TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

Apr-08-07  mckmac: Easter greetings everyone!
Apr-08-07  Marco65: Just a quick look at White's alternatives here:

21.Bh3 fxg6 22.hxg6 Bxg6

21.h6 Bxg6 22.hxg7 Re8

21.gxh7+ Kxh7 22.h6 g6

Against other moves (and maybe also against 21.h6) 21...Rc8 should be fine

Apr-09-07  Eyal: <TheAlchemist> Hello - very interesting game you're playing. I noticed you commented on the Tadic-Solak game in <shr0pshire>'s forum, so I just wanted to tell you there's some discussion of it in <Dom>'s forum as well (following a post by <achieve> where he copied the game).

TheAlchemist: <Eyal> Hi! Yeah, I noticed. I read through some of your analyses, but didn't have (or take the) time to study it more in depth. Going through the game quickly, I was very impressed, I was just a little sorry to find out who was at the losing end :-)
Apr-10-07  Marco65: <TheAlchemist> Did you notice also that MFO moved?

Wake up <Team> 21.Bd5 was played yesterday at noon!!

TheAlchemist: I didn't, damn. Should we have trouble in deciding our move, we could always use a timeout.

Anyway, I definetely won't be around tomorrow for posting the move, so someone will have to do it instead of me. Any takers?

TheAlchemist: Anyway, I propose the continuation 21...Kh8 and here

a) 22.gxf7 Qa5 23.Bb3 (23.b3 Rbc8) transposing to a line we already analyzed (<Marco's> post above) that goes 23...Be4 24.Rhg1 d5

b) 22.h6 fxg6 23.hxg7+ Kxg7 24.fxe5 Nxe5 25.Bh6+ Kh8 26.Bxf8 Bxf8 and we have two connected passed pawns for the exchange and white's attack has cooled down. Plus, our dark square weaknesses aren't so important, because he doesn't have that bishop anymore.

Apr-10-07  hitman84: They chose Bd5 first!

One thing I've learnt from the game so far -- The move order is of utmost importance!

Maybe this what makes Najdorf special :)

<I definetely won't be around tomorrow for posting the move, so someone will have to do it instead of me. Any takers?>

<TheAlchemist>I'll volunteer.

<b) 22.h6 fxg6 23.hxg7+ Kxg7 24.fxe5 Nxe5 25.Bh6+ Kh8 26.Bxf8 Bxf8 and we have two connected passed pawns for the exchange and white's attack has cooled down. Plus, our dark square weaknesses aren't so important, because he doesn't have that bishop anymore.>

I agree on that.

Apr-10-07  Marco65: I think their most dangerous plan is 22.Bxf7 rather than 22.gxf7, followed by h6 and Qh2, but I have just started analysing.

Tomorrow I'll probably be driving when the move is due, I can't take the responsibility to replace our Captain

  TheAlchemist: <hitman84> Thanks!
Apr-10-07  hitman84: <Marco>Yes, that looks a dangerous line.

TheAlchemist: <TEAM> I just read it on <brankat's> forum, apparently <Akavall> made a mistake, our move is actually due by 12:00 <PM> on Wednesday, and not <AM>, or 0:00 AM on Thursday. If we keep this up, it will be very uncomfortable for me to sustain it (it's 6 AM here and I'm not exactly fond of waking up so early, especially if I don't have to). <So, I propose we either make the move tomorrow around 4-6 PM or request a timeout>, either way, I'd like to get back on the "usual" schedule, as I'll surely be around by then (tomorrow too). I know that's is more uncomfortable for some of you from the eastern hemisphere, but no schedule is perfect, plus I think we worked well that way, didn't we?
Apr-10-07  Marco65: <TheAlchemist> Let's try to anticipate as you wish, if there will be still open discussions we will request a timeout

<hitman84> I analysed it and I think:

a) the immediate 21...Rc8 is more forcing than 21...Kh8

b) if 22.Bxf7 we don't have to give the bishop a chance to get back to b3 by sacrificing our rook, that in this case seems to work:

21...Rc8 22.Bxf7+ Rxf7 23.gxf7 Kh8 (otherwise if 23...Kxf7 24.Qd5+ and then c2 can be protected by a rook)

click for larger view

a) 24.c3 bxc3 25.Nxc3 Qa5 26.Rdg1 d5 27.fxe5 Nxe5 and now:

a1) 28.Bh6 gxh6 29.Rg8+ (29.Qxh6? Rxc3+! 30.Kd1 [30.bxc3 Qxc3+ 31.Kd1 Bc2+ 32.Ke2 Qd3+ 33.Kf2 Qf3+ 34.Ke1 Bb4+ 35.Qd2 Bxd2+ 36.Kxd2 Qd3+ and 37...Nxf7 ] Qa4+ 31.b3 Rd3+ 32.Qd2 [32.Ke2 Qe4+ leads to mate] 32...Rxd2 33.Kxd2 Qd4+ and 34...Nxf7 ) 29...Rxg8 30.fxg8=Q+ Kxg8 31.Qxd5+ Qxd5 32.Nxd5 with an unclear endgame to me

a2) 28.Qg2? Rxc3+ 29.bxc3 Qxc3+ 30.Kd1 Bg4+

a3) 28.Kd1 Bg4+ 29.Kc2 Qxa2 still with an open fight is something that must be better analysed

b) 24.Rdg1 Rxc2+ 25.Qxc2 Bxc2 26.Kxc2 Qa5 27.b3 is unclear but I think favourable to us

TheAlchemist: Ok, just in case anyone got confused (I know I did), I made a few mistakes when referring to the time of the deadline. So, it's officially at <midnight> (i.e. 12:00 AM), so there shouldn't be any confusion anyomore, I hope. I read the wikipedia article and everyhing they list as potentially confusing confused me :-)
Apr-10-07  mckmac: Just quickly caught up with everyone's work.

<Marco> In that line starting 21 ...Rc8 (22.Bxf7+ Rxf7 23.gxf7 Kh8 24.c3 bxc3 25.Nxc3 Qa5 26.Rdg1) an alternative to 26...d5 might be 26...Qxa2 27.Kd1 then simply 27...Qxf7.I think we are better here.

Apr-10-07  mckmac: ...and if 26.a3 exf4 27.Bxf4 Nc5 (28.b4 Qxa3+ 29.Qb2 Nb3#)

26.a3 exf4 27.Bd4 Ne5 28.Bxe5 (or 28..Nd3+) dxe5

Apr-11-07  mckmac: I had a look at this position again. It can be reached if they capture with the pawn,so therefore Rc8 and Kh8 can transpose.

21.Bd5 Rc8(Kh8)
22.gxf7+ Kh8(Rc8)
23.Bb3 Be4

An immediate 24.h6 could lead to

24.h6 g6
25.Rhg1 d5(dubious here)
26.fxe5 Nxe5
27.Bd4 Bf6
28.Qf4

Apr-11-07  mckmac: If after 23.Bb3...23.exf4,then 24.Bxf4 and 24...Rxf7 25.Bxf7 Rxc2+ 26.Qxc2 Bxc2 27 Kxc2 Qf8 28.Be6 doesn't work for black.

23.Bb3 exf4 24.Bxf4 Ne5 25.Qd5 (25...Nxf7 26.Qxf5 Ng5 27.Qg4,..and 25...Bxc2 26.Bxc2 Nxf7)

Apr-11-07  Marco65: <mckmac> It seems you found many improvements on ...Rc8, but I don't have the time to follow all of them now.

<TheAlchemist> At what time in our zone (CET) do you plan to post the move? If it is beyond 11pm I might be able to think it over again, otherwise consider ...Rc8 as my vote. I'm also in favour of a timeout if others agree, we can't keep on playing with the opinion of 3 or 4 members only

Apr-11-07  hitman84: <mckmac>Great analysis, its nice to see you've considered all the different move orders.

<Marco>I didn't consider Rxf7, great find!

I agree. Rc8 is more forcing.

<Marco>I've taken the responsibility of posting the move. We are 12 hours away from deadline. I don't think we need a timeout.

I'll once again go through all the analysis.

Apr-11-07  hitman84: <TheAlchemist>'s line.

21. Bd5 Rc8
22. Bb3 Kh8
23. gxf7 Qa5
24. Kb1 exf4

Apr-11-07  hitman84: <TEAM>Shall I post Rc8 ?
Apr-11-07  chessmoron: Rc8 for me as well.

I guess you can. But it's only 2:08 p.m. EDT
