 | | Phony Benoni: I like interleague play, but it needs to be set up like it is in the NFL, where teams in each division play identical schedules as far as possible. You might make an exception for one true "natural rivalry" series (Yankees-Mets, Cubs-White Sox, etc.), but that's about it. However, they do need to get this designated hitter thing straightened out. As for the All-Star game deciding home field advantage in the World Series, I don't see that as any worse than the previous system in which it alternated every year. But most other sports give it out strictly based on regular season record, and I don't see why baseball should be any different. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Tigers win and go into first place, but lose valuable relief pitcher Joel Zumaya: http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/news/... Long-time Tigers fans can't help but think of Mark Fidrych--great rookie year, injury-plague career afterwards. |
Jun-29-10 | | A.G. Argent: Oh my god, David, that's terrible. Truly terrible. That was difficult to watch just because of the horrible pain he was in. Man, that's bad. Deeply hope he will be Ok but that just does not look good. |
Jun-29-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Official word: a non-displaced fracture of the olecranon, a bone at the tip of the right elbow. No ligament damage, but he's definitely out for the season. |
Jun-30-10 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> I wouldn't dream of giving you chess advice. But if you play 1.b4, that throws the Sicilian right out the window. OK, you have played on levels I will never reach... I prefer to play 1.e4, but I HATE playing against the Sicilian or the French. |
Jun-30-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> Yes, I know, but the Sicilian and French are part of the price we have to pay for playing the best first move. Seriously, though, it's very hard for me to describe my opening lines because I don't play opening lines. It's more important for me to reach a position I'm comfortable with than to follow the theoretical recommendation. But that's my own idiosyncrasy, and I don't like to recommend it to others who might think about the game differently. Well, I hope they do. |
Jun-30-10 | | just a kid: Go Twins! :) |
Jun-30-10 | | A.G. Argent: Now, <just a kid>, be nice. Keep in mind that this the forum of a hard-core Tiger fan who is probably still smarting from last night's hat-trick of triples by a Twin named Span. I'd like to ask said Tiger fan what the record is for 3-baggers in one game but I don't dare. Not yet anyway. But I will someday. |
Jun-30-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <A.G. Argent> Here is the triples records page at Baseball Almanac. A couple of players hit 4 in a game back in the 19th century; the modern-day record is 3. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/rec... By the way, I don't mind kidding from Twins fans. There are some rivalries based on hate, and some on respect. Tigers - Twins is one of the latter. You have to admire how the Twins can keep contending year after year without the financial resources of other teams. That is one fine organization. |
Jun-30-10 | | Jim Bartle: I see a guy named Dave Brain hit three triples twice in one season, and for two different teams. And he only hit 11 all season. I wonder if he's related to kibitzer <Dick Brain>? |
Jun-30-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Did you happen to read his bio? A surprisingly modern player: high power, low average, hands of stone. http://bioproj.sabr.org/bioproj.cfm... Later became a licensed chiropactor. Yes, he was Dr. Brain. Scary. |
Jun-30-10 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> No Jim Dick Brain always strikes out. |
Jun-30-10 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony whats the record for homers in 1 game? I remember 1 day when the wind was roaring out of Wrigley Field when a Mike Schmidt hit 4 round trippers. |
Jun-30-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis> The record is four, and it's been done many times in nine innings; Schmidt took 10 to do it. http://www.baseball-almanac.com/rec... |
Jun-30-10 | | A.G. Argent: <...one fine organization.> I concur wholeheartedly, Czar. A franchise financially holding on by their fingernails for so long. They were so close to being dismantled by Selig just a few years ago, what, 4 or 5? Less? Then somehow (??!) that situation is reversed and they get themselves a beautiful new park and lock up a couple of franchise players in Mauer and Morneau and retain pretty much one of the best managers in baseball in Ron Gardenhire. It's a great baseball story. Too bad they're in your division but now it seems it's time to notice another manager in the AL Central and you can't be surprised the ChiSox are back in it. Or can you? |
Jun-30-10 | | Jim Bartle: A lot of stability with managers, too--only two since 1986. One of the more surprising sights for me in baseball was when Tom Kelly stayed in the dugout and just watched when the Twins won the Series. |
Jun-30-10 | | Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni: <Travis> The record is four, and it's been done many times in nine innings; Schmidt took 10 to do it.> See Dr Benoni this is why you are The Gran Poohbah of baseball!! ; P |
Jun-30-10 | | just a kid: I can't believe the Twins got close to a payroll of 100 million! I'm not one for hating other sports teams. Except the Yankees and the Lakers :) |
Jul-01-10 | | A.G. Argent: Two managers in 24 years? Guess I never really acknowledged that. Yeah, you could call that stability. Like Alston and Lasorda. Although I shouldn't mention Lasorda's name, talk about personal sports hates. |
Jul-02-10 | | Jim Bartle: Why all the white hats in baseball tonight? |

Jul-03-10 | | A.G. Argent: Speaking of the Twinkies, here's the latest offering of the*you've-got- to-be-kidding-me call du jour* by an umpire as well as the best sales job by a baserunner:
http://tampabay.rays.mlb.com/video/... |
Jul-03-10 | | Jim Bartle: Oh, he tagged him.
I did see a clip once where Norm Cash fielded a ball and waited in front of first base for the runner. The runner stopped, Cash reached out and swiped at him, then threw the ball somewhere, and the runner ran on to first. Cash clearly missed him. |
Jul-03-10 | | A.G. Argent: "He missed the tag! He missed the tag! Good seats, huh, buddy?" |
Jul-03-10
 | | Phony Benoni: There used to be an unwritten rule of thumb that if the ball got there first the runner would be called out, regardless of whether he was actually tagged in time. You still see that happen a lot. And think of all those phantom force outs at second where the infielder is a foot or two away from the base when he catches the ball. I wonder if the umpires are getting so much heat this year that they're pressing and consciously trying to make absolutely perfect calls all the time. |
