Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jan-07-11  Jim Bartle: First time I saw Newton was on an "I Love Lucy" re-run, a show from maybe 1960. Took me about twenty minutes to figure out he was a boy and not a girl.

What's so odd is that he's such a huge star in Las Vegas but never (I've never seen him) appears on TV or makes popular records. I can't think of anyone remotely like him.

Phony Benoni: Sounds like he's handling his career intelligently. A great stage show is interactive, with performer and audience feeding off each other. This doesn't always transfer well to the impersonal screen or recording studio. Apparently Newton is OK with his limits, and is content to stick with a good thing.
Jan-07-11  Travis Bickle: I seen Wayne Newton with a guest appearance on Bonanza way back in the 60's where he sang The Old Rugged Cross. I think Wayne had many records in his early career and I remember them being sold on tv offers. My uncle & my dad both had his double album greatest hits. I think he stopped recording once the music genre changed to mostly rock. Speaking of his voice, Johnny Carson once said a gag on his show that Wayne Newton & Liberace shared a tub in the Pink Poodle Motel. Well Wayne got very offended, Newton showed up at Carson's show backstage and confronted Carson with, "you make a remark like that again and I'll knock you right on your a$$"! Eventually Johnny had Wayne on his show and the incident was forgotten.

chancho: Wayne Newton has appeared 41 times in something or other filmography wise:

Jan-07-11  Jim Bartle: I agree with your point about Newton, PB. It just seems nobody else has done anything similar to him. He's amazingly famous, but only in Las Vegas and only for his live show. Maybe the singer Ani DeFranco is a little like that in some ways, her records rarely heard on radio but with a small but fanatical following which buys her CDs (often directly from her) and goes to her shows.

Travis: I just watched the video of Newton explaining the Carson story to Larry King. It's Newton's side only, and I really doubt the story is 100% true, and Larry was never the type of tough interviewer to ferret out the truth. Plus Carson was not the sort of guy to come out and say Newton was lying. The big thing was that Carson had been making gay jokes about Newton.

Jan-07-11  technical draw: <JB> That's a pretty cool video. It will probably have the opposite effect that Newton wanted since his alleged bravura is straight out of The Godfather. Thus it re-enforces the idea of Newton's mafia connections.

Jan-08-11  Magnusch: <Phony Benoni> Hallo! I have no good internet connection for the moment (that's why I forced my sister (= magnuschfriend) to type in some clues of the solution to the helpmate puzzle).

Here is the complete solution.

Puzzle - helpmate in 8 moves, white to move first:

click for larger view

1.Ba2 d2 2.Be4 Kb6 3.Bxg2 Kc5 4.Be4 g2 5.Bb1 Kd5 6.Ba2 Ke4 7.Kf2 Kd3

click for larger view

and finally... 8.Bb1 check mate!

The white bishop moves a2 > b1 > e4 > g2 and then back the same route again! The white king has to take control over e3. Black king walks a long way to d3, but it's the only way to do it.

I think this was a very fine puzzle! After a while I thought it was impossible! I have learned that one has to be systematic to solve such a puzzle.

The first "candidate" to the mate square was (obviously) a8. Second try was to mate on a6. Third was d3.

Phony Benoni: <Magnusch> Thank you! I decided White needed to take the pawn on g2 to free up the king, but couldn't get the timing right. In particular, I didn't consider 1...d2, saving a move.

I was even trying to mate the Black king on h1. Now that's desperation!

Jan-09-11  Jim Bartle: The Marshawn Lynch run is similar to the famous Tommy Frazier run in the 96 Orange Bowl. Man, did some guys have clear shots at him and just bounced off.
