| Sep-21-06 | | NakoSonorense: Whoa... is it possible to read a whole paragraph just by looking at it? That would be great. I'm going to start a speed-reading program today to see what happens. And thanks for the encouragement, Joe. :) |

| Sep-21-06 | | NakoSonorense: Spell checking tools are cool, but not a good way to learn, I think. It's better to look it up and try to spell the word oneself. When I find new words, I look it up in an English dictionary to see the meaning; then I use my English-Spanish dictionary to translate it so I'll know the equivalent in my first tongue; and if I'm in the mood, I then look it up in a Spanish-only dic. to see if there are other uses for the word... Now, that doesn't guarantee that I'll learn the word, but at least I did something not related to chess... But I guess spell checking tool come in handy when you are in a hurry... or when you don't want to do all the ____ I do. :) |

| Sep-21-06 | | Isolani: <I have digital cable TV> I have a radical plan. I would look in to switching to Directv if you can get it out there. I am actually looking in to getting a DVR myself and it would only cost me a few extra dollars a month since I am a consumer of the product. <1) Can I just buy an off the shelve DVR and it will work with my cable service?2) TiVo requires subscription service, do I really need that? Is that true for all DVR services?> I was informed that the "off the shelf" DVR won't work but I do not know if my source is reliable. |

If my memory is correct, the phrase most often used for "You're Fired" is "tsao yo" which, if you translate it, means cooked (wok-ed) squid. |

| Sep-22-06 | | dr.roho: <positionalgenius><wannabe>Thanks. <wannabe> Good game. Any other move other then the bishep sacrifice would have lead to your lose (If I diddnt screw up the rest of the game). Looking at the board at that time, I went into analysis 15 moves deep and I found that your rook and/or minor piece and/or Queen would have been losed. It was a great game Recently I was in a tournament where we had to play the King's Gambit and I had to play each of my opponents as white and black. Well' this one guy I played was barely higher rated them me(Cant say the same about his age though). The first game he put his knight to far into my territory and I snatched it. Then forked his rook and King and snatched the rook too and finaly We traded queens. Here is the material count: I had a rook and knight over him and he had a few pawn advantage. Well I simply gave the game away when I moved my rook straight into his bishep! Then it got proggresively worse fo me as I blundered again and again.I losed The second game I was up a Knight and I had the game in hand with an open file which I domonated. Then (can you believe it) I blundered again and he not only won back the minor piece but the game. This story(if you read it) shows that blunders can ruin any game, including mine ;(... |

| Sep-23-06 | | blingice: <NakoSonorense: I just took a speed reading test and read 279 wpm. After that, I took a comprehension test and got 81%.> First test that came up under "speed reading test" on Google I got 398 WPM + 82% comprehension. That was my normal reading speed, and my topped-out speaking speed is probably 400 WPM. (NOT TO BRAG [STEROTYPICAL FRENCH LAUGH]) <NakoSonorense: Whoa... is it possible to read a whole paragraph just by looking at it? That would be great. I'm going to start a speed-reading program today to see what happens.> Hmm, I'll present you with some information which you may interpret as you will: Back when I was probably 14 or so, my reading was already at a very fast rate for my age. For some reason, I decided to take a speed reading course. I read a 90 page book in 45 minutes (with minimal comprehension, although I did understand the plot) by basically running my eyes straight down the dead center of the page, probably about an inch width of eye movement. This was to train "clumping" (i.e. seeing three to four words at a time and interpreting them) and perpheral vison. For some reason, after doing that course, my school reading went so slow I felt bad about myself (I would reread and reread paragraphs, sentences, and even single words to understand what the word meant, because I lost the ability to interpret words flowing into my brain at a moderate pace, and sometimes normal novel pages would take me 3 minutes to read). I, for some reason, felt the need that the reading assignment required me to read every single word to actually have been considered "reading" it. This persisted for about a year, and I am finally rid of it, probably due to the fact I am in debate and read massive amounts of articles. So, take that information and evaluate yourself. If you want to learn how to speak faster and enunciate, I would recommend doing several things, all at the same time: taking a page from a book, and read it from the bottom right corner--backwards. So, if you read the previous sentence, you would read it "backwards corner right bottom the from it read and book a from page a taking..." It forces you to pronounce each word. Once you have done that, you can make your speech still clearer by pronouncing "oh" in between each word. So, added on to the same sentence, you would speak "backwards-oh corner-oh right-oh bottom-oh..." etc. (you can also do that with the letter "Q"). Finally, after you have progressed past both of those, take a pen and push it (lengthwise) as far back in your mouth as possible, grasping one end of the pen between your right molars and one end of the pen between your left molars, and speak the same exercise. This exercises perfect tounge movement. Now, after you have done all of this, take the pen out, and read the page forward as fast as you can, enunciating each word. Results... |

| Sep-23-06 | | positionalgenius: <blingice> Last time I was tested(in my sophmore year) I read 700 WPM with 95% accuracy.I'm not boasting or kidding...was <nakosorensense> bragging? |
|
| Sep-23-06 | | blingice: Sickness, <positionalgenius>. I should try another speed reading test, one where I read as fast as I can, rather than my book-reading pace. (No, <Nako> wasn't bragging, I was just playing it off to show that I wasn't bragging...) |
