on chess and baseball are missed. Plus I miss your great sense of humor Dr. Benoni. ; P |

Mar-09-10 | | Jim Bartle: Greatest season ever in the NBA, measured by scoring per minute? Undoubtedly George Lee for the 66-67 San Francisco Warriors, who shot .750 from the field and scored 86.7 points per 36 minutes played. On the other hand, he played the entire season without a single rebound or assist. What happened? He only played in one game, for five minutes, and shot 3-4 from the field and 6-7 from the line. I think he was an assistant coach (to Bill Sharman) and filled in one night when a lot of players were injured. |

Mar-09-10 | | playground player: Any word on <phony's> state of health? Nothin' bad better happen to him! |

 | | Phony Benoni: Thanks to all for the kind wishes. I really should provide some details. I've had eye trouble all my life. Both eyes are extremely myopic, and I have amblyopia in the right eye to boot. Also, a couple of bouts of retinal bleeding due to diabetic retinopathy have required laser surgery. Those condidtions have stabilized, but now the problem is cataracts. The surgery to remove them is routine for most people, but in my case the eye structure has been so weakened the doctors fear surgery could start the bleeding again. Hence they are being very cautious about removing them. I'm still able to function well enough to work. However, my job requires full time computer work, and even adaptative enhancements don't ease the strain. So I've been avoiding using the computer at home for a while to see what would happen. There's been enough relief that I'm going to continue doing this. I will pop in more frequently--the strain of going a whole week without posting was just too much. But I'll have to give up prolonged work for now. In particular, I won't be building game collections; there's just too much time and effort involved in doing those right. It's possible I may finally get the cataracts removed later this year, since they have grown to the point that my eyes can no longer be properly examined. If that's successful, I should be able to get back to full strength. Again, thanks again for the kind wishes. And thanks for continuing to post in the spirit I've tried to maintain around here. |

Mar-10-10 | | Travis Bickle: Good to hear from you Dr. Benoni!! Although for now you're only here temporarily this calls for a song for The Good Librarian!! Best wishes for a great recovery! ; P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnLT... |

Mar-10-10 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> Last year my wife had "bloodless cataract surgery." It was all done in half an hour, and when she got up from the chair, she could see perfectly out of that eye--for the first time in years. The other eye still needs to be done, but we haven't gotten to it yet. Of course, your condition sounds very different from hers. But if you want to come out to New Jersey, we've got one of the best cataract surgeons in the world right down the road. |
|
Mar-10-10 | | A.G. Argent: Czar, what a coinckidink; you and the other highly regarded David here at CG, Dave Zechiel, have been absent and missed by many, both with eye problems. Him with a detached retina. But also both close to being on the mend and off the DL, which is what's called for. |
|
Mar-11-10 | | suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> I'm relieved that it is nothing more serious, Dave. However, my father developed cataracts not too long ago to such an extent that they impaired his ability to drive safely. He was able to have them removed and is now perfectly fine to drive, but your condition sounds little trickier. I hope they find a solution for you before it gets too debilitating. I'll keep working on the Hastings tournaments of course, but I think I've collected all the events that were complete in the database by this point. So you won't be seeing any new ones for the index for a couple of months, once I've had a chance to upload hundreds of Hastings games. In the meantime, if you're giving your eyes a break from the computer I could recommend some nice music diversions to give your ear a workout. Let me know :) |
|
Mar-12-10 | | playground player: I don't pretend to be able to fill <phony benoni's> shoes, but here's a baseball question for youse, dear colleagues--what catcher caught the most no-hitters? |
|
Mar-12-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> I'm sure any diehard Yankees fan will know that one. |
|
Mar-12-10 | | Travis Bickle: Yogi Berra? |
