 | | WannaBe: <square dance> If your iso burner/maker software doesn't work, we use http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/... for work, it's a free-ware. After you install it, just right click on the ISO's icon, and make the appropriate choice. (I think it's called burn image... or something like that.) Regular CD-R will be fine. I've never had problem with them. |
| Sep-19-06 | | chessmoron: Hey <WannaBe>, did you see the Dodgers vs Padres game yesterday? Amazing! |
Sep-19-06
 | | WannaBe: Didn't see the end, the game went extra innings, and with all the scoring, it was already running long/late into the night. Read about it on-line, (the results was too late to make it into the morning newspaper.) But apparently there was a big fight down at the bar after the game, <DrDum> told me about it. (He was working as manager last night.) Gonna go and see if <DrDum> wants some OTB practice/sparring games. (And probably get my ass kicked...) |
| Sep-20-06 | | square dance: <wannabe> yeah, the iso burner worked! imagine that. ;-) but, and im going to explain this in the most technical way im capable of, i get to a point where it wants me to do some partition thingy and it talks about erasing current os files, etc. im not sure which folder to put it in. got any ideas? |

 | | WannaBe: <square dance> glad the ISO-specific software worked. Now, let me see... partition thingy, can you be a little more specific on that? Are the program asking you to a temporary partition? Where the files are temporarily stored in memory and then later re-written back to the hard drive? (You would still have one recognizable hard drive. C:) I know, that when I do a fresh install, the OS temporarily creates a memory partition, to temporarily store the executable file(s) it needs to complete the install task. Or is the software asking you permission to physically partition your hard drive? (So you would have C:, D:) and your CD/DVD-ROM becomes E: drive, etc? Erasing current OS files, yes, you are going from whatever your XP (home, multi-media, whatever) to Professional, and certain OS file(s) have to be replaced, mostly for security purposes. HOWEVER!!!!!! I must tell you this:
1, Regardless on how old your ISO image is, it WILL NOT contain all the updates Microsoft have released. (They just released 5? new ones recently) So you will have have to go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and get the security patches that your 'new' OS requires. 2, If your copy, is not quite 'genuine', Microsoft will let you obtain the critical security updates, all others will not be allowed. (I've also heard that they will not let you do any Service Pack upgrade too. Last Service Pack for XP was SP 2) 3, Going to get some Zzzzzzzz... Your next post will be answered later this morning. =) |
| Sep-20-06 | | square dance: <wannabe> i guess "partition thingy" was being a little too technical for you. ;-) the problem with erasing my current os files is that the new os is a trial offer that expires in 4 months. |
| Sep-20-06 | | JDK: <square dance> sorry for jumping in but I have a couple of suggestions. Something like partition magic might be what you need, that way you keep the old partition as what you already have and install your new trial OS onto a new partition. Once it is useless to you, you can delete the new partition. The same way that it is possible to have Windows and Linux partitions etc. The only thing that may stop you is hard disk space. |
Sep-20-06
 | | WannaBe: <square dance> According to your last post, I agree with <JDK>. |
| Sep-20-06 | | square dance: <jdk> hey, no problem. i need all the help i can get. :-) thanks btw. |

| Sep-20-06 | | dr.roho: <WannaBe> If you dont mind me asking, what is your occupation? I'm just curious because you're on chessgames a lot during the day time... |

| Sep-20-06 | | Dozy: <dr.roho: <WannaBe> If you dont mind me asking, what is your occupation? I'm just curious because you're on chessgames a lot during the day time...> What's up doc?
While it's apparent that <WannaBe> lives in the USofA, probably California, you have only to read his profile to realise that your question is perhaps just a little bit tactless. When you consider all the injuries he sustained during his childhood it's obvious, even to a furriner like me, that this poor man is unable to work and is receiving a disability pension. It's possible that dragging his broken body to the keyboard is all he can manage to maintain interest in anything at all. So, let's hear it for <WannaBe>, a hero among us -- even though he may well be a pooka, and not a man. (QV: http://www.geocities.com/harveytpoo...) Oh, and BTW, before you ask why I'm here so much in the daytime you've gotta remember that it's already tomorrow in Australia. |

 | | WannaBe: <dr.roho> LOL. Very keene eyes my young friend. My 'day' job is software engineer, and my job is pretty much 'playing' on the computer all day. (Carpel tunnel syndrom coming in the next 5 years...) Take, for example, today, one of my co-worker is at a satellite office, in Northern California, we (the offices) are hooked up via Virtual Private Network (VPN), and he was having problems, so I simply logged into his computer via Remote Desktop, and in a way, 'took over' his computer, and got the problem resolved, so he can continue with his work. I'm on here quite a bit, (as you've and probably others have noticed) that's because the time it takes for my software to re-compile, and re-initiate, before I can conduct any further testing, it's about 5 minutes. I, in the meantime, is reading/answering my e-mails, and/or skimming through the latest kibitz on here. =) I've been accused of 'mind-melding' with my computer, I hardly use my mouse, I tend to use the 'tab' key and hot-key my way around applications. I read one newspaper and 3 web-sites daily (besides this one, I think I 'speed' read. but never been measured.) and I type over 130 words a minute (Hence, I can answer e-mail and make posts here relatively fast), I can handle a lot of problems at work simultaneously, because I've been there for a long time, and knows the systems/programs quite well. And no, I'm not on disability and 'dragging' myself to my computer. =) |
| Sep-21-06 | | dr.roho: <dozy> I could tell <WannaBe> is not seriously disabled because of his pictures of the Las Vegas thing(Unless of course that wasnt him and then Im truely sorry). <wannabe> Where can I learn to type faster because right now I am doing probably 20 a minute(maybe an exageration). I also am a horrible speller yet I am in Honors classes such as English. I tried reading through this humungous(I dont think I spelled that right) dictionary last year and I got up to the C's before I gave up. It was a 2 set and over 4000 pages combined so I dont feel that bad to making it only to the C's... |
| Sep-21-06 | | chessmoron: <dr.roho> If you want to type fast, use a Dvorak keyboard instead of QWERTY keyboards. Dvorak uses letters in the English language on "home keys;" the keys in the middle row of the keyboard. It reduces the distance your fingers travel for most keystrokes, increasing typing speed. |
| Sep-21-06 | | Dozy: <<dr roho>: I also am a horrible speller> There's a trick you can try if you have trouble with spelling. Install a Google toolbar and activate it on your task bar. (Ask me how on my forum if you don't know, or ask <WannaBe> here. Then when you have difficulty spelling something you only need to type <define:antepenultimate> (or whatever you're looking for) in the toolbar and you'll get the correct spelling in a separate window. Failing that ygu colud jsut splel bdaly lkie the rset of us... |

Sep-21-06
 | | WannaBe: Typing: Same as the direction to Carnegie Hall, practice, practice, practice. (If you miss the reference, that's OK. You're a bit young for that one. =) I've found that certain people can do certain thing(s) well, (me, typing and humour!) I can anticipate 'possible' errors and problems with work project(s). Much like chess GMs can anticipate moves/weaknesses in a game. But, I can't apply that to my games for some reason. Even though I know the rules of C/C++/Java/Chess equally well. =( Spelling/grammar: English is probably the toughest language I know (I know Chinese & English). Don't worry (too much) about it. But for school papers, do try your best and run it through spell/grammar checker. When I was in school, we had 'proof-readers'!! And you had to pay them! |
| Sep-21-06 | | NakoSonorense: I just took a speed reading test and read 279 wpm. After that, I took a comprehension test and got 81%. That's supposed to be like the average reader, but I feel that I read way too slowly. wannabe, do you know any good website which can help me increase my reading speed? (I don't care about comprehension, I just wanna read fast, darn it! J/k) |
| Sep-21-06 | | square dance: <Futurama was one of my favourite show on TV. I heard rumours that it's coming back again, (with new episodes!!!) I can't wait for it.> yep. this is definitely happening. it will be on comedy central in 2008. |
Sep-21-06
 | | WannaBe: <NakoSonorense> Go through Bobby Fischer's page (starting from page 1) and do it in 5 min. That will improve your reading comprehension. =) |
Sep-21-06
 | | WannaBe: 2008?!?! I could be dead by then! |
| Sep-21-06 | | JoeWms: <NakoSonorense> Google <speed reading> and get tons of come-ons. Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics was the leading program in the 70's and 80's and may still be going. I took it in the 70's and went from 400 to 1000. It takes some work but, if you stick to the principles, it pays off in the long run. I can't read print anymore, so I'm out of the loop.
I upstaged you, WannaBe. So sue me.
| Sep-21-06 | | NakoSonorense: <Go through Bobby Fischer's page (starting from page 1) and do it in 5 min.> Done that already. That's how I improved from 100 to 279. :) Joe, thanks for the advice. I just did that and found some very nice websites. I just need to find out which one can work for me. |
Sep-21-06
 | | WannaBe: Bobby Fischer: Blitz kills ideas...
WannaBe: Speed reading kills, err... Ummm... |
Sep-21-06
 | | WannaBe: I wonder if anyone can help me with this...
I have digital cable TV (Through Charter communications) at home. And I've been looking into DVRs... 1) Can I just buy an off the shelve DVR and it will work with my cable service? 2) TiVo requires subscription service, do I really need that? Is that true for all DVR services? If I buy http://shop3.outpost.com/product/49... will it work with my current setup? Thanks in adv. |
| Sep-21-06 | | JoeWms: <NakoSonorense> Faster reading leads to greater comprehension. Right now, Nako, you are probably reading one word at a time. You can train yourself to speed-read and comprehend phrases, then sentences. Whole paragraphs, too. Speed and comprehension: you can have them both.
Good luck, friend.
