TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

I haven't heard of them, sorry :-(

You should ask <notsodeepthought>, maybe he knows.

<I guess Italians are the main contributors to European Classical Music.>

Well, it's not just Italians, there's Austria (Mozart, Schubert, Haydn...), Germany (Beethoven, Brahms, Bach, Haendel ...), Hungary (Liszt, Bartok,...), France (Debussy & other modernists, Hoffmann, Bizet,...), Russia (Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov...), other countries (Chopin-Poland, Smetana-Czech, ...)

<Are you inclined towards classical or modern music(the use of electronic instruments)>

I like both, my favorite instrument by far is the Grand Piano. I'm an amateur (and by that I mean I suck) composer myself of both pop and classical music, but haven't managed to do something decent yet, I don't have the "feeling".

<"Music thesedays is nothing but organised noise">

Physics teachers... they're all "crazy" in some way... :-)

Oh.. Yes. Leanardo Da Vinci's contributions made me think that way.

Italians are born artists.

  TheAlchemist: <hitman84> OK! :-)

I don't really like neither our folk music nor our classical compositors (I know, it's not patriotic, but what can I do...). Well, it's not all bad, the song "Na Golici" by Avseniki is one of the biggest hits in Central Europe ever (Germany, Austria,...), it's really good, you should hear it!

Of our popular music, I like it very much, actually, I can recommend you a lot of artists, but maybe you can start with a group called... "Siddharta" :-). Check out their albums "Nord", "Id", "Rh-", they're all awesome in my opinion. They're a rock/hard rock band. They did some songs in English too, bud they're sung quite badly, I think.

Then there's another artist, Vlado Kreslin, he writes mostly ballads with some ethnic themes here and there. You can give some of his songs a try too.

Maybe this is a better link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...

From the groups that are mentioned, I also like Big Foot Mama. Maybe you can give "The Stroj" a try, they're an unusual, experimental band, they play only on drums and other conventional and unconventional percussion. They're not my thing exactly, but maybe you'll like them.

TheAlchemist: <hitman84> Also, maybe you should tell me more about what type of music you like, and I'll try to find some appropriate bands, if you want. Also, if you'll like any of the songs, tell me and I'll try to give a brief translation of the lyrics, if I'll find them around on the internet(I'm too lazy to listen to the song and copy it down :-)). You can't find Slovenian lyrics so easily on the internet, it's very frustrating sometimes:-(
Jul-07-06  hitman84: <TheAlchemist>Great!

I like Ballads and anything that is mellow.
I hate high decibles.

<tell me and I'll try to give a brief translation of the lyrics>I'm not sleeping tonight.I'll be d'loading as many songs as possible :)

<I can recommend you a lot of artists, but maybe you can start with a group called... "Siddharta" :-)>Hey is that an Indo-Slovene band ? :)

TheAlchemist: You can see some were done in 2 days (Punny games III and Punnier games II). Now it takes longer, because there aren't that many "punny" names left, and since English isn't my mother tongue, I tend to miss some puns the administrators cleverly come up with for the GoTD, or I'm not quite familiar with all the possible cultural references.
Jul-08-06  Chopin: <English isn't my mother tongue> Your English is amazing!

  TheAlchemist: You're making me blush.

:-)

Well, thanks, I studied it for 13 years (1 year before elementary school, 8 years in elementary school and 4 years in high school), so some results had to be visible. :-)

Jul-08-06  Chopin: <Well, thanks, I did study it for 13 years (1 year before elementary school, 8 years in elementary school and 4 years in high school), so some results had to be visible. :-)> By the way, how many languages can you speak?

Jul-08-06  dakgootje: <I tend to miss some puns the administrators cleverly come up with for the GoTD> Aye, your not the only one ^^

TheAlchemist: <Chopin> I can mainly speak English and Italian, but I have a harder time actually speaking than reading or listening. I understand much more than I can actually come up with during a conversation :-). I also speak some Croatian and Serbian, since they are quite similar to Slovenian. I studied German in High school, but I forgot most of it, since I didn't use it at all.

Well, we have to leave something for them too :-)

Jul-09-06  monad: <TheAlchemist: You're making me blush. >

Blush some more! I was just about to pay you the same compliment. That was some education you had! Your teachers are top-notch. And then there's me: I am not even quite sure where exactly Slovenia is. (me blushing from shame ;-)

Are you as competent verbally? And which pronunciation do you favour? UK/US/SA/Australian? I am intrigued.

TheAlchemist: <monad> Thanks! I'm not quite that skilled verbally, probably because I don't have any real practice. I was once in London and that was it. At school we were learning British English, but I'm more inclined to use the American pronounciation, I guess I picked it up over the years through movies etc. :-)

Here: http://www.seastour.com/europe/slov... :-)

Jul-09-06  monad: <I guess I picked it up over the years through movies etc. :-)>

You know what? Your TV broadcasters are doing you a tremendous favour by giving subtitles, rather than dubbing the English language. I reckon that is why Germans have trouble with their pronunciation: everything is dubbed.

Very hard on the nerves as well, having two languages spoken at the same time in some broadcasts.

I follow Le Tour de F. on German ARD and ZDF tv ( the British commentators on Eurosport are uninformed and irritating beyond belief). The German coverage is fantastic, but when they interview a non-German speaker I can't hear neither the original language nor the dubbed German.

I had to learn German specially in order to follow the cycling. I'll have to go there one of these days.

Punnable?

TheAlchemist: <blingice> Maybe :-). I have a Wind pun in there somewhere already, but I'll try and squeeze this one in too. Do you have any ideas?
Jul-10-06  dakgootje: Yes but that was De Wind vs Timman, 1965 with De Wind and this is with MM Wind
