 | | jessicafischerqueen: And <Wilson> is psychic too!! Just finished posting a Nf6 game to find that he is ordering our Captain to post Nf6!! |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <All premium CG.com members> I'm not a premium member and my database is a dinosaur, so if there are any recent sound top level GM deviations from 7.Nf6 please hunt them down to see if there is anything interesting and intriguing we might have a look at? |
|
Feb-06-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Otherwise, it's clear from the info I have anyway that Nf6 is the overwhelming main line here... A fact <Wilson (chessmoron)> probably knew in his sleep... Well I'm here to work and learn.
NO FUN

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Also, please look at range of white responses to Nf6? <anand> f3 (2005)Rapid
<shirov> Be2 (1999) Linares |

Feb-06-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: So Ng4 drove back the bishop-- and Nf6 can thus now be played without loss of tempo-- Is White playing 7...Nf6 8.Bd3 sound?
Or, white can play 8.Bg5! and we can play Ng4 again... and then once more and we're all done!!! |
|
Feb-06-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: What about 7. ...Nc6? Is that sound, or just plain crazy? With crap database and no Premium membership, Jess reduced to shuffling pieces around on her wooden board with her wooden head... Sorry if I'm spamming the forum teammates but I'm just so darned excited. It's my first team game ever! |
|
Feb-06-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: dang it I see I made a mistake already- Hoezlelll played 7... g6 and he's not over 2600... I kind of like the look of his fianchettoed bishop tho, even tho he lost the game... |
|
| Feb-06-07 | | TTLump: <jessicafischerqueen: What about 7. ...Nc6? Is that sound, or just plain crazy?> There are 12 games in the CG data-base with the position after 7 ...Nc6, 3 White, 3 Black and 6 draws. One game in particular is interesting, <Nedev-Gelfland, 2004>, in which Gelfland, with Black, ekes out a win over a 200-point weaker player. Most of the other games seem to be weaker players with White either beating or drawing their stronger opponent. I am going to try and look at the other games before tomorrow night. |

Feb-06-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Excellent work <Mr. Lump!!> I will have a look at the game you cited. |

<Reticulated Giraffes> need not apply. Sorry about that but you're all just too dam tall to fit into chess hall...> recalling something from your profile, I hope this is an indication that you are saving the <savant> part for the tactical analysis! :-)

Feb-06-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: LOL <TTLump> not to worry, not to worry... the <Zebra> is the only <ungulate> on our team (hoofed animal) so it was merely a "Zebra call." I haven't actually lost my mind... yet. |
|
| Feb-06-07 | | TTLump: I find the "recommended" move, 7...Nf6 uninspiring and White's book response to it, 8.Be3 somewhat dreary, because it puts us right back into standard Nadjdorf or Scheveningen, making the whole Ng4 excursion somewhat pointless, unless we respond 8... Ng4! (Can you see the look on their faces!?), But it IS no doubt the most prudent course, however ... At this point, I am undecided but believe both Nc6 and Nf6 deserve serious analysis and consideration over the next 40 hours. I think we are approaching the point where we must begin to "wean" ourselves from the standard book lines and start looking for potential innovations. |
|
Feb-06-07
 | | jessicafischerqueen: <TTlump> Nf6 isn't pointless-- It drives back the bishop without losing a tempo... They won't just play Bg5 right back (I was joking about that in my earlier post)... But I do kind of like Nc6 as we develop and leave our other Knight on g4. However, the outpost Knight can be chased away so easily with h3, so Nc6 doesn't win a tempo for us or anything like that. There's probably a good reason Nf6 is played in virtually every single GM game with players over 2600 ElO. It's probably best. There'll be plenty of time to look for tactical novelties and complicated shenanigans once we're out of book with a solid position that offers us good attacking counterplay. However, I agree we should look for other candidate moves. Especially when more than just us two join in here. I think everyone on our team is a better/more experienced player than me. It's quite possible that our "pros" (and thank God we have them) may just take Nf6 as a given. It is the main line, without doubt. But any time spent looking for alternate candidates is hardly wasted. That's what is great about this format. Any investigation any of us do will help that individual learn more about chess. And it will help the team also, even if the move a person investigates isn't chosen. |
