Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Nobody was gonna hit Gibson that day.

Gotta love those high tech graphics!

Jun-19-10  eightsquare: just asking again . one month ago you said you have too many games . Any slots free now ?
Jun-19-10  Jim Bartle: Great video, Travis.

I wonder what Allison said to Roseboro as he came up to bat: "This guy got good stuff?" "Tell me what's coming, give me a little chance." "Are you going to Disneyland?"

Amazing how much the announcer Jerry Doggett copies Vin Scully's style. Exactly alike. Also amazing that they'd send Scully to the clubhouse instead of having him broadcast the last inning.

The Twins took out Kaat after giving up two in the fourth. That's a really quick hook, but maybe he really faded, starting on two days rest.

And the "celebration" after they won. It wouldn't even qualify as a celebration today. No jumping around, just a lot of congratulations, and they run into the dugout. Different times.

Jun-19-10  A.G. Argent: Travis, ohmigod, what fun it was watching that! Yeah, Jim, a different era. Ya gotta think that, as a general unwritten rule in respecting the other team and their fans had something to do with toned down celebrations back then. They coudn't get off the field fast enough, could they. And as for the US Open, I'm pullin' for the Big Easy at 1 under, 2 back but money's gotta be on Phil who's at the same score going into Saturday's round.
Jun-19-10  Jim Bartle: I like the tournament at Pebble Beach because the course isn't immaculate, with every blade of grass perfect and perfectly green. And it uses the natural terrain, isn't sculpted by bulldozers, and isn't made tough by excessive length. (Also because I've played it, so I know a little what it's about.)

The 10th hole finishes above the bright white Carmel Beach. People down there had written "Go Phil" in seaweed as Mickelson came to the hole.

Jun-19-10  Travis Bickle: Hey Jim I thought that was Vince Scully broadcasting lol as I didn't watch it all the way to the end. I couldn't believe how solemn everybody was when they won The World Series! I guess you're right it was different times.
Jun-19-10  A.G. Argent: I've played it too, many times...on-line. The Tiger Woods on-line game is tough. Best I've done at Pebble Beach is 1 over. But anyway, real golf, this Open, they've turned two of the par 5's into par 4's; #2 and the incredible #8, you know the one with the approach shot blind, up over the bluff towards the ocean. Phil birdied it yesterday going 5 iron, wedge to the green and dropped the putt. I wonder if they've made it a par 4 before in other Opens. Czar? Or have I really stepped out of line going on about golf. Jim started it!
Jun-19-10  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: Nobody was gonna hit Gibson that day.> Yeah he had wicked over powering stuff.
Jun-19-10  Travis Bickle: <A.G. Argent> Im glad you guys enjoyed the game clips.

The greens at Pebble Beach are just awful!

Hey A.G. I also play that Tiger Woods golf 2008, I made up my own players at first but after awhile I went with the pro players because they can hit the ball alot farther. ; P

Jun-19-10  Deus Ex Alekhina: You know what's scary? The thought that Travis is driving down Division Street with one hand while typing on his laptop with the other. Maybe he is good at multi-tasking, I dunno.
Jun-19-10  A.G. Argent: Travis, you ever hear of another on-line golf site called wgt.com; World Golf Tour. Man, it is an excellent site. As close to real as you will find anywhere. I play St. Andrews there all the time, among other courses.
Jun-19-10  Travis Bickle: A.G. No I never have. I played for awhile online with a buddy of mine but he lost interest. To me the toughest course is Sawgrass.
Jun-19-10  Travis Bickle: <Deus Ex Alekhina> I'm pretty good with the multi tasking but I still have a hard time dropping the mouse and picking up the .45 caliber. LOL!
Jun-19-10  Jim Bartle: AG: #2 has been shortened into a long par 4, from a short and very easy par 5. But #8 is always a par 4, and scary. Strangely enough, it's the hole I always played best, parring it all six times and never putting a ball in the ocean. Yet I could never par the old #5 (now replaced), not a hard hole at all.

I've never thought of playing golf online. I guess I'll try it. I wonder if any have the Olympic Club in San Francisco, the greatest course I've ever seen, and really, really tough.

Phony Benoni: Not to disrupt the golf thread (after all, I have played Putt-Putt a couple of times), but I would like to note the passing of Manute Bol:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...

The story is an eye-opener. I had no idea of the life he had lived after basketball.

Jun-19-10  Jim Bartle: Manute was a good guy, and worked to improve conditions in Sudan. As Charles Barkley says in the article, he may have looked weird and moved in a strange way, but he'd be happy to live in a world where everyone was like him.

chancho: I remember Manute shooting and hitting three pointers. What a sight that was.
Jun-19-10  A.G. Argent: Jim, yeah, I had that wrong. Shouldn't believe everything I read at Yahoo sports. It was #6 not #8 I thought they made a 4 for the Open but I was mistook. And did I say money should be on Phil? I meant Eldrick. Did you see his second shot on 18? Dude is back. And on-line golf is great fun. Too much fun. I'm addicted, actually.
Jun-20-10  Jim Bartle: I didn't watch much yesterday, but I did see Woods' second on 18. Unbelievable. Looks like he's stuck behind a tree, but plays a huge fade under the branches, and it slices back and bounces perfectly up onto the tiny green. Something like 260 yards. Almost nobody goes for the green in two on 18.

I see 9 is still giving plenty of trouble. That hole is murder. 6 through 10 has to be about the greatest stretch of holes in the world.

Jun-20-10  playground player: <Travis> Thank you for that Koufax video! As much as I detest the Dodgers, I recognize Sandy Koufax as the greatest pitcher during my lifetime--the single best in an era of great pitching. Of course, if it had been the 2010 World Series, we would see umpteen zillion pitchers in the game, played on a field named for a sponsor, with 4,500 Cialis ads on the TV broadcast, and an on-the-field celebration that went on for hours.

Where, O where is my time machine??

Jun-20-10  Jim Bartle: All Giants fans in the 60s absolutely despised the Dodgers, espeically Drysdale, Regan and Wills. But we all had a deep admiration for Koufax, and nobody felt too bad when he beat the Gs.
Jun-20-10  Jim Bartle: Tiger and Mickelson were both in great position to charge at the (inexperienced) leaders in the final round, and both shot +4 or +5--no chance. I would never have bet on both playing so poorly.

What a sight to see Woods halfway down the cliff to the beach on #10, hitting out of knee-deep weeds.

Jun-21-10  A.G. Argent: Jim, Ernie as well. Golf's A-list all right there. And then there was Dustin Johnson. Painful to watch. All Eldrick had to do was get off to a good start but he missed the very easy fairway on #1, bogied and never recovered. Mickleson? Who knows what he's doing half the time. At one point the TV mikes picked him up saying to his caddy after yet another errant shot; "..took a chance, didn't pay off." So all props to McDowell. He was steady when all others weren't, (except the unknown Frenchman), so he deserved it.
Jun-21-10  Jim Bartle: The greatest moment was still Woods' long bomb on 18 from behind the tree on Saturday. Unbelievable. I was really surprised to see guys missing the green on #16, an absolutely beautiful hole, downhill and not particularly tough. The par 3 17th was absolutely unfair; you cannot hit that green from the distance they'd placed the tees.

Phony Benoni: History in the making here in Detroit! The Tigers have just called up relief pitcher <Jay Sborz>. When he gets into a game, he will become the first player in MLB history whose last name begins with <Sb>.

If he's successful, he might get labelled as "The Antimony Man". If he's not, well, there are other things he might be called.
