 | | Phony Benoni: The Tigers just went into Minnesota 1/2 game out of first and on a five-game winning streak. They got swept.
No doubt about it. The Twins are going to be helpless at home this year without the Metrodome. |
May-05-10 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony & Deus Ex Alekhina, what do you think of The Black Hawks playing The Redwings in The Playoffs? Also Phony & JB What are the chances of Cubs Soriano hitting a homer in 5 straight games? |
May-05-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Well, with the Wings down 3-0, I don't think much of them playing the Black Hawks at all. |
May-05-10
 | | Phony Benoni: And, since I assume from your question that Soriano has already homered in four straight games, I'd say the chance of him making it 5 straight are about the same as hitting a homer in any particular game. At least, that's how I understand probability. |
May-06-10 | | Travis Bickle: Dr Benoni sorry about your Wings.
Dr. Phony I thought you were The Gran Poohbah of baseball? I thought you covered the sport like AP! Soriano did have 4 straight games of hitting a homerun but fizzled tonight against a horse bleep Pirates team. If he had hit a fifth consectutive homer in as many days Alfonso would have tied Hack Wilson, Ryne Sanberg & Sammy(steroids)Sosa for that distinction in a Cubs uniform. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis> With everything going on around here, I don't have time to keep up with all the big happenings in baseball. Now, if you had asked something about 1923... |
May-06-10 | | Travis Bickle: Aha! The computer mind of a high level librarian! ; P |
May-06-10 | | Jim Bartle: Detroit up 4-0 over the Sharks halfway through the first period? And all the goals by the same guy (Franzen)? Has to be an error. |
May-06-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Nope. They looked at the films, saw that "The Mule" was the only guy playing well for Detroit, so he's taking on the Sharks by himself. Actually, Franzen is a good player all year long who can become inspired in the playoffs. And now a different player has made it 5-0 Wings after one period. |

 | | Phony Benoni: As great as Ernie Harwell was, he had one classic slip-up in this game: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... (This may seem too good to be true, but Ernie later included the audio clip in a collection called <Ernie Harwell's Audio Scrapbook>.) It occurred during the steal of home in the Angels 8th. As you can tell, there was quite an argument. Tiger catcher Bill Freehan insisted he had tagged the runner, and was emphasizing his point by banging his glove on the plate. Ernie's call: <"And Freehan is beating his meat -- his mitt -- on home plate".> Fortunately, it was about 2:00 AM Detroit time, so not too many people caught it. |

May-07-10 | | LucB: Phony Benoni: great avatar!! My favourite Muppet! |
May-07-10 | | Jim Bartle: I read this in Sports Illustrated. Somebody asked a gas station owner what hours he was open. He said, "From 7:30 in the morning until five minutes to Ernie." I wonder how many really outstanding long-time local announcers there are that I don't know about. There are Vin Scully, Chick Hearn and Johnny Most, of course, and Jerry Remy is very popular in Boston, but I don't know much beyond that. In San Francisco we had Lon Simmons for many years doing 49ers and Giants, and Bill King doing Warriors (from their first game in 1962), Raiders and A's. King was brilliant but stuck to himself away from the games. Simmons was a local monument, seen and appreciated everywhere. |
May-07-10 | | Jim Bartle: Here's a nice interview with Most and Hearn from 1987. At 4:30 they play each of them calling the Magic Johnson hook shot to win game four, in totally different ways. Afterward, the two of them just laughed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtzg... |
May-07-10 | | Jim Bartle: You'll be seeing replays of the Mets' Ike Davis catching a foul pop against the Giants. Pretty amazing. Earlier, Giants' announcer: "There's strike two. Now Sanchez can go for the strikeout." |
May-08-10 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: <Travis> The Redwings aint dead yet, as of 3:50pm Saturday, but the Zamboni will probably start looking like a hearse soon. |

May-08-10 | | Jim Bartle: Davis catch in the dugout: http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/video/p... |
May-08-10 | | Jim Bartle: If the Giants are tied with the Mets coming up to bat in the bottom of the ninth with the score 4-4 tomorrow, and the catcher comes up to bat, I'm going to scream. |
May-08-10
 | | Phony Benoni: I can see it now. The Giants intentionally walk the catcher. The Mets put in the other catcher as a pinch hitter, and he also gets walked. The third batter comes up wearing a mask, chest protector and shin pads, and the Giants walk him just to be safe. The Mets activate their bull pen catcher, who hits a grand slam to win the game. The Giants begin to lobby for a DH in the National League who will be allowed to hit only for the catcher. |
May-08-10
 | | Phony Benoni: I saw the Davis catch. Some guys just can't wait to get off the field at the end of an inning. |
May-08-10 | | Jim Bartle: Nothing wrong with that, but do they have to make such a show of it? |
May-08-10
 | | Phony Benoni: It's amazing how one game can affect a career. The Kansas City Athletics used six pitchers in this game. Wheat and Van Brabant never pitched again in the major leagues, and Trice pitched just once more about ten days later. Burtschy and Spicer were both gone by the end of the next year. And all as a result of one game. It just doesn't seem fair. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... The jinx even affected the White Sox. They got shut out their next two games. |
May-08-10 | | Jim Bartle: In their first four years the Rockies might have rivalled those A's in going through pitchers. They used 25 in '93, 18 in '84, 20 in '95, and 21 in '96. |
May-08-10 | | Jim Bartle: Looking up the Rockies pitching (my cable got Denver stations those years, so I remember) I was drawn to Larry Walker's record. In 1997 he hit .366 with 49 homers and 130 RBIs. I bet those numbers would win the Triple Crown most years. |
May-08-10
 | | Phony Benoni: 2nd in batting average, 3rd in RBIs. Walker had some nice numbers and three batting titles, but the Colorado factor and frequent injuries mean no Hall of Fame consideration for him. (1997 was the only season he played more than 150 games, or got 200 hits). Thinking about it, though, would the thin air in Colorado necessarily help you win batting titles? Those are usually won by line drive hitters. |
