Mar-01-10 | | Jim Bartle: I don't even have to look.
In 1962 Al Attles was the Warrior's second highest scorer, shooting 8 for 8. But Wilt scored 100. Less severe, Jamaal Wilkes scored 37 in game 6 of the NBA finals in 1980. But it went little noticed as Magic went for 41 with 15 rebounds and 7 assists in Kareem's absence. |

Mar-02-10 | | playground player: Computer prombles yesterday, so no kibitzing.
<Phony Benoni> I knew you'd do it! All 3 Alous in the Giants' outfield at the same time, albeit for just an inning or two. <Jim Bartle> I read the Einstein book and enjoyed it very much, but the review doesn't inspire me to read Hamill's. Y'know, my family was upset when the Giants left New York--so we listened to their games on the radio. A lot of people did. Our 4th-grade teacher used to begin most days with a discussion of the Giants' game. Those games were on the radio until the Mets came along in 1962: no more Giants after that. I think that's about when Western civilization began to deteriorate. |
|
Mar-02-10 | | Travis Bickle: <playground player> I received the Albert Einstein book for Christmas but I still havent read it. It's a coin flip between that book & another book I have, on the greatest horse that ever lived Secretariat! |
|
Mar-02-10 | | Jim Bartle: PP: You mean the Charles Einstein book, not the Albert Einstein book. Haven't read it, but the difference is that Einstein was there in San Francisco and witnessed what happened. Einstein was a controversial columnist, always saying outlandish things but also pretty observant. I did read his book "A Flag for San Francisco," which was about the 1961 pennant race. Not a typo--1961. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Retrosheet continues to carve a place in my heart. Box scores are now available for 1945-1948, which means we can see George Kell's worst game: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... The worst part is that they had to play a doubleheader the next day to make up the tie. Kell played both games--and went hitless again. And, no, it's not a record. The immortal Charlie Pick went 0-for-11 in that 26-inning tie between Brooklyn and Boston in 1920. |

Mar-02-10 | | suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> Another tournament for the index: Game Collection: Hastings 1973/74 My productivity has slowed because it seems in 1971/72 the playing field increased to 16 players, making the collections now 120 games to assemble. Eventually it tapes down to 14 players at 91 games and then done to 8 players playing doule rounds for 56 games, but for now it will be slow going as I update the index. How are things with you? ;) |

Mar-03-10 | | playground player: C'mon, guys! I never said "Albert" Einstein! It's Charles, and he wrote a very fine book about Willie Mays. An Albert Einstein book about Willie Mays would surely have included a discussion of the curved space in Candlestick Park. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Not to mention the black hole in centerfield back at the Polo Grounds, or the overhanging warp in the space-time coninuum down the right field line. |
|
Mar-03-10 | | Jim Bartle: I saw some curved space in Candlestick park while sitting in the rightfield stands (in the early years, before the two-level stands were built). I saw some drives to left--I remember a couple by catcher Bob Barton--which just seemed to turn and go straight up while above left field. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Just wanted the gang to know I'll be taking a break for a while. I've got some health issues that have bothered me for some time and need to be addressed, so I won't be on the computer nearly as much. Don't worry; this is nothing serious and I expect to be back at full strength by Opening Day. Besides, I just renewed my premium membership for three years, so I'll be around. And I will be checking in from time to time, so if this suddenly turns into a second incarnation of the Rogoff page there's gonna be a whole lot of <MEEPing> going on! |

 | | Open Defence: < Phony Benoni > get well soon! |
|
Mar-03-10 | | Travis Bickle: Here's wishing you a speedy recovery Dr. Benoni!! |
|
Mar-03-10 | | Jim Bartle: Hope you feel better soon. In the meantime I'll work on learning how to navigate retrosheet. |

 | | chancho: <Phony Benoni> You better get better soon, man. :-)
Your health comes first, no question.
We'll be looking forward to your return. |

Is this weird? Well, I thought laughing is quite a good medicine. :D |

Mar-03-10 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: When the cat's away, the mice will play; hey Travis, gimme back my cheese! |
|
Mar-03-10 | | Travis Bickle: <Deus Ex Alekhina> Sorry grunt you'll have to make due! I'm the fat cat in this outfit soldier! Semper Fi Do Or Die!! Gung Ho Gung Ho!!! |
|
Mar-04-10 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> Get well soon, man! Your forum is truly an oasis where un-like-minded persons (like <Jim Bartle> and me) can drink in peace. You have a right to be proud of that. |
|
Mar-04-10 | | suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> I hope you feel better very soon. I should have about 20-25 Hastings tournaments for you upon your return :) |
|
Mar-04-10 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: <Travis> No cheese? OK, jarhead, let me make you feel at home: Hit the deck, maggot, and give me 25! And 25 more for your beloved corps! You didn't want to live forever did you - then why did you become a leatherneck? And 25 more for the commandant! |
|
Mar-05-10 | | A.G. Argent: Ok, Czar, this is for you; we've had our first plunking already and it was your boys, Jim. You see that? Zito hitting Fielder yesterday? But it was an accident! Riiiight. Remember the bowling ball recreation at home plate after the walk-off HR last year? Zito: (if the quote is accurate and strung together as this is)," My fast ball was running in and just got away from me. It's not like we've thought about (the celebration) for months and months." So, all is right. Lay low, David, take care of your self. |
|
Mar-05-10 | | Jim Bartle: Hold on there, AG. Have you seen Prince Fielder?
I mean, how can you avoid hitting him?
Actually, seems the Giants, and Fielder, handled it OK. Zito hit him in the back, not the head, with the first pitch, in an exhibition game. (Plus Zito is not exactly the second coming of Nolan Ryan.) Fielder trots down to first as if he expected it. Afterwards Zito says "Who me?", and the whole thing is resolved without a melee. |
|
Mar-05-10 | | A.G. Argent: Yeah, it was great, wasn't it? The ritual retaliation is in the books, in a fairly harmless, matter-of-fact way, the press gets something to write about, we're all reminded that they are indeed playing exhibition ball and everybody's happy. |
|
Mar-05-10 | | Jim Bartle: Yes, they're playing. Though this game made me wonder which sport: St. Louis.... 11
New York....17 |
