 | | WannaBe: Thank you, everyone, I wish the same to you and your family! |
|
| Jan-01-07 | | JoeWms: <WannaBe> This should be the first 2007 post on your forum. I will save the traditional best wishes for Feb 18th. I do look forward to another year with you: verbal high-fiving, and the usual snide-swiping. You are a good buddy, <WannaBe>, and I look forward to saying something nice again next year. |
|
| Jan-01-07 | | suenteus po 147: <WannaBe> Happy New Year to you! And in case I forget, best of luck to you at the Chicago Open! I wish I could be there. |

 | | WannaBe: I have a serious question, and I would like to hear honest opinions. In the Chicago Open, there is a 70.00 dollars discount if you play in the U1200 section. Or, if you are senior (over 65 yrs of age) and play in the U1500, U1700, U1900, etc. Now, my official published rating will be U1200 (actually, I am ashamed to admit this, it will still be U1000) But I have played in the U1400 section for my last 2 OTB tournaments (+5 -6 =0 combined for the two tournaments). Now, should I play in the U1200 and 1) save some $$ entry fee, and 2) possibly do really well and win some prize $$$?? |
|
| Jan-02-07 | | DrDum: yes, play in the u1200 than after you win it all your rating will skyrocket and you'll never be able to play it again. Or better yet, play a couple of months of club play locally and get your rating up to a more realistic level the end of may is 5 month away plenty of time to make up for that 'lag' between your published and 'real' rating |
|
| Jan-02-07 | | DrDum: If you need help finding local tourneys or finding games to fit your schedule Monday Santa Monica 7-11 pm
Tuesay Alondra Park 7-11 pm
Wed Chess Palace 7-11 pm
Thurs Pasadena ?
Friday La Palma 7-11 pm
Sat Chess palace quad (3 or 4 games; a perfect way to raise you rating) Sunday Chess Palace Amateur Open
only once a month but 4 games

 | | WannaBe: Cuts into my drinking schedule.
Does anyone else have any opinion on my earlier posted question? :-) |
|
| Jan-02-07 | | DrDum: Wow, all those days/options and it STILL cuts into your drinking schedule. You sir are truely a prodigious drinker a commendable trait I might add. |
|
| Jan-02-07 | | brankat: <WannaBe> Doesn't DrDum run a bar? He should be happy that nothing inerferes with Your visits to the watering hole:-) On a more serious note. As I understand it, You're gainfully employed, You don't work for $5.00/hour, You had already planned to enter U1,400 before You even knew about the possibility of saving $70.00. I suggest You follow through with the original plan. You are not into this Chess thing to make a few bucks in prize money, but to learn, progress and have fun! Enroll in U1400, and there is a good chance that next time around Your rating will actually be between 1200-1400. |
|
| Jan-02-07 | | brankat: Btw, can't You drink at work? If not, what kind of a workplace is it? :-) |
|
| Jan-02-07 | | JDK: OK, I've finally awoken from my drunken stupor. Happy easter <WannaBe>. Looks like we are dead equal in the CG I tournament...for the time being anyway :) |
|
| Jan-02-07 | | chesstoplay: Hi WannaBe,
Since the Chicago Open is a 4 day event, did you have a specific meeting day in mind? Dinner Friday or Saturday night, depennding on the rounds starting and ending times, might work. Of course with late rounds, dinner might be pizza at 11 PM. Room rates are currently only $89 a night.
I might call the hotel and see if I can wing a suite with a living room for maybe Saturday night. I would otherwise stay at home for the other nights.
This would give everybody a spot to meet away from the crowd. Does chessgames.com have any T-shirts for sale?
Might be a good idea for them and us???

 | | WannaBe: <chesstoplay> I like to arrive a day early, so <DrDum> and I am arriving Thursday afternoon. Thursday evening dinner sounds like a plan, according to web-site, there is a huge mall right across the street. I'm sure there'd be something like a TGI Friday, or something there relatively inexpensive, and serves alcohol. =) We can possibly meet at the hotel lobby first, then play dodge-the-cars on the street to the mall. |
|
Jan-02-07
 | | WannaBe: Of course, since it's five month away, we can 'see' how many are actually able to make it. Then make plan(s) accordingly. =) |
|
| Jan-02-07 | | Archives: Hey if any of you guys want to shout me and my pal Scrappy Doo some plane tickets over to chicago to participate in your little gathering, then please go ahead! |
|
Jan-02-07
 | | WannaBe: <chesstoplay> If not, since Friday's game 1 is at 7 PM, we can try Friday afternoon/early evening dinner. Get the troops rah-rah'd up for round 1, but, if we do Friday, then probably no alcohol. =( |
|
| Jan-02-07 | | technical draw: Ok . I'm in for Chicago in May. Last time I was in Chicago was 1983. I hope they don't remember me. I'm thinking of playing in the under 1600 group cause right now I'm unrated and my USCF membership is expired. I'm getting ready by playing right now 60 games simul at Queen Alice and am going to bring it up to 100. I've only lost 2 games (both to shropshire!) so I should be ready in May. |
|
| Jan-02-07 | | chesstoplay: I left a message for CG to see if they have or would like to have CG T-shirts. I'd prefer a $ 25.00 polo shirt to a $ 10.00 T-shirt, but I'm not paying airfare to get to Chicago. I suggested that CG shirts might be good for us...
and good for them!!
|
|
Jan-02-07
 | | WannaBe: <technical draw> I'm (gonna) trying to swindle something in our game, or try to find a good way out of my current 'position'. Very happy to hear that you are in for Chicago. Will let you know on possible Thursday dinner/Friday luncheon engagement when time gets near. <chesstoplay> T-shirts will it much easier for us to spot/locate each other. But we might also get mistaken for quintuplets. |
|
| Jan-02-07 | | technical draw: I'll be easy to spot. I'll be the one in handcuffs. |
|
Jan-02-07
 | | WannaBe: How kinky. |
|
| Jan-02-07 | | Robin01: <technical draw>No U1600 in Chicago. Only U/1700 and U1500. |

 | | WannaBe: Another one of the oldies that I just love, I can't find a clip on youtube, besomes some karaoke. So I'll just post the lyrics. On the bank of the river
Stood Runnin' Bear, young Indian brave
On the other side of the river
Stood his lovely Indian maid
Little White Dove was-a her name
Such a lovely sight to see
But their tribes fought with each other
So their love could never be
Runnin' Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love big as the sky
Runnin' Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love that couldn't die
He couldn't swim the raging river
'cause the river was too wide
He couldn't reach Little White Dove
Waiting on the other side
In the moonlight he could see her
Throwing kisses 'cross the waves
Her little heart was beating faster
Waiting there for her brave
Runnin' Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love big as the sky
Runnin' Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love that couldn't die
Runnin' Bear dove in the water
Little White Dove did the same
And they swam out to each other
Through the swirling stream they came
As their hands touched and their lips met
The ragin' river pulled them down
Now they'll always be together
In that happy hunting ground
Runnin' Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love big as the sky
Runnin' Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love that couldn't die
Apologies to Johnny Preston! |
