Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Here's the Damon game. It must have been frustrating to get 3/4th of the cycle in the first inning, but not be able to finish it off.

<YouRang> It may have happened, though I can't think of a case offhand. Unless you want to count the guy who hits into a triple play.

Phony Benoni: Kidding aside, this was probably George Kell's worst game.

Jun-14-10  Jim Bartle: I wonder if that's the worst oh-fer ever.
Jun-14-10  YouRang: <It does raise a question: Has there ever been a batter who made ALL THREE outs in an inning?>

In an effort to answer my own question, I found a site that claimed pretty convincingly that it has never been done.

In fact, it turns out that there is only one player to ever have three plate appearances in an inning and fail to get at least one hit! He went 0-for-1 on 2 walks and a fielders choice.

His name? <Ted Williams> (Red Sox vs. A's - 4th of July, 1948) http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

The bad news is he went 0 for 4. The good news is that he only left two runners on base.

Too bad a guy has to reach first before you can pinch-run for him. They should have just tied Torre's bat to his shoulder that day.

Jun-15-10  playground player: <Phony Benoni> and everybody else--I've posted a Polish game on my forum: comments and criticisms welcome.

Jun-15-10  Jim Bartle: Cross-posting that from your forum, eh, Travis?
Jun-15-10  Travis Bickle: No Jim but now that you bring it up, I thought The Blackhawks singing the National Anthem sounded better than Pavarotti! ; P
Jun-15-10  Jim Bartle: Just commenting that I'd posted the same clip on your forum.
Jun-15-10  Travis Bickle: Argh, Jim I posted the wrong damn link. I wanted to share this with Dr Benoni, you and all you sportsfans!

Phony Benoni: Still trying to imagine Pavarotti during the 7th inning stretch at Wrigley Field:

"Take me out to the ball game!
Take me out to the food!
Buy me some scampi a zuppetta,
Mortadella and Ossobuco
Let me root for risi e bisi
For minnestrone is lame,
And there's One! Two! Three types of wine
At the old ball game."

Frightening.

Jun-16-10  A.G. Argent: Czar, did you write that yourself? Please tell me you wrote that yourself. But if you did not write that yourself, I will steal it. It's inspired.
Jun-16-10  A.G. Argent: And Travis, tell you the truth, I've always hade a hard time telling the diff between Pavarotti and Ozzy.

Jun-16-10  Jim Bartle: A drive into the alley in right-center in SF, Orioles announcer calls, "That's into triples alley!" Oops, not quite, the hitter was Bengie Molina.

Earlier the Giants hit two straight homers. Announcer Jim Palmer says that once he watched Grimsley give up three in a row, and told his teammate on the bench, "That will NEVER happen to me." Teammate: "How can you know that?" Palmer: "I'd walk the third guy."

Jun-16-10  Travis Bickle: Dr. Benoni I look to you as a wise sage to give me some words of wisdom. In my last 2 games on Playchess I found what Forest Gump said about life I found holds true in the 64 squares of ecstasy & agony. You see wise one, chess is also like a box of chocolates as you never know what you're going to get. Case in point my 1st contest I played an exchange Grunfeld with a winning game in the picture. My opponent had a Q & 2 R's to my Q & 2 R's, but I was up a B and 3 pawns! I could easily won in hindsight by exchanging Q's when I swiped his final B but no I got cute and took with my R. Long story short he wound up with 2 pigs and a Q on my 7th rank. I could have easily drawed but got flustered and resigned not wanting to wait for mate in 1. ; (

Game 2 I had the white pieces in a Sicilian where I blundered and was down a whole piece. Then I made some Fischeresque moves and missed mate but I captuerd the poor sods Q! 1-0

In summation, I played a great opening screwed up the middle game and got killed. the 2nd game I played badly and had a little (Tal) and a little luck working for me and won a lost game. I think my game has entered The Twilight Zone.

Phony Benoni: <Travis> I doubt I can give you any words of advice. That's exactly what happens in my games.
Jun-18-10  Jim Bartle: I realize golf is not big on "let's play two," though it's possible to play two rounds in a day, but how about this round by Y.E. Yang at Pebble Beach today in the US Open?

34-49.

13 over on the back nine.

Jun-19-10  Travis Bickle: Dr Benoni, here's a classic performance by Bob Gibson pitching against your Detroit Tigers in The World Series! I notice back then they had a little more class & let Harry Carey broadcast his home team The Cardinals along with Kurt Gowdy. Now "The Network" has to bring in their own personal commercial clones.

Jun-19-10  Travis Bickle: Jim Bartle here's Sandy Koufax pitching in the 1965 World Series!
