TheAlchemist: Thank you, you too!

Dec-09-24 Ding Liren vs D Gukesh, 2024 (replies)

TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

   Oct-28-23 D Lazavik vs Wojtaszek, 2023 (replies)

TheAlchemist: White played a seemingly clever sacrifice, but the refutation on move 25 was simply stunning

TheAlchemist: <goodevans: Will we have another Milan-based pun tomorrow when its two big football teams face each other in the Champions League Semi-Final? https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsl... It's a huge reach, but you could call it even timelier. Unfortunately Slovaks call it ...

TheAlchemist: Amazing, what a finish, what a match. Congratulations, Ding!

TheAlchemist: Great pun!

TheAlchemist: I'd have to dig out contemporary magazines to be sure, but I think it said Black simply left the playing hall and never returned, leaving everyone puzzled (teammates included).

TheAlchemist: Terrible news. Rest in peace, PB.

   Oct-17-21 Keres vs A Sakovski, 1936 (replies)

TheAlchemist: I also forgot to add that both of those are masculine forms, the feminine one would be "šahistka". I was a bit too fast with the reply.

WannaBe: I thought, therefore, I was.
May-09-07  chessmoron: I'm so sorry guys but today was an early exit to classes and I just got back 1:48 PDT.

<Marco65: 28...Bxd5 29.Qxd5 Rc7 30.Bd6 Rc8 31.Rf1 Bf6 32.h6>

What about 29...Bf4...at least protect from Rf1? What do you think?

May-09-07  Marco65: <chessmoron> do you mean 28...Bxd5 29.Qxd5 Bf6? Interesting. e.g. 30.Bf4 Rc5 31.Qxd6 Rxh5

If only you posted this before... I don't trust voting 28...Bxd5 without anlysing it further, and this time I don't have time. But maybe other can be convinced and I'll accept any decision

TheAlchemist: What now, our move is due in 10 minutes. I'm going to post Bd8, it seems to have the biggest support.
May-09-07  chessmoron: This is frustrating. All you guys are in your midnight hour and I really don't know what to do. Where is half our team? Don't say you don't have time. 3-5 minutes or Yeah "I agree (or disagree) with that" is enough.

TheAlchemist: Well, I posted 28...Bd8. God help us.
May-09-07  Marco65: <chessmoron> I think it's well now by now that we are 4. As for my vote, I'd rather abstain this time because I liked 28...Bd8 but suddenly finding 28...Bxd5 better, but I don't trust myself, the former was more completely analysed. Zebra said is for 28...Bd8, TheAlchemist I think the same, if one of them has been convinced by you the move can be ...Bxd5 otherwise it stays ...Bd8

  TheAlchemist: Also, I like 28...Bxd5 29.Bxd5 better. 29...Rc7 30.Bd4, followed by something like Rg1, h6 etc.
May-09-07  Marco65: Sorry I wrote that too late.

<chessmoron> Just as a suggestion, you spent some time to try to refute other proposals, but too little to support yours. You were probably right that "Qxd5 is not that intimidating" but I needed your latest concrete analysis to convince myself.

Now what is done is done, also 28...Bd8 doesn't lose on the spot, it will surprise them a little, and depending on their answer it's possible that we simply transpose.

TheAlchemist: <chessmoron> I'm sorry it ended this way too, I'm mostly disappointed that some people left without any notice. It's a shame, it used to be fun in the beginning, now it feels more like an obligation than anything. Maybe that's why some people have left.
May-09-07  chessmoron: <Marco65> I know I haven't done a lot of thought but I really had a hard time working this and having write essays and other stuff at the same time.

<TheAlchemist> It's okay I feel. Bd8 was my 2nd choice and a5 as more third choice.

May-09-07  Marco65: <TheAlchemist> <Also, I like 28...Bxd5 29.Bxd5 better> you mean you like 29.Bxd5 better than 29.Qxd5, not 28...Bxd5 better than 28...Bd8 or I wouldn't understand your vote.

I also think 28...Bxd5 can end up with our king being exposed, maybe without consequence, but who knows? For instance

28...Bxd5
29. Bxd5 Rc7
30. Bb6 Rc8
31. Rf1 Bf6
32. Bd4 Qe7
33. Bxf6 gxf6
34. Qh6 Kh8
35. Qxf6+ Qxf6
36. Rxf6 Ne5
37. Rxd6 with better endgame for White, just like in other variations.

My last two cents on this (abandoned) variation

May-09-07  Marco65: <Maybe that's why some people have left> Some people made it become like this by leaving!

Good night

May-10-07  Marco65: <WannaBe> It's nice to see someone is still looking at our game here!
May-10-07  Zebra: Sorry I couldn't participate in the final discussion. I was not enthusiastic about Bd8, just the alternatives seemed worse (though I was looking again at Bxd5, having rejected it earlier).
May-10-07  WBP: <Team> <It's nice to see someone is still looking at our game here!> I'm still watching as well.

Best, Bill

May-11-07  Marco65: <Team> I thought of it a little, and if they decide to strangle us slowly rather than grabbing material we are in trouble:

29.Rg1 Kh8 30.Bd4 Ne5 31.h6 g6 32.Qf4 Bxd5 (also 32...Bf5 33.Re1 and now?) 33.Bxd5 Rc7 34.Re1

click for larger view

with the threat of Rxe5! and I really don't know what to do now. Improvements must be found before that point. Or just cross our fingers and hope they play something different!

May-11-07  Zebra: Could we play an early Bxd5 and then Bf6 instead of g6?
May-11-07  Marco65: <Zebra> Post a line because I don't find it working in practice.

The only alternatives I found (not necessarily improvements) are the risky 29.Rg1 g6!? and 29.Rg1 Kh8 30.Bd4 Ne5 31.h6 Bg6!?

While 29.Rg1 Kh8 30.Bd4 Bg5? 31.Rxg5 Nxg5 32.Qxg5 Qd7 33.h6 is simply lost

As is 29.Rg1 Kh8 30.Bd4 Ne5 31.h6 g6 32.Qf4 Bf5 33.Re1 Bf6 34.Kb1 Qd8 35.Nxf6 Qxf6 36.Rxe5 Bxc2+ (useless) 37.Bxc2 Qxf4 38.Re8#

May-11-07  Marco65: Still suggesting crossing fingers or praying Caissa as our best move here...
May-11-07  Zebra: <Marco> Sorry, I had missed a tempo.

'Push Da Button! Push Da Button!!'

Sorry, can't get that song out of my head...

May-11-07  Marco65: I don't know if Caissa listened to me. At first I think 29.Rg1 was much stronger, but it happened before and I know I'll change my mind during the analysis.

I remember I proposed 29...g6 at this point, but this might not be necessary. All in all, what are they threatening now? hxg7 just create a shield for our king.

We might play more actively 29...Qe5 (getting rid of the Ba4 threat once and for all) and now:

30.Rg1 g6

30.Bd4 Qf5 31.Bxg7? Bg5 32.Ne3 Bxc2 33.Bxc2 Bxe3

See you tomorrow morning
