 | | WannaBe: My Pet Peeves (MPP) for corr. chess...
1) People who takes up days to make a forced move.
2) People who don't resign when it's time to.
3) People who let the game time-out instead of resigning. 4) People who have white, and plays Bc4 and Qf3. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Wannabe> I could add a Peeve that I fell into once, aged about 16, playing in my 1st junior corr competition... It quickly became obvious that most of the other players were semi-beginners or weren't trying too hard. I had a few 10-move wins. Soon, one other guy and I had both scored 100% against everyone else... We had 2 games going, a White and a Black each. One - my Black - was a complete and utter dead draw. So everything hung on the other game, which was pretty sharp. I offered him a draw in the 'drawn' game. He said no, we might as well continue playing it out, since we still had another game going. Sounds reasonable, I thought. Of course I fell into the trap. Paid zero attention to the 'drawn' game, blundered, and lost it. Got so peeved with myself that I stupidly lost the other one too... It was little consolation that (a) my tricky opponent later got an IM title, and (b) the organization running the tourney collapsed around this point, so there weren't no prizes nohow. So much for Fiendish Tricks. Conditional moves can also be lethal. Have you heard about the Corr game that went: White: 1.e4
Black: 1...b6, 2.[any], 2...Bb7
And White replied:
(1...b6), 2.Ba6 Bb7 3.Bxb7 (and wins the Rook as well...) |

| Oct-28-06 | | ganstaman: <1) People who takes up days to make a forced move. > I actually think this can be a smart strategy. They aren't taking the time to think of whether or not to play the forced move, they are looking further into the future. They have time now to think ahead -- why should they let this time go to waste? |
| Oct-28-06 | | NakoSonorense: How's it going, wannabe? What have you been up to?
I watched the last game of the World Series, too. Great pitching by Weaver. The Dodgers shouldn't have let him go. It's also nice to see ex-Angels like Eckstein, Edmonds and Spiezo win another World Series. |

 | | WannaBe: <NakoSonorense> Not much, same ol', same ol'. Gonna play over Thanksgiving weekend at American Open by LAX. Then possibly (80%) going to Chicago next May to meet <you vs yourself> and play in the Chicago Open. =) Other than that, working, drinking, reading, playing corrsp. chess, etc... |

| Oct-29-06 | | Open Defence: funny thing is if I select Win 64 bit OS the dell web site says it creates compatibility issues.... is 64 bit needed to unleash the full power of something like Deep Shredder or Rybka 2.1 ? |
Oct-29-06
 | | WannaBe: <Open Defence> Yes, he'll run and get another system. =) I believe, from what I have read, 64-bit system(s) like Vista that's coming out, may not (be) working with older 32-bit programs. It's kinda like when Win95/98 came out, some of the old DOS-based software will not work. That's as far as I know about 64-bit based systems... I can do some research for ya. |
| Oct-29-06 | | Open Defence: this configuration is vista compatible according to Dell.. but if I select the 64 bit OS option then I have to change a lot of the other hardware too... |
Oct-29-06
 | | WannaBe: Sounds about right, 32-bit designed hardware will not have the 'width' to handle 64-bit information transfer. Which kinda makes me wonder, if Vista will have 32-bit backward compatibility, I'd imagine it will, or else, it will have 2 versions, 32/64 bit. |
Oct-29-06
 | | WannaBe: The easiest comparison that I can think of, is the Panama Canal, I read that they just past a bill to build/enlarge the canal in order to accomodate large(r) ships. That's like a 32-bit hardware not able to handle 64-bits of information coming through. |
| Oct-29-06 | | Open Defence: hmmm so seems safer to go 32 bit then ? you never know with these comps.. over night what ya got becomes obsolete... |
Oct-29-06
 | | WannaBe: I think, here's what I would do, stay with the 32-bit based machine, until you really have the need to go 64. Maybe upgrade in 2008? Or late 2007. |
| Oct-29-06 | | Open Defence: but is 4GB ram going overboard ? or should i be looking for options that increase this number : <800MHz> SDRAM Memory |
Oct-29-06
 | | WannaBe: 4 GB of RAM?! That's a lot, I don't know what's the top/max MHz these RAMs can operate at now-a-days. But I think 800 sounds pretty reasonable. 4 GB will allow you to run quite a bit of stuff all at once. And a massive hashtable for your chess engine. |
| Oct-29-06 | | Open Defence: <1066MHz FSB> and I think this is also pretty good... maybe I can go for only 1GB or maybe 2GB of RAM (I think 1GB should be ok in itself) and can add more RAM later..... |
Oct-29-06
 | | WannaBe: If you really want to things that's computing intensive, 2 GB is probably a good start, then add more if you think you need it. I believe, when I first started playing against <Random Visitor>'s Rybka, he was running it on 2 GB machine. |
| Oct-29-06 | | Open Defence: <Wannabe> any idea what he is running it on these days ? |
