 | | Phony Benoni: Travis, I think Tiger is happy she wasn't holding a mashie-niblick. By the way, I think he would have been better off playing in a tournament before the Masters. Not so much for the golf practice, but he had to realize that his return would lead to a media circus and inevitably detract from his concentration on golf. Better to get that out of the way at a relatively unimportant event. |

 | | WannaBe: <Phony Benoni: As long as they keep winning, he should...> That is a great story, did not know about it!!! |
Apr-09-10 | | Jim Bartle: Woods knew that crowds at the Masters are different than those at other tournaments, more respectful. He had to figure he wouldn't hear much negative there. |
Apr-09-10
 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle: Woods knew that ...> Them nice and gentle southern folks. =) |
Apr-09-10 | | Jim Bartle: Hmmmm. The Masters is really, really careful about protecting its high-class image, to the extent that TV announcers cannot mention the size of the purse, and have to refer to spectators as "patrons." I think fans are well aware that there is plenty of security, and anybody heckling Tiger will be quickly escorted to the gates. |
Apr-09-10 | | Jim Bartle: An umpire has started a little controversy by ripping into the Red Sox and Yankees for overly slow play. I noticed umpires trying to speed up the games during their opening series. In particular, the home umpire refused to grant time to the batter when he held up his hand. A Red Sox batter tried it, then had to stay in and try to hit. Then Jeter tried to call time, the ump didn't give it to him, and Jeter stepped out anyway. The pitcher didn't throw. I guess Jeter was challenging the ump. Later David Ortiz did the same thing when not given time. The ump also tried to get Posada back behind the plate quickly when he went out of the mound, which happened often. I wonder if this is an overall baseball policy, or just something with that umpiring crew. |
Apr-09-10
 | | WannaBe: It's an over-all policy to try to speed up the pace, and cut down on total game time. Reports have said that Boston and New York are the two biggest offender, especially when they play each other. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/...
Boston reliever Pappelbon (sp?) was fined last year for slow play. The rule states, after 1st visit by manager/pitching coach, pitcher must be pulled, but there are no limit for players only meeting on the mound. The other side of the argument, which I favor, baseball requires more strategy, how to pitch to a batter, where to put your shifted fielders, or do you play straight-away. Especially when two really good teams meet up, it's like two chess masters, they take their time. And let them!! What is your rush? Need to be home by 11 PM's curfew?? |
Apr-09-10 | | Jim Bartle: I prefer to see a game move along. But what bothers me are not conferences and timeouts, but pitchers who don't throw strikes, or at least pitches close to the strike zone. |
Apr-09-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Perhaps there should be an overall limit to the number of timeouts, as in other sports. But it's not a new problem. I can remember reading articles back in the early 1960s complaining that games were starting to approach 3 hours in length. |
Apr-09-10 | | Jim Bartle: We're skipping an obvious reason. With every game televised now, there's a minute more every time the teams switch. I remember going to a Giants game in 2002, and it seemed like more than a minute went by every inning before Bonds even came out of the dugout. |
Apr-10-10 | | dakgootje: Jints the only unbeaten team at this point - who would have thought! |
Apr-10-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Well, the Gians being undefeated is not that big a surprise; anybody can win four in a row at any time. But to be the only undefeated team this early seems unusual. Maybe we're in for one of those parity years where most races go down to the finish. <JB> Oh, yes, commercials. Thank goodness for them. When I was younger, 60 seconds was adequate for a bathroom break. Now I appreciate the extra time. Two other factors: more ptiching changes, and increased posturing. Why does every player seem to think they have to refocus on every pitch as though the fate of the world hung on it? I blame Al Hrabosky and Mike Hargrove. |
Apr-10-10 | | thegoodanarchist: I was at the Nationals game Thursday and they managed to blow a 3-run lead, but went on to win 6-5, losing the series to the Phillies but avoiding the sweep. Same ol' Nats! Nothing unusual about .333 ball & bad pitching in DC :) |
Apr-10-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Good to know there's something we can depend on in Washington. But there's no need despair just yet. A lot of teams are going to play .333 against the Phillies. |
Apr-10-10 | | Jim Bartle: The Giants swept a no-name Astros team, then eeked out a win over Atlanta last night with a bunch of well-placed squibbers. Nothing to get excited about, though better than 2-2. |
Apr-10-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Tigers now 4-1, albeit against Kansas City and Cleveland. Hitting has been timely if not abundant, pitching generally excellent throughout. They're not blowing teams out, but they're winning. |
Apr-10-10 | | Jim Bartle: I watched a little yesterday. The Tigers took advantage of some really poor fielding by Cleveland, including the pitcher throwing a pickoff attempt into centerfield. |
Apr-10-10 | | Jim Bartle: Headline at Sports Illustrated: "Sabathia flirts with no-hitter as Yanks crush Rays" Maybe pitchers would have more luck if they "hit on" no-hitters" or "went for it" with no-hitters. They could chat up, seduce, try to pick up, or make eyes at a no-hitter. |
Apr-11-10
 | | WannaBe: Maybe they should buy 'no-hitters' a couple of drinks, that'll surely get it done. |
Apr-11-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Nah, wouldn't work. Men can't keep quiet about a thing like that, and no-hitters vanish the moment you mention them. |
Apr-11-10 | | thegoodanarchist: In any event, I predict the Nats win at least 68 games this year. No more 100+ loss seasons!!!! At least not until next decade :) |
Apr-11-10
 | | Phony Benoni: So the Giants finally go down, and the best record now belongs to ... the Twins at 5-1, <having played all six games on the road>. Who needs the Metrodome? |
Apr-11-10 | | dakgootje: <So the Giants finally go down> Alas yes.. Despite their nice record, they have not been playing overly convincing yet. I had hoped their hitting would have been much improved compared to previous year.. Ah well, the season is still young and Lincecum is up for tonight! O/u set at 7 and seeing how low-scoring a lot of games have been so far, fair chance it might even dive under with a Giants victory of, say, 4-1. <In any event, I predict the Nats win at least 68 games this year.> That would be a major improvement but they seem to have improved compared to previous year. My 10ct is on 65 or 66 <Hitting has been timely if not abundant> I only saw the 5-2 game against the indians but that was terrible to say the least! Could not hit a ball in the first 4 innings and only scored 4 runs in the 5th due to a couple of walks and a 3-run(!) error! Maybe that happens to have been a bad sample game though. |
Apr-11-10
 | | Phony Benoni: No, that was a pretty typical game. Effective pitching and taking advantage of opportunies. Thing is, they are creating more opportunties this year. Austin Jackson, the rookie they got for Curtis Granderson, has been impressive. Things just seem to happen when he's on the field, like scoring from first base on a throwing error by the third baseman. We haven't had a good drink-stirrer around here for some time. |
Apr-11-10 | | dakgootje: What a game... Two aces [Verlander & Santana) giving up grand slams in the first inning. Bloodbath lol I like that about other sports like basketball, if your team has the lead with 25 points going into the last quarter you can be pretty sure they will win -- with baseball there is always a chance they completely mess up either way. |
