Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

This, can only mean one thing, and one thing only, <THIS IS DODGERS' YEAR!!>

Apr-02-10  Jim Bartle: One guy picked the <Giants> to win the Series?? I mean, maybe the wild card, but anything more...

And about the Dodgers' year, wannabe, you mean as in this year?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvqO...

Apr-02-10  dakgootje: JINTS!

I'd love to see them win the Series [or the white sox], but those are some long odds

Apr-02-10  Jim Bartle: I think teams should win when they have strong teams, strong in all or most departments. Giants right now are really heavy on pitching and defense, not much hitting.

Well, they were that previous season but I think they have invested in some hitters [and improved their pitching even further with the addition of Wellemeyer]. Lincecum struggled in spring training, though his last outing was good.

All in all, if hitting improves a bit compared to previous season I would not be at all surprised if they take over the Dodgers.

Note how the Giants scored their 13th run in the first inning.

Apr-03-10  Jim Bartle: And they took Mathewson out after one inning? And let some nobody finish the game. Maybe they thought he'd stiffened up too much during the bottom of the inning.

Phony Benoni: My supposition was that Mathewson was being save for a more important game, but he didn't pitch again for five days.

I do find it interesting that Mathewson was awarded a win; obviously there have been some rule changes there. What's even more interesting is Marquard getting an eight-inning save. Now that's not easy.

Phony Benoni: Not that Butler is in the championship game, I'm rooting for Duke so we can have the Ultimate Upstairs Downstairs Game.
Apr-03-10  Jim Bartle: I made a similar comment on one of the other pages when Butler won last week. How many versions of that joke will we hear (if Duke wins)?

Phony Benoni: Way too many. I just wanted to get my licks in early.

And it does work on another level, Duke being part of the aristocracy of college basketball while Butler is part of the downtrodden working class. However, West Virginia has yet to be heard from.

Apr-03-10  Jim Bartle: I gotta go against West Virginia. Their coach Bob Huggins was one of the sleaziest of the breed when he was at Cincinnati. I'm surprised he got another job.

And for all the disdain of Duke as as spoiled brats, the team has always been squeaky clean, according to the NCAA.

Apr-03-10  crawfb5: <Jim Bartle: And for all the disdain of Duke as as spoiled brats, the team has always been squeaky clean, according to the NCAA.>

That starts at the top. Krzyzewski played for Bob Knight at West Point. He has <very> high graduation rates for his players, and I'm sure if he found any of them involved in even a fraction of the kinds of nonsense that happens at some other programs, he'd put his foot <so> far up...

Apr-03-10  Jim Bartle: It's not just the players who have to toe the line, it's the coaching staff, the athletic department, and the boosters.

Krzyzewski did make a big mistake a few years ago, though not a violation. He called in sports reporters for the Duke daily newspaper and ripped them for not supporting the team, in front of the team. Not good, not understanding the role of the press.

Apr-03-10  crawfb5: Cousin Mike (the boss is part Polish, so to her Coach K qualifies as "extended family") has always had strong feelings about loyalty...
Apr-03-10  Jim Bartle: I've always liked Duke and the way they play, going back to the 70s, when they had a guy named Jim Sparnakel. I thought he was surefire NBA star, but it didn't happen.

The Hill-Laettner teams were great to watch as well, plus the later ones with Elton Brand and Shane Battier.

WannaBe: Butler did it, with a pistol, in the kitchen. End of story!
Apr-03-10  crawfb5: I grew up in ACC country, so got to see lots of great games over the years, even back before cable <gasp> I'd get a game or two during the week and several on the weekend.

I was in Philadelphia for a year and was flying down to North Carolina that summer. While sitting in my seat waiting for the last passengers to load, I notice this really tall guy walking down the aisle. He looked familiar, and it took me a few moments to realize it was James Worthy, going home to visit family. He sits across the aisle from me. When I get back to Philly, the guys at work all know where Worthy is playing in the NBA, but ask, "where did he play college ball?" I'd often seen him play in college, but couldn't remember where he was in the pros, so it's all a matter of perspective...

Apr-04-10  Travis Bickle: Dr. Benoni here's a unique visual treat! Being at Wrigley Field, drinking a cold 1, watching the TV and hearing Ron Santo sing all at once!

Apr-04-10  Jim Bartle: It's all downhill from here.

Granderson homers in first AB as a Yankee.

Apr-04-10  Jim Bartle: And now a leaping catch against the wall. He's going to have to learn to pace himself.
