 | | Phony Benoni: This play has been making the rounds of late:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtUl...
I like the one comment about this never happening before. |
Apr-23-10 | | Jim Bartle: A "Tilt-a-Whirl"!
The announcer also said a batter had been hit twice in one inning. |
Apr-23-10 | | Travis Bickle: Thanks Jim for finding that Brickhouse call. I havent heard it since that game was played! |
Apr-23-10
 | | Phony Benoni: The Super Hero Battery: John <Bateman> and <Robin> Roberts! http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1965... |
Apr-23-10 | | Jim Bartle: Holy Astroturf, Bateman! |
Apr-23-10 | | Jim Bartle: OK, before all you experts jump all over me, that should be: Holy Disappearing Fly Balls, Bateman! |
Apr-23-10 | | Jim Bartle: If you can check out the home run for the Mets' Ike Davis tonight, his first in the majors. Citi Field is supposed to really tough home run park, really big, but this ball is way up on the second level. |
Apr-24-10
 | | Phony Benoni: You can find the home run among the highlights given here: http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/video/p... But the link takes you to the play of the game. Sometimes a runner can score from second base on a sacrifice fly. But an infield fly? By the way, in case you're wondering runners can advance on an infield fly. You'll notice they didn't tag up before the initial advance. If the ball is caught, they must tag up; if it is not, they don't need to. Alert play by the Mets, and total brainlock by the Braves. |
Apr-24-10 | | Jim Bartle: That infield fly play was amazing. It was really windy, and that was the second pop fly Chipper Jones didn't catch. But this one he kicked away. And then, confused by the rule, they unnecessarily threw to first where Reyes was standing, forgot to call time, and the runner who had taken third on the error ran home. In the Yankees game, there was a brutal and unnecessary collision at home plate, as Texeira ran over the catcher (after having been beaned earlier), even though the catcher was not blocking the plate. The Yankees announcers talked a lot about it, but never noticed that the catcher was also hit in the face by the ball, after a horrendously bad bounce. |
Apr-24-10 | | Jim Bartle: Cycle watch!!
Mauer has a single, double, and triple vs. KC, and will bat at least once more. |
Apr-24-10 | | Jim Bartle: What a choker. Two more ABs, two lousy singles. |
Apr-24-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Lions' #1 pick, Ndamukong Suh:
http://www.comcast.net/slideshow/sp... I like him if, for nor other reason, he looks like a slightly larger version of Willie Mays. |
Apr-25-10 | | Jim Bartle: The Lions also got a really good back, Jahvid Best from Cal. Not another Sanders, but who is? |
Apr-25-10 | | Jim Bartle: OK, PB, here's something I'll bet you've never seen. In the NY-Angels game today, Kendry Morales was batting with one out and men on first and second. The catcher stood up and called for an intentional walk. After one pitch Girardi called time and called off the IW. (An IW with men on first and second?) Ever seen an intentional pass started and then stopped? After some confusion, the count went to 3 and 0, then Morales hit a three-run homer. |
Apr-25-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Evidently, whoever called for the intentional walk was right. I do recall Dick Williams faking an intentional walk against Johnny Bench in the 8th inning of this game: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... Just wish I could find a video. The expression on Bench's face was priceless. |
Apr-25-10 | | Jim Bartle: What do you mean, "whoever called for the intentional walk was right"? They called it off after one pitch. |
Apr-25-10
 | | Phony Benoni: I was thinking of whoever signalled the catcher to start the intentional walk. Oh, well, here's the highlight: http://losangeles.angels.mlb.com/vi... There's a more complete version on the page, but I can't seem to link to it. Much better than <"Kendry Morales, the Cuban Missile with a three-run Jimmy-Jack!!">, whatever that means. |
Apr-26-10 | | achieve: Hehe - brilliant gamecollection this! - Game Collection: DIRP! Very nice intro, and you indeed tricked me into reading your profile; great stuff! - I *did* laugh out loud ;) |
Apr-26-10 | | A.G. Argent: Czar, who was it that when being given an intentional walk, reached across the plate and slapped the ball into right field for a basehit? DiMaggio? Williams? Somebody, right? |
Apr-26-10 | | Jim Bartle: I saw Pete Rose do that once against the Giants. He was in a slump to start the season, and asked the Giants catcher, "You're walking a .230 hitter?" He slapped the next pitch into right.
Also the other day I saw a pitcher basically throw a strike during an IW. But the batter wasn't ready. |
Apr-26-10
 | | Phony Benoni: I've heard of various players, ususally notorious bad-ball hitters, get a hit during an intentional walk when the pitch got too close to the plate. And Todd Helton seems to have gotten a hit when the fake intentional walk was tried on him. However, it's possible this game provides the ultimate indignity, during the Rangers' seventh inning: http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1991... The record shows Pettis being caught stealing home. According to a couple of accounts, he was actually picked off third base during an intentional walk. |
Apr-26-10 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> I remember watching that game on TV! Poor Johnny Bench says, "Why me...?" |
Apr-26-10
 | | Open Defence: <Phony Benoni: Anyone who plays on <FICGS>: are you having trouble accessing the site?> I play there and I cannot access the site, a few at the Rybka forum also mentioned that they had problems... guess we can only wait... |
Apr-26-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <Open Defence> Thanks. Good to know I'm not alone. |
Apr-26-10
 | | keypusher: <A.G. Argent: Czar, who was it that when being given an intentional walk, reached across the plate and slapped the ball into right field for a basehit? DiMaggio? Williams? Somebody, right?> Lajoie did it several times supposedly. 110 years ago they didn't throw the ball quite as far out of the strike zone as they do now. Recently there was a bru-ha-ha about A-Rod running across the pitcher's mound. What say you, veteran fans? Was that a no-no? |
