 | | offramp: The potential winners of player of the year would be annoyed. It is a string no serious player's bow should be without. |

 | | OhioChessFan: True, although Carlsen told me that winning it once was enough and he didn't need any more. |

 | | The Caissars: <FANS OF THE CHESSGAMES CAISSARS> We are changing thing up this year, and working on software that will automatically tally nominations and let you determine the winners in a fun and interactive way. More details will be available soon! |

 | | The Caissars: Great news!
We are going to be conducting the annual Caissars this year using a new automated method. The nomination process will be entirely eliminated. Every person gets one vote, and the one with the most votes wins. For this reason we will call players/members/games/etc. in contention "candidates" and not "nominees." Voting will be "closed", i.e. you will not know who has the most votes while the voting is taking place. However we've developed a system where you can optionally attach a comment to your vote, which should give votes some indication of which candidates are receiving the most attention. The new (tentative) list of awards eliminates two previous categories, "Best Profile" and "Best Analysis", and adds a new one, "Move of the Year". <BEST AVATAR>
<BEST USERNAME>
<MOST HELPFUL>
<BEST POST>
<FUNNIEST POSTER>
<MOST CONSTRUCTIVE>
<BEST GAME COLLECTION>
<MOST INFORMED>
<BEST HISTORIAN>
<GAME OF THE YEAR>
<PLAYER OF THE YEAR>
<BEST/WORST PUN>
<MOVE OF THE YEAR>
The software will let you vote on ALL categories at once, however for the sake of theatrics we will break it into two phases. The first phase will span from tomorrow (Tuesday the 10th) through Saturday the 14th. Then on Sunday we will tally up the results and announce the winners. Monday is a rest day, then the process begins anew from Tuesday the 16 through Saturday the 21st. If there are any last-minute ideas or suggestions, let's hear them now, as voting will begin tomorrow. |

 | | OhioChessFan: As <offramp> and I said, <Best Game Collection> meh. <Player of the Year> meh. Too late now, I'm sure, but maybe next year they can be removed. I like <Move of the Year> As for the two phases, I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't think I'm all that dense so I'm sure I won't be the only one to understand it. Phase 1.......announce winners....Phase 2. Huh? I agree totally with the closed voting. |
|

 | | The Caissars: It's not too late to change the list, but I think we should keep <Best Game Collection> to see if perhaps the new format breathes new life into it. There are some interesting and exotic collections out there, but the previous nomination/voting procedure didn't allow for much exploration. With the new format, there is no nomination, so anybody with the gumption to vote for a collection they find interesting will have it placed on the list for everybody else to see. Dull as it is, I don't see anything wrong with keeping <Player of the Year>. <As for the two phases, I have no idea what you're talking about.> I didn't explain it well. We're going to vote for categories 1-6 for the first week, then 7-13 for the 2nd week. We're going to take two days off between the voting phases in case Daniel needs to make software tweaks. Perhaps in future years we'll do it all at the same time but since the software is new, this is the safest way. Besides, it lets you focus on fewer items at one time, to pay more attention to each. <I agree totally with the closed voting.> I think of this as semi-closed voting, because of the comment feaure. The comment feature works like this: suppose you vote for, let's say, best game—you can write "One of the most amazing king hunts of the decade." Other voters will see that comment. So it will be a good guess that "most comments = most votes", but not necessarily, since commenting is optional. You might think of it like exit-polling. It gives a pretty good idea but only in the end will we reveal the true count. |

 | | Penguincw: Some comments/questions/whatever:
- Firstly, are people allowed to change their vote (and comment) mid-way through a phase? - Also, are the votes going to be anonymous?
- I assume you've already taken precautions against multi-accounts, so I'm not concerned about that. - This is a question not just to you, but something to everyone. I'm kinda indifferent on this, but what do you guys think of like, once a user or whatever wins a Caissar in a particular category, they're ineligible to win it again (doesn't have to be indefinite)? Thoughts? Well that's all for now. Looking forward to this. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <Penguin> I've always thought it odd to see repeat winners in almsot all of the categories. The "fluff" categories, avatar and user name and funniest, really, who needs to win more than once? There are some really good avatars and user names and really funny people on this site who are yet to be recognized. The more serious categories, everyone already knows who is the most helpful (tps, HMS, Wannabe, Phony, etc), constructive (Annie, JFQ, Annie, zanzibar, Annie, Switch, Annie, really, everyone in the Biographer's Bistro, Annie, etc). Best post and best pun seem okay to be a repeat winner. I'm about to convince myself we shouldn't even vote on this stuff! Okay, I have to stop now as I am getting a bit too serious about what is supposed to be a light hearted event. |

 | | The Caissars: <Firstly, are people allowed to change their vote (and comment) mid-way through a phase?> Totally, all you want, change your mind 1000 times over. <Also, are the votes going to be anonymous?> Yes, although with the comment feature you could divulge yourself. <I assume you've already taken precautions against multi-accounts, so I'm not concerned about that.> Good, neither are we :) |
|
| Jan-09-17 | | N0B0DY: is concerned about multi-accounts and likes to vote, too. Are there any reservations about it? |
|
Jan-09-17
 | | The Caissars: A few last minute changes.
The order of the categories is slightly amended, and some brief descriptions of the categories are mentioned above. Also, we're going to break the <BEST POST> category into two divisions: <BEST POST> — The best chess-related post.
<BEST OFFTOPIC POST> — The best post unrelated to chess.
That gives us 14 categories and two weeks to vote them in. Roll up your sleeves! |
|
Jan-09-17
 | | WannaBe: There's a slash instead of period for funniest category. |
|
Jan-10-17
 | | The Caissars: We're going to do a "soft launch" of the new software. That means I announce it here for the die-hards who will be sure to let me know if if anything is egregiously buggy. Here's the link to the voting page:
Caissars Voting Page
Everything "should" be self-explanatory on that page, but if you have any questions, please ask them here. I will get the ball rolling and add a few picks of my own. |
|
Jan-10-17
 | | OhioChessFan: I am not persuaded it's a good idea for voter #2 to see all the candidate votes of voter #1. It amounts to putting some names on a ballot but only after one person has voted for them. |
|
Jan-10-17
 | | OhioChessFan: Who to blame will be even more fun. |
|
Jan-10-17
 | | OhioChessFan: I think you definitely need instructions for people on how to copy/paste user names and kibitzes in order to vote. It may seem simple but not everyone is as familiar with the process as you might think. Left me hanging, <FSR> :P |
|
Jan-10-17
 | | WannaBe: I was able to submit a name for all the categories, without having to vote to anyone. (Or my submission automatically count as a vote?) If it counts as a vote, why is there a check box next to the name(s) when I go back to the page? Just curious. |
|
Jan-10-17
 | | OhioChessFan: I am not getting a warning message if I check both boxes for 2 candidates in any particular category. |
|
Jan-10-17
 | | OhioChessFan: I voted for Wannabe for best user name, making him the third candidate. I then went back in and voted by putting an x by the other 2 candidates. It made Wannabe disappear and gave me a vote for one of the 2, the last I voted for before Wannabe, I think, but no error message. |
|
Jan-10-17
 | | OhioChessFan: When I go back, there's no check marks. |
|
Jan-10-17
 | | OhioChessFan: Did you click the green box at the bottom that says "Submit Votes"? That's what makes your vote count and the checkmarks disappear. |
|
Jan-10-17
 | | OhioChessFan: Looking ahead, Best Pun, Game of the Year and Best Game Collection will be a little more difficult for voters and best move of the year really tough. Each category should have very explicit instructions on how to copy/past your vote. I assume the intent here is to stop some of the pointless arguing, but I think some people will find the new process a little too difficult and give up. I bet a sizable % of this site doesn't even know how to copy and paste. |
|
Jan-10-17
 | | OhioChessFan: If I accidentally post a user name instead of the kibitz date link, for best post I don't get an error message. Likewise if I post a kibitz date link instead of a user name for best user name, avatar, etc. I don't get an error message. |
|
Jan-10-17
 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <The Caissars> It might be a good idea to automatically convert chessforum links (http://www.chessgames.com/~whatever) to user links (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessuser?uname=whatever), given that only user links are supported. Alternatively, the software could just reject chessforum links the same way it rejects kpage links - but that would be less voter-friendly :) |
