Jan-15-13  Abdel Irada: <SwitchingQuylthulg: But that wouldn't count for Most Informed 2012, now would it? :) >

Are you usually this derisory, or am I seeing personal animus?

Jan-15-13  achieve: For Most Informed I vote: <Softpaw>

I'd want to put in a fiver for this man, but it's only the one, huh?

Ok.

Jan-15-13  rogge: <personal animus?>

Maybe he's pulling your leg because he thinks self-nomination is silly, who knows :)

Jan-15-13  achieve: I'd say pull both his legs and floor him!

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Abdel Irada: Are you usually this derisory, or am I seeing personal animus?>

Neither. Like <rogge> says, I feel like someone who nominates himself for Most Informed (of all categories!) without even being sure what that <means> deserves a bit of needling :)

And if he isn't prepared to take it, then he deserves it all the more. But I don't have anything against you really.

Jan-15-13  rogge: «nudge, nudge, wink wink, know what I mean, know what I mean, say no more, say no more!»
Jan-15-13  Abdel Irada: Yes, I admit my self-nomination was a silly thing to do. I said as much when I withdrew it, and I'd think the matter would have dropped by now.

But since I'm apparently conversing with paragons of social virtue who would never make a mistake, I suppose I *should* expect to be insulted at every opportunity.

As for knowing what the category "means," I asked because it is ambiguous, as evidenced by at least one poster's misinterpretation, and I don't have the benefit of several years' experience on the site to guide me.

You may, however, want to consider predicating your judgment of me on more than one datum. Unless, of course, you don't mind being unjust.

Jan-15-13  bubuli55: My votes:

< SwitchingQuylthulg > best game collection.

< twinlark > most informed.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Abdel Irada> If my judgment of you were as negative as you seem to think, I wouldn't bother criticizing you. I only tend to criticize those I deem sensible enough to listen :)

I apologize if you feel insulted by what I said; I didn't mean to insult you. I don't even hold your self-nomination against you - as you said, we all make mistakes at times, and you're man enough to admit to this one - it just appeals to me as a source of delicious irony :)

Jan-15-13  Abdel Irada: <...it just appeals to me as a source of delicious irony>

And that is what I meant about "one datum." Do you really feel that you can judge my erudition on all matters from my uncertainty as to which of two possible meanings someone else attaches to an ambiguous phrase?

If so, perhaps I should challenge you to tell us, for example, everything you know about the history of the Battle of Ain Jalut (without looking it up). And while you're at it, explain why linguists have referred to "the structural genius of the Arabic language."

Now, of course, I would be a perfect fool to condemn you as an ignoramus if you failed to give me the answer to either or both of these questions. But to do so would be essentially analogous to the judgment you appear to have passed on me.

This said, I do make mistakes, and plenty of them. But I also try to confess to and learn from them in order not to repeat them; after all, it's much more fun making new mistakes.

In this case, I think the lesson, such as it was, has been learned, and further "needling" is unnecessary. I begin to feel like a pincushion.

<Phony Benoni> Best Game Collection

<twinlark> and <SwithingQuylthulg> Most Informed

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Abdel Irada> You make plenty of good points, but the delicious irony does not involve judgment, merely simple observation. The sheer image of the most informed member at Chessgames asking what Most Informed means strikes me as highly amusing :) Rest assured I won't pass judgment on you based on limited data - but it would, indeed, be a good idea to drop this.

Jan-15-13  Abdel Irada: <The sheer image of the most informed member at Chessgames asking what Most Informed means strikes me as highly amusing>

Why?

Since no one's knowledge is perfect, there is no incongruity in even a very well-informed individual confessing that he doesn't know something. Indeed, it could be argued that by such honest admissions one becomes better informed.

To me at least, the worst course of action, when one is unsure of something, is to pretend that one knows; this only ensures that one will never learn it.

But as an official list hasn't been posted yet, it's likely voting on today's categories will be extended.
