Jan-15-06  misguidedaggression: I just posted it here: User: hayton3 That's the first forum I saw with problems posted.
Jan-16-06  RonB52734: <misguided> Excellent! It was good to meet you today. Stop in to the Pittsburgh Chess Club some Saturday between noon and 2 if you ever get the chance.
Jan-16-06  misguidedaggression: The problem is that I usually work on Saturdays, and it's over an hour drive, but I'll think about it. Is it in Wm Pitt Union as well?
Jan-16-06  Benzol: <WannaBe> How did and <EmporerAtahualpua> play your game against one another? <mandar> wants to play against me but I'm lacking the computer skills. So what did you guys do?
Jan-16-06  RonB52734: <misguided> <I usually work on Saturdays> ah, bad luck. And it's not on the Pitt campus; it's in Squirrel Hill, in an old elementary school that's been converted into a community building.
Jan-16-06  sitzkrieg: <Benzol> if u mean the consultancy/group game, we have teams and each team uses a page to decide on moves based on majority voting system. We post the game on a "neutral" page, in this case the "me to play" page.
Jan-16-06  RonB52734: [To avoid confusion: the following replaces and expands an earlier post:]

For a slightly different angle on the current position:

White to play after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.c3 dxc3 5.Nxc3 Nf6 6.Bc4 Nc6 7.e5 Nd7 8.Bxf7+ Kxf7 9.e6+ Ke8 10.exd7+
Bxd7

Note that you have to ignore the "pre-printed" coordinates on the board -- I don't believe you can actually "turn" them around.

Here, assuming White doesn't play anything forcing, I'm looking at activating our dark-squared Bishop. 11...g6 is the quickest way, but we need to have an idea of where we want our King to go. 11...g6 seems to rule out parking His Majesty on the King side.

11...e5 looks playable, although there are holes at e4 and d5 and our dark-squared Bishop isn't going anyplace real soon. You would think that 11...e5, followed by ...Be7 , looking toward ...Bf6 and Rf8, with the King eyeing g8 is possible, but White can slow or stop that with Ne4 and Bg5: 11.0-0 e5 12.Ne4 Bf5 [allows the Queen to give the needed second defense to the d6 pawn, and forces the e4 Knight to choose] 13.Bg5 Qd7 [NOT] 13...Be7 14.Bxe7 Qxe7 15.Nxd6] [diagram after 13...Qd7:]

Jan-16-06  sitzkrieg: jeej. I told u. Kxd7 and the king would v walked all the way to a save haven on the queenside. But noooo u all wouldnt listen:) Now what. I dont like e5 to much based on general grounds ron already mentioned. g6 may kind of exclude a later move of the e pawn so i am not sure about that one too. However i dont see better moves. Ill just wait and see what they play and what the rest of you come up with.
Jan-16-06  RonB52734: <sitzkreig> Actually, I'm starting to like the position at the end of my last post the more I look at it. As I see that position, white really has to retreat the Knight to c3 or g3. Everything else just loses material.

After that, Be7 is possible and the position is getting closer to equal.

In fact, I think this is why White won't, in the end, play 12.Ne4.

WannaBe: So, if white plays 11.0-0 we are currently debating 11...e5 11...e6 or 11...g6

If we go 11...g6 then have Bg7, it's kinda pointing at the wrong side of white's board. (But it can always be fixed later.)

If e6 white squared bishop is blocked in, and Q can be placed at either b6 or a5.

I would think, once that's done, get the rooks out to c and f-file for attack/defensive purposes.

I am going to rule out e6. It's too restrictive for piece development.

I will vote for either e5 or g6. Can anyone else give support/argument for either move?

Jan-16-06  NakoSonorense: I like 11...e5. No reason for it, just to have more control of the center.

we have to wait and see what their plans are. They are the ones a pawn down, so sooner or later they will have to attack and we will be waiting for them. :)

Jan-16-06  RonB52734: Ok, no surprise, they castled:

  WannaBe: I, too, vote e5.
Jan-16-06  RonB52734: <Nako Sonorense>, <WannaBe> and <RonB> for ...e5.

Let's give <Robin01> and <sitzkreig> a chance to propose a startling alternative.

Jan-16-06  RonB52734: I also want to spend some time looking at the line 11...e5 12.Bg5

Right now I'm seeing 11...e5 12.Bg5 Be7 13.Ne4 Bf5 14. Bxe7 Kxe7 [NOT 14...Qxe7 15.Nxd6+ which loses one or two pawns, including our passer]. This line might then bring 15. Nxd6+ Qxd6 16.Qxd6+ Kxd6, but that looks like it costs White too much material for an attack they can't immediately finish.

Another possibility is 11...e5 12.Bg5 Qc3

And lastly we should evaluate what happens if white responds to 11...e5 with either

12.Re1 or
12.Ng5 followed by Qh5+ (potentially very dangerous!)

I haven't had a great deal of time to pursue these; I just want to make sure we're not stepping into something here.

WannaBe: <RonB52734> I can spend some time tonight looking at it, after white has responded. Or even if they don't!
Jan-16-06  RonB52734: Ok, it's 5:00 here, so I can spend another moment or 6 on this.

First: If 11...e5 12.Nh4 or 12. Ng5, an immediate 12...g6 is required to prevent 13.Qh5. [thus, not 11...e5 12.Nh4 Be7?? 13.Qh5+ g6 14.Nxg6 hxg6?? 15. Qxh1+]

Second: if 11...e5 12.Ng5 g6 13.Qf3, then our Queen must move out of the way, to c8 or d7, so that 14.Qf7+ is not 14.Qf7#, and so that, on 14.Nf7, we are not forked Q and R. In this line, our light-squared Bishop must stay on the h3-c8 diagonal because of some dangerous tactics involving a White N or Q getting on e6.

Finally, 11...e5 12.Re1 doesn't seem to present any immediate tactical threats.

So... I submit to the group that 11...e5 does not step into the path of disaster. But you have my analysis. See if you can crack it.

Jan-16-06  sitzkrieg: Nice analysis. But its clear you really don't disrespect our opponents enough. Also i don't see why an immediate g6 is necessary after Ng5 (Nh4 is not so good:))since we can also play that after the queen sortie.

Anyway you persuaded me. I vote for e5 too.

Jan-16-06  RonB52734: <sitzkreig> Yeah, Nh4 Qxh4 looks fine for us. Doh!
Jan-16-06  sitzkrieg: why do you keep saying sitzkrEIg? u hurt my feelings
Jan-16-06  sitzkrieg: :D
Jan-16-06  RonB52734: <sitzkrieg> geez, it must be oldtimers disease settin' in. By the way, have you heard of the new herbal remedy, Gincko Viagra?
Jan-16-06  RonB52734: We haven't heard from <Robin01> at all today. I don't see any benefit in posting our next move tonight. If we did, White would have all night and tomorrow to think about it.

WannaBe: keep them guessing. I'm gonna start analyzing the current position pretty soon.
Jan-16-06  Robin01: I am back. Sorry, long day doing something I did not expect. 11...e5 looks good. I looked at the reply of 12.Ng5, and I think that is good for us. We would then play 12...Be7, if they play 13.Qh5+, then we play 13...g6; 14.Qh6, 14...Bf8; 15.Qh4, 15...h6, then the knight has to move back to f3, and we trade quenns. So 12.Ng5 is not too good for them.
