Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Apr-05-10  Jim Bartle: Welcome to the big leagues! Washington brings in Jesse English to make his major league debut in the fourth.

Bases loaded, Ryan Howard at bat. Got him on a ground out, though.

During this inning as the Phils batted around the announcers talked about the game in general with Bud Selig for at least four batters without even commenting on the game. As three runs scored.

WannaBe: The Dodgers are getting beat by the Pittsburgh Nine, I'm sure <RonB52734> is happy right now.

Wonder if he played hooky, and is watching the game in person?!

Apr-05-10  Jim Bartle: Duke wins!! Duke wins!!

That's Zach Duke of the Pirates, winning pitcher vs. the Dodgers.

Apr-05-10  dakgootje: This is a good start, a good start it is indeed! The dodgers, being SF's biggest concurrents for the NL-west title, start off with a loss and Buerle notched the first ChiSox win of the season with a great outing!

If only Butler could upset Duke now... great day in sports ;)

Apr-05-10  Jim Bartle: Just read one of the most absurd quotes ever, from Milton Bradley a couple of weeks ago:

"Two years ago, I played, and I was good. I go to Chicago, not good. I've been good my whole career. So, obviously, it was something with Chicago, not me."

Phony Benoni: Darn. Well, they had their chance.
Apr-06-10  Jim Bartle: Funny, the supposed veteran, composed Duke team absolutely choked two shots in the final minute that would have won it earlier.

First a wide-open 12-footer which was almost an airball, and then an almost uncontested layup which the guy left short on the rim.

That's what happens when you start thinking too much, and just playing too little.

Apr-06-10  dakgootje: <Butler should have won that game, by 3...>

How so? Did not watch the game, but in retrospect I see Butler's biggest lead was a whopping 1 and they were generally around 4 points behind; bad ref's? :P

In other news; brilliant start of the season for lincecum!

Phony Benoni: Not a bad start by the Tigers yesterday. Verlander was a bit off, but the relief pitching was solid and they put a sustained rally together with contribution from the new guys.

There are rumors, by the way, that Johnny Damon is causing some friction in the locker room. This may be a smug, superior attitude (he does look the part), or he could be stirring them up like Kirk Gibson did to the Dodgers in 1988. And this team could probably use a bit of that; they seemed lifeless at times last year.

Truly a burly fellow.

Apr-06-10  Deus Ex Alekhina: Saw the videotape of Pres Obama throwing out the first pitch at the Nats game. Apparently he is a student of the eephus pitch. By the way, anyone who could write a poem about the Blackmar Diemer Gambit could probably write something about the eephus pitch or some other baseball arcana.

Why should such talents be wasted on baseball, though?

Apr-06-10  Jim Bartle: Give me a break, PB. Which video game did that Buehrle play come from?

Phony Benoni: <JB> I've gotten jaded with great catches. You can admire the athleticism, but they basically fall into a few types without great variation.

But I have never seen anything like that Buehrle play. Gloved-hand flips, even when lying prone, are normal stuff these days. But backwards between your legs while flying through the air? Even Roger Federer couldn't top that.

And give Konerko at first base a bit of credit too, for being ready and having enough presence of mind to grab the throw with his bare hand.

Apr-06-10  technical draw: I just saw that Buehrle play. Truly an amazing feat. Belongs in a group with a Pete Rose and Derek Jeter play along the same line.
Apr-06-10  A.G. Argent: I will state for the record that the last time I was so very impressed with a flip of the glove to get an out was a play I saw on a Monday Night game back in the 70's when Freddy Patek and Cookie Rojas turned a completely unbelievable DP. Beuhrle's flip is in that immortal class. Wonderful. Life is shown it's balance through baseball yet again.
Apr-06-10  Jim Bartle: On Yankee broadcast:

Ken Singleton, on Mike Cameron wanting to steal bases: "When you're older, you still want to fill columns on the stat sheet."

Al Leiter: "I liked the music of Fill Columns."

Phony Benoni: It's inevitable. We're going to get a show called <The Leiter Side of Baseball>.
Apr-07-10  Jim Bartle: I was reading a baseball story in the New Yorker (not written by Roger Angell--I thought that was illegal), and it said there were Pujols-for-Howard rumors floating around in spring training.

I find that hard to believe. How stupid would the Cards have to be to make that trade?

Apr-07-10  dakgootje: Great start of the season for the Giants sweeping the Astros!
Apr-08-10  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony and all you sports fans have you seen the outrageous police photo of Tiger Woods and his wife after his car crash? I got this from a buddy on the force. See below.

Apr-08-10  playground player: <Phony Benoni> The greatest catch I ever saw was in a playground softball game I played in as a teenager. Our left field foul line was also the goal line on the high school football field, with one of those old-fashioned H-shaped goalposts. Batter hit a long fly ball right down the line. The left fielder, running flat-out with his back to the infield, realized that he was about to kill himself by running into the goalpost. Without breaking stride, he reached around the post with his bare hand--I wish I had video of this!--and caught the ball. I will never understand how he did that!
