 | | WannaBe: There are 2344 other Uros? =) |
| Aug-14-07 | | brankat: <TheAlchemist> Wow! This was quick. I'll e-mail You in 5 minutes. |
Aug-14-07
 | | TheAlchemist: <WannaBe> No, maybe even more. That's just some kind of combination from my DOB, that's all. |
| Aug-14-07 | | brankat: <TheAlchemist> The e-mail is sent. Thank You once again. Of course, I could also give You <WannaBe>'s address :-) |
Aug-14-07
 | | TheAlchemist: Umm... tempting as it may be, I'm going to have to resist. I'll notify you when I send it. |
Aug-15-07
 | | WannaBe: You're born on the 44th day on the 23rd month?! |
| Aug-15-07 | | brankat: Or April, 23/1984? Almost as young as <WannaBe> :-) |
Aug-15-07
 | | TheAlchemist: <brankat> Exactly 1 year later. |
| Aug-15-07 | | brankat: Then You and <jessica> are almost like twins :-) |
| Aug-23-07 | | brankat: <TheAlchemist> Meant to ask You a few times, regarding You University studies. Are You now getting close to graduating? Judging by Your age I'd guess, the 4th year? So, You could be done in about a year, perhaps a year and a half? If so, any plans for later? Thanks. |
Aug-23-07
 | | TheAlchemist: <brankat> Hello! Yes, I'm in my fourth year, my program is 9 semesters long (so 4 1/2 years). I think/hope I'll have finished all exams by next fall (the 9th semester is like 2 semesters condensed into 1), after which I could start working on my thesis. So make that about 2 years, I'm not in such a hurry, hehe. Actually, I'm in a kind of "zugzwang" right now, I'm fed up with school, but I don't feel like working yet either. And I have no idea what I'm going to do later, I'm not much good with long term planning anyway, I even landed in pharmacy more by coincidence. Of course you can guess that I'm not much good in chess strategy either :-) |
| Aug-24-07 | | brankat: <TheAlchemist> It is kinda funny how some things hardly ever change. I graduated from Zagreb University, Faculty of Philosophy (History, Anthropology) more than 30 years ago. My situation then was about exactly the same as Yours is now :-) It was mostly the same or similar story with most of my friends, too. We usually start attending University at the age of 19 when we know very little, if anything, with any degree of certainty and/or conviction. So, it turned out most of us chose "wrong" schools :-) and then had to live with it later. As for Your current "zugzwang" position, it may not be so bad actually. Next 2 years provide You with a lot of "tempos" to come up with ideas/plans for a later course of action. All the best to You. |
| Aug-24-07 | | brankat: <TheAlchemist> One more thing. You mentioned a couple of months ago something about plans for a Tournament in Portoroz next year, to mark the 50th anniversary of Portoroz, 1958 Intz. Any news about it? Is there going to be a Tournament? Thank you. |
Aug-24-07
 | | TheAlchemist: <brankat> Hi! I don't know, most of the preparations are now focused on the open tournament in September, maybe it's some sort of a rehearsal (and it's probably advertised as such, I translated a few e-mails and it seems we will have guests from Nigeria and Iran, it's never happened before in previous editions). But I'm sure it will be organized, the president of our chess club is staying in Slovenia just for that, while his family had already moved to Australia in July. I'm sure he wouldn't want to waste a whole year for nothing. |
| Aug-24-07 | | brankat: <TheAlchemist> Thanks for the info. I sure hope there is Portoroz, 2008! It certainly would be an appropriate way to mark/remember a truly great Portoroz, 1958: -- Tal on his way to the title, -- Bobby becoming a GM, -- Gligoric qualifying for the Candidates for the 2nd time, -- Larsen being Fischer's second ;-) -- Bronstein failing to qualify by losing to Cardoso etc. Anyway, keep us posted should there be any new developments. |
| Sep-13-07 | | brankat: Hi Uros! I just received the cards today. Thank You very much. I am not very familiar with the Slovenian Adriatic coast, although, other than Portoroz, I do remember names of Koter and Piran, not the other ones. But overall the pictures did stir old memories of our beautiful blue Adriatic! Haven't seen it since 1978! Once again thank You so much. I'll send You some cards of Vancouver and the surrounding area of British Columbia. |
| Sep-15-07 | | meloncio: <TheAlchemist><Basket Championship> How could you lose this game against Greece? 12 points up and less than three minutes to play... Now we'll have to do the work :-) |
Sep-15-07
 | | TheAlchemist: <meloncio> Grrr... that completely ruined my day, week, month... I couldn't even be happy about passing the grade at school. And I can't help but say: typical. At least concerning basketball (and some other sports that aren't relevant right now) we are losers, chokers, whatever you call it. It's in our DNA. We've had discussions about the infamous chokes by our sportsmen and the list is really long, especially since we have few world class athletes. Unfortunately, I finally believed we had found the right combination, without many so-called stars and with a better team spirit, even our coach seemed matured, and then it all imploded like that. And today we repeated it. Anyway, good luck, although I'm rooting for Lithuania to win. |
| Sep-15-07 | | chessmoron: Damn. I just found out. |
Sep-15-07
 | | TheAlchemist: <chessmoron> Yeah, but it's not such a shock anymore. They are tired and mentally exhausted, we have played the whole tournament with just 8 players, you can't go on like that for long. Even though, we should have been able to take both games home safely. Call it bad luck, the Slovenian syndrome, whatever, it's just not meant to be. Remember last year against Turkey? They hit impossible 3's towards the end when we had a won game. Different players, same thing. |
| Sep-15-07 | | meloncio: Oooooooooofff! 82-77, what a tough game! And tomorrow the grand final. And yes, everybody's saying that the other team will be Lithuania. |
| Sep-15-07 | | chessmoron: If Spain wins the Eurobasket Finals, Slovenia needs to be 6th place to get in the qualification round. |
Sep-15-07
 | | TheAlchemist: <chessmoron> But we can't be 6th anymore :-). 7th place still leads to the olympic qualifiers and the direct entrance to the next Eurobasket. France will be a tough opponent, but I think they're as destroyed mentally as we are. Both teams will have to find the necessary strength and motivation to salvage at least something. I'm skeptical about our chances, I hope I'm wrong. |
| Sep-17-07 | | brankat: <TheAlchemist> I'm out of touch. What tournament is taking place? European Championship? I'll send You a package this week, probably Wednesday or Thursday. |
| Sep-17-07 | | meloncio: <brankat><What tournament is taking place? European Championship?> Yes. And we -Spain, playing at home in Madrid- lost the finals in the very last second, 60-59, missing the last and desperate try. Everything was ready to celebrate the victory, so we feel so bad as you can easily imagine. |
