Congratulations! And I have reading glasses <and> regular glasses, so I have become a crotchety old man while still middle-aged. |
Apr-16-10 | | Jack Kerouac: Mr. Moody.
One of my all time favorite groups is The Moody Blues.
Michigan chess player; have a winning record in all 5 tournaments I've played in: 1977 Class Championship is one (in Southfield, (as unrated).
Have seen your name in Michigan Chess mags. Was a regular at the EMU chess club, circa '74-75.
Kerouac scholar, natch... |
Apr-16-10 | | Travis Bickle: Hey <Jack Kerouac> how have you been... This is Travis... I think you played chess at the tourn... at a very high level and then you just dropped out... sort of like Bobby did... I don't blame you Jack... the world is full of scum and dirtbags... and someday a big rain will come and wash them all down the sewer!!
Your pal, Travis |
Apr-16-10 | | Travis Bickle: <Jack Kerouac> Here's a song Jack that I thnk you will like... I drive in my taxi for hours and just keep rewinding and listening... to this song by The Moody Blues... I hope you like it pal...

"Because of the worldwide economic downturn, the league warned teams in a memo last July to expect the salary cap for the 2010-11 season to be between $50.4 and $53.6 million. The cap for the 2009-10 season was $57.7 million. The NBA players union responded by threatening to file a collusion lawsuit if the league did not have a good-faith basis to predict such a <precipitous> drop. A source close to several players said Friday's estimate of a $56.1 million cap "will compel" the union to take a harder look at a collusion case, exploring whether any players suffered <financial harm> last summer from the <low cap projection>, which was based on an expected 2.5 to 5 percent decline in gate receipts." Awww, those poor NBA-players; let's have a telethon to raise money for them.. |
Apr-16-10 | | Travis Bickle: Dr. Benoni sorry I havent checked up on your eye surgery but from what I read you can see almost as good as this guy.

<Awww, those poor NBA-players; let's have a telethon to raise money for them..> Professional basketball players are not the most sympathetic labor force in America, I agree. But this is a struggle between relatively rich basketball players and jaw-droppingly rich owners. And the players have just a few years to make the big bucks; the owners are rich for their entire lives (most were rich from birth). Also, if the owners got together and conspired to low-ball the salary cap, that's illegal. |
Apr-16-10 | | Jim Bartle: I agree with kp there.
Anybody watching baseball the past couple of days. I'm impressed with this #42 guy. The amounts involved are less, but I think a real scandal is college basketball raking in hundreds of thousands to put a certain brand of shoes on their players. |
Apr-17-10
 | | keypusher: Big-time college sports take my breath away -- a hugely profitable business where "wages" are capped at the cost of a college scholarship. Even a robber baron would be ashamed. |
Apr-17-10 | | Jim Bartle: Another thing: If a coach wants to move to another college he can, with no penalty. But if a player (who often chose his college largely because of the coach) wants to transfer, he loses a year of eligibility. |
Apr-17-10 | | Jim Bartle: On the Yankees broadcast today they said this was the 59th anniversary of Bob Sheppard's first game as PA announcer, NY vs. Boston 1951. I can't find the box score, but the Yankees started Jensen, Rizzuto, Mantle, DiMaggio, Berra and Mize. Sox had DiMaggio, Williams, Boudreau, Doerr and Goodman. Yankees won 5-0. |
Apr-17-10
 | | Phony Benoni: No luck with the box score either, but did find out it was Mantle's first game as well. |
Apr-17-10 | | Jim Bartle: Has retrosheet taken away free access to the box scores? |
Apr-17-10
 | | Phony Benoni: No, they just don't have 1951 ready yet. |
Apr-17-10
 | | Phony Benoni: If you can, check out the Cardinals-Mets game. It's 1-1 in the <20th> inning, after both teams scored a run in the 19th. Eighteen pitchers used so far. |
Apr-17-10 | | Jim Bartle: Whoa. Unfortunately at a press supervising a printing. Far from my DirecTV. |
Apr-17-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Mets won it 2-1 in the 20th, after employing the 19th pitcher of the game. Cardinals wound up using two non-pitchers in the last three innings. Starters probably going deep tomorrow. |
Apr-17-10 | | Jim Bartle: And the Mets had three 0-7's near the top of their order. Jimenez threw a no-hitter for Colorado vs. Atlanta. |
Apr-18-10 | | NakoSonorense: Can anyone explain me something: Why do batters have to run to first base when they hit a pop out and it is obvious that it is going to be a foul ball? If the ball is not caught, he will have to bat again; if it is, he will be out. I see no point in running. Is there something I am not aware of? |
Apr-18-10 | | technical draw: <Nako> The reason is probably because the batter can't actually gauge where the ball is going to land (or be caught). Rather than waiting around at home plate the batter runs to first just in case the ball drifts fair and the player drops it. Once the ball leaves the bat the batter automatically runs to first. |
Apr-18-10 | | A.G. Argent: Well, Mets/Cards was a great pitching duel, especially for the starters with Jaime Garcia in an excellent showing in 1-hitting the Mets through 7 and Santana 4-hitting the Cards also through 7 and both bullpens obviously doing what they had to do but 18 scoreless innings?! Get outta here. Just one of those maddening games for an offense. Cards had so many chances with the most vexing situation being in the bottom of the 14th with guys on 2nd and 3rd, heart of the line-up, no outs and nobody gets in.
I watched your Jints yesterday, Jim. Actually, believe it or not, it's the first time I ever sat and watched an entire game of Lincecum's. Filthy stuff. Great fun. Of course it helps to also knock in 3. The kid does amaze. They call him the Freak? Ya gotta think a third Cy Young in a row is so very possible. |
Apr-18-10 | | Jim Bartle: Of course we all remember that Deion Sanders didn't even run out pop ups which were fair! Lincecum is a real anomaly. He really looks like such a geek, not an athlete at all. He looks like a guy you'd see skateboarding down the railing of a stairway. I think before he was drafted his father told teams Tim would not sign with any team that didn't agree not to fool with his pitching motion. |
Apr-18-10 | | Jim Bartle: Giants history quiz!
What two Giants players were platooned, although both hit lefthanded? A very effective platoon, as well. |
Apr-18-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <JB>, my memory isn't slipping that much! Phony Benoni chessforum The question, of course, is what the basis for platooning was. Did they just alternate? Did one do better against left-handers, or certain pitchers? |
Apr-18-10 | | Jim Bartle: I'm repeating my questions??? Aaaaargh!! |
