| Jul-18-06 | | BishopofBlunder: <WannaBe: <BishopofBlunder> use the link I posted in the Cafe.> The only link I can find for you in the Cafe is the one for page twenty. I want to know how to get to page 19. Not that I'm not grateful to you for getting me past it, of course. But it's a little like playing solitaire with a deck of 51 cards. |

| Jul-18-06 | | LIFE Master AJ: I know I am late ...
# 1.) Did you ever play another Shredder vs. Rybka game? # 2.) How did you do at the National Open?
|

 | | WannaBe: <BishopofBlunder> You can't 'really' get to page 19, embedded in the HTML code on page 19 is a loop back to page 18.
If you are using Internet Explorer, go to Tools->Internet Option, under the General tab, middle section, the Temporary Internet Files, click on settings, then click on View Files, search for the NINEteen.html. Copy that file, then paste it on your desktop (You can't view the source/edit that file while it's in the temporary folder). After you've pasted it on the desktop, you can open it using Notepad and view the source. The clue in the source is __nineteen__.html If you are using other browser than IE, let me know, and I'll try to find out how to view the temporarily stored internet files. |

 | | WannaBe: <LIFE Master AJ> Yes, After the first draw (with <Dionyseus>) with an earlier version 1.x of Rybka, we played another one, which Shredder lost. I also played 2 games versus <RandomVisitor>, the first game was also a draw and lost the second. Again, the first time was against version 1.x of Rybka, second time was using 2.0 (I believe) Here are the PGNs for the other 3 games:

| Jul-19-06 | | brankat: <WannaBe> I've just completed posting comments/impressions in my forum regarding games vs Shredder. Another thing. I heard a few days ago that, apparently, there was an "invasion" of Blue Whales in Southern Cal., Long Beach area some 2-3 weeks ago. That they assembled there in unusually large numbers and were in some kind of feeding frenzy. Would You happen to know anything about this, is it true? Blue Whales are the largest animals that ever lived on Earth, could reach over a 100 feet in length and weigh up to 160 tons. Only a few years ago they were feared to be at the brink of extinction(just like about everybody else). Now the number is estimated to be at about 1,500. |
|
| Jul-19-06 | | chessmoron: <Shredder vs. Rybka> Although Shredder lost 1-3 against Rybka (Dionyesus/RV combined), how can we see a lost from Shredder at a real tournaments. |

| Jul-19-06 | | YouRang: <WannaBe>, a while back, you posted (in my forum) <WannaBe: <YouRang> Are you pretty good with templates within c++?> I wasn't much help, but recently <jahhaj> posted this: <jahhaj: <templates in C++> I know more about those than I do about chess.> ...which makes me suspect that <jahhaj> is great with templates. Perhaps he would be willing to assist you with templates (if indeed you seek assistance). :-) |
|
| Jul-20-06 | | jahhaj: <C++ templates> Sure, fire away. |
|
Jul-20-06
 | | WannaBe: <jahhaj>
Here is a portion of c++ code:
template <int piw1, int piw2, int pib1> class T32
{
public: static FuncA
some code here....
public: static FuncB
some code here...
}
// end of template
When I see it being called, I see T32<var1, var2, var3>::FuncA I believe, this means, calling FuncA inside of template T32 only with the parameters of var1, var2, and var3. This call does not involve FuncB at all, even though they are both inside the same template. Is my understanding correct? Why would/what are the advantages/disadvantages of programming with template? Is it really better than writing 2 separate functions? or adding an extra variable to decide which section you want the code to execute? Thank you very much. |
|
| Jul-20-06 | | jahhaj: <WannaBe> First to correct one possible wrong impression. Although you say var1, var2, var3, these cannot be variables in this code, they must be compile time constants. Because the template is instantiated by the compiler it must be able to work out the values of var1 etc. at compile time. You are correct in you first question. FuncB is not involved at all, in fact its not even compiled. For instance this is a legal program template <int X> struct T {
static void funcA()
int a[X+1];
static void funcB()
int b[X];
}
; int main()
T<0>::funcA();
(some of this code is screwed up, cg.com does funny things to curly backets, hopefully it is still comprehensible) If writing T<0>::funcA(); meant that T<0>::funcB() was compiled you would get an error (because of the zero length array b), but template members are only compiled if they are used, not when they are declared (this is a simplification, but good enough). I can't say what the advantage might be in this case without seeing more code, but I would guess that it is related to what I said above. The author of that code only wants one of the two functions to be compiled, they are making a choice at compile time which function to use. If you wrote two seperate functions or if you had a variable to decide you would inevitably being making that choice at run time. Hope this helps.
|
|
| Jul-20-06 | | jahhaj: <two seperate functions> I meant two non-template functions. |

 | | WannaBe: <jahhaj> Thank you very much. I just wanted to confirm what I have thought I understood before I proceed with a massive portion of converting C++ code to another language. =) |
|
| Jul-21-06 | | brankat: <WannaBe> I'm curious. What is rule #2? If You can't post it here, You have my e-mail address. I think I have an idea of what it may be, but I'm not sure. And I WAAAAAAANNA be sure! |
|
| Jul-21-06 | | jahhaj: <another language> Let me guess.... Java! Good luck, no other language that I'm aware of has templates like C++. |

# 4.) Nothing in violation of United States law.
PS Someone posted, "You can violate rule #2 in your own forum ..."
obviously, this was a joke. I doubt if CG cares if you "spam" your own forum. <Wannabe> Thanks for the reply. Other than an upset prize, did you win money? Did you gain rating points? (Just curious.) Have a good weekend. |

 | | WannaBe: The whole rule number 2 started out as a joke, <EmperorAtahulapa> was leaving to go to Hungary, and told us to treat his forum as our own. So I promptly posted rule #2 in his forum 3 times. He deletd them, and posted his comment here. So this may have caused some confusion. =) <LIFE Master AJ> No, I did not win any prize money. =( I did gain 200+ points. =) |

| Jul-23-06 | | brankat: <WannaBe> It has been a little over a month now since the Vegas tourney. Do You have any plans for another tournament in the near future? |
|
Jul-23-06
 | | WannaBe: <brankat> STOP PRESSURING ME!!!!! just kidding. I curently have no plan to compete in ANY tournament in california. Besides being United States Chess Federation member, I must be in Southern California Chess Federation member. The money (14 bucks extra a year, but you get 4 issues of 'Rank and File'. Wooooo woooo!!!) is really not that a big deal to me, the idea, however, is ridiculous. <DrDum> and I have had discussion upon this, I like to travel, and we both think to travel to a different state for tournament is a great idea. I currently, or for any near future, do not foresee any tournament in California. Out of state, now, anything goes/open game. =) My current debate is to whether to renewal my membership for just one year, or do a sustaining for 10 years; then it becomes life membership, or just pay the whole sum and get the life membership. |
|
| Jul-23-06 | | brankat: <WannaBe> You certainly enjoyed the whole Vegas experience and would equally enjoy travelling to other states. If You expect to keep on playing Chess, and if You can afford it, then it is usually best to get a long term membership (in this case, lifetime). It is cheaper, plus You don't have to deal with it every year. I believe, the system is quite similar in Canada, I'll have to check it out. |
