Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Apr-11-10  Jim Bartle: Today is Atlanta's last game in SF this year. So fans have to give a big ovation to Bobby Cox.

And unfortunately it's Heyward's last chance this year to knock one into the bay. I want the Giants to win, but I want to see a Heyward splash, too.

Phony Benoni: Tigers win 9-8. Three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth, with the last two runs scoring on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch.

Yeah, Cleveland gave it to them. I don't know how well they'll fare against good teams, but people are going to start getting excited around here.

Miguel Cabrera was on base six times today, and is now hitting .522.

Apr-11-10  Jim Bartle: A win is a win.
Apr-11-10  dakgootje: And the craziness gets even better. After those grand slam first innings <and> the miraculous Tigers-comeback, now the Arizona D-backs just scored 13 runs. In 1 inning.

WannaBe: Talk about wacky/crazy, Dodgers had 11 hits, 1 error, Marlins had 5 hits, 2 errors.

Dodgers lost the game, go figure...

Apr-11-10  Jim Bartle: I found this is a Sports Illustrated article from 1999. You can choose to believe it or not:

In 1994 Manny Ramirez was watching the OJ Bronco chase on TV with some of his teammates. After a while he asked, "What did Chad do wrong?"

He thought they were talking about his teammate Chad Ogea.

I feel good for Edwin Jackson. Last year with the Tigers, it seemed he couldn't get 13 runs of support in a month.

Maybe they should have let him hit and DH'ed for somebody else.

Apr-11-10  Jim Bartle: Watching Cards-Brewers, and suddenly I think I've been shot back to 1958. Freese at 3B for the Cards?
Apr-11-10  Jim Bartle: Trevor Hoffman knows how to vulture!

Milwaukee 7, Cards 4, 2 out, top of ninth, one on, Hoffman pitching.

Pujols home run.

Holliday home run (1-2 count).

Bottom ninth:

McGhee home run.

Apr-12-10  Jim Bartle: Oh no!! Former Giants outfielder Marvin Benard admitted he took steroids after a knee surgery.

Now we're going to have to wipe all his records off the books.

Apr-12-10  dakgootje: <OD> 10 bucks there will be made a biographical film about her within 10 years! Directed by that guy from limp bizkit..
Apr-12-10  A.G. Argent: Hope all goes perfectly well tomorrow, Czar.
Apr-13-10  Jim Bartle: Everybody's buzzing about the possibility, but I really don't think the Astros can pull it off. They're bound to win one at some point.

No huge surprises, but still interesting.

Phony Benoni: Well, kind of. The surgery went well, but apparently a common result of removing a cataract is turning nearsightedness into farsightedness. So I'm seeing distances well enough, but had to pick up a pair of reading glasses to be able to read or use the computer.

So now I look like one of those little-old-people with glasses halfway down their nose. But if it works I ain't complaining, you young whippersnappers.

Apr-14-10  hms123: <Phony Benoni> I had cataract surgery a few years ago and it is the best thing ever. I can now play tennis, drive, hike, etc. without my glasses. I scatter readers around the house (and near my computer) so that they are always available.

I find I do need glasses for reading (obviously) and eating (I hate eating food that is out of focus).

The best part from my perspective is that I now have some really cool sunglasses (non-prescription) of the sort I could never wear before.

I am a little far-sighted, but it is way better than how extremely near-sighted I was for most of my life.

Apr-14-10  A.G. Argent: Well, ex-whippersnapper, you ain't alone around here. I been wearing reading glasses for nigh on to 20 years now. Prefer them to bi-focals. Besides, now you can revel in the fact that you look the part of the stereotypical librarian. Anyway, glad it went well.

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> It's possible. One of the eyedrops I'm using is a steroid.
Apr-15-10  playground player: <Phony Benoni> My wife's surgeon asked her if she wanted to remain nearsighted, before he did the surgery. Everything worked out just fine--but oh, those eye drops! Exceedingly expensive, not to mention the complicated schedule for taking them. But that's all over and done with, so now she can think about getting the other eye repaired.

You'll see--everything will turn out fine for you.

Apr-15-10  suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> So glad to hear your surgery went well! And nice to see you back posting regularly :)
