 | | keypusher: <Jim> <PB> Bill James wrote a long article in 2000 saying that the modern use of closers made no sense strategically. I wondered if anything would change when he went to work for the Red Sox, but as far as I know it hasn't. I think it will change in the way you predict, Jim, but slowly. By the way, you two (and some of the other more serious baseball fans here) might like Posnanski, the SI blogger I linked to. He's wasted on me, you might say. |
Nov-30-10 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni>, <keypusher> Great stat! The team that's ahead in the 9th inning wins 90-95% of the time, whether it has a "closer" or not--going all the way back to 1911. With that in mind, it might be "verrrry interesting" (you gotta imagine Arte Johnson saying this, c. 1970) to look at the "Blown Save" stat. Saves should only be blown about 5% of the time, right? Warren Spahn didn't need no stinkin' bullpen! (Actually, I don't suppose anyone needs a really stinking bullpen...) |
Nov-30-10 | | Jim Bartle: I've complained about Posnanski here before. He takes forever to get to the point, he has all these boring digressions noted with asterisks, repeats his point in about twenty ways, and often makes the story about himself. |
Nov-30-10 | | Jim Bartle: I'm sure there was a lot more to it, but I think James argued that bringing in a closer when the game was tied or the team was ahead by one run would be a lot more effective than bringing him in only when ahead by one or two runs. I wonder if we'll ever read anything about his time with the Red Sox. Probably not. I'll bet he had something to do with the trade for David Ortiz and drafting Dustin Pedroia. |

 | | keypusher: <Jim Bartle: I've complained about Posnanski here before. He takes forever to get to the point, he has all these boring digressions noted with asterisks, repeats his point in about twenty ways, and often makes the story about himself.> You ruined him for me. :) After I read your comment, I went back and looked at some of his stuff, and all I could think of was, <oh, how he does go on!>. |
Nov-30-10 | | Jim Bartle: What most bothers me is how he'll often start a story with a long comment that's about himself, somehow related to the subject at hand, and finally, slowly gets starts discussing the point of the article. Bill James is great, and knows how to write to the interest of the typical fan. But he spawned an awful lot of weak imitators. |

Nov-30-10 | | hangingenprise: <phony> only lion fan can emphasize with bill fan!-and sympathize with
them also. |

Dec-01-10 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: <Nightranger> Maybe ur still checking in here, since u don't have ur own forum. I wonder if Eddie Verda is still "Homeless in Ann Arbor"? I have (somewhere) a list of all the active players for the Dearborn Heights chess club from 1974, which include Arsalan, Fereidon, Balkany , Kurt Steege (wheelchair), Henry Jonik, Hank Schwab, Bolda Sr & Jr, Steve Serdenkovski, etc, many of whom played in Livonia. |
Dec-01-10 | | crawfb5: Game Collection: Bradley Beach 1929 is more or less done, unless I think of any additional tweaking. I have been chasing down games from the two 1894 Showalter-Hodges matches. We have none in the database. I have already submitted the games from the first match, and need to straighten out a few things on the second match before sending them in. Those were the days. I've found game scores in multiple NY newspapers, sometimes three different papers published the same game. |
Dec-02-10 | | crawfb5: I went ahead and submitted what I had for the Showalter-Hodges rematch/extension. I can't make sense of the score for game 3 in the NY Times for 3 Jun 1894. Either the typesetter or I are having issues. I haven't found game 2 at all. There's practically no coverage in any of the NY papers from mid-May to early June. Maybe Helms was on vacation. |
Dec-02-10 | | crawfb5: Thanks. That makes sense on the Showalter-Hodges game. I now see where I misread a move (I read "Q-Q3" instead of "Q-Q2") that led me deep into the weeds with no visible way out. |
Dec-03-10 | | Jim Bartle: Too bad. Ron Santo has died, and not as a Hall of Famer. |

Dec-03-10 | | Travis Bickle: Dr Benoni, you being a Library Scientist I have a few questions for you. My sister bought me a book called 'Bobby Fischer: His Approach To Chess'. The author is Elie Agur and was printed by Cadogan Books from London House. It was published in 1992 with a foreword from Garry Kasparov, so it must have been written after Bobby's rematch with Spassky. Have you heard of this book and if you have what do you think of it? |
Dec-03-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis> I vaguely remember the Agur book, but have no strong impressions of it one way or the other. <ParisAttack>, who generally knows what he's talking about when it comes to books, gives it a thumbs up here: blacksburg chessforum. If you go to the Search Kibitzing page and search for "Agur Fischer", you'll find a few more reviews, all favorable. |
Dec-03-10 | | Travis Bickle: Thanks Dr! |

Dec-03-10 | | Nightranger: < Deus Ex Alekhina: <Nightranger> Maybe ur still checking in here, since u don't have ur own forum. > Actually, I am, and I do. < I wonder if Eddie Verda is still "Homeless in Ann Arbor"? > Eddie told me he played chess at the local McDonald's on Friday and Saturday nights, but I haven't seen him when I went in there. < I have (somewhere) a list of all the active players for the Dearborn Heights chess club from 1974, which include Arsalan, Fereidon, Balkany , Kurt Steege (wheelchair), Henry Jonik, Hank Schwab, Bolda Sr & Jr, Steve Serdenkovski, etc, many of whom played in Livonia. > Now I remember. It seemed like a lot of Livonia played at Dearborn Heights. I never actually went in there, which is odd, since it was a block or two from my Grandma's house. It was next to Crestwood High School, wasn't it? Some community center? By the ice rink? Heck, I remember when they built the ice rink. We used to play tennis in there for a while. |
Dec-03-10 | | Nightranger: < Deus Ex Alekhina > I've been pretty swamped at work. I have something like 8 months of catch-up and I'll probably have as many as 8 weeks to do it in. So it looks like I'll only be checking around every few days or so. |
Dec-04-10 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony or Deuce Alekhina, can either of you guys give me easy directions from Chicago to that roller rink stadium in Detroit? I have a couple tickets for the Bears Lions game. As always I will be wearing my bear head in the stands. It's not so easy getting the beers down but I'm a proud Bears fan! ; P http://miva01.nyi.net/graphics/0000... |
Dec-04-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis> Easy enough. Get on I-94, go east, and keep going till you see the parking lot full of Bears' tailgaters. Just don't keep the meter running. Or, if you're serious:
http://www.detroitlions.com/ford-fi... But it's basically I-94 East to some exit in the 210s and go south. |
Dec-04-10 | | Travis Bickle: Dr Benoni now you have real class! ; ) |
Dec-05-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Hey, the Lions covered the spread again! Moral Victory! |
Dec-05-10 | | Jim Bartle: Cincinnati, Detroit lose close games in the final minutes. It just seems the teams with better records don't make key mistakes, while the teams at the bottom do. |
Dec-05-10
 | | Phony Benoni: In the Lions' case, they got shut down offensively in the second half again. They scored one field goal, after recovering a fumble inside the Bears' 10 yard line. |
Dec-05-10 | | Travis Bickle: Dr Benoni The Bears beat a good Lion Football team! Detroit will be the real thing next season!! |
