| Feb-01-07 | | YouRang: <WannaBe, Trudodyr> I don't have playchess myself, so I don't think I can be much help. Generally speaking, an 'exception' is an unexpected error event that suspends processing (invalid memory address, invalid instruction, divide-by-zero, etc.). There are also ways to programmatically raise an exception (which is what I suspect is happening here). Sometimes when an exception occurs, there is a piece of software called an exception handler to 'catch' it. If the exception is not caught, it is just reported as an error and the program crashes. Since you see the "create lobbymanager exception" string in the exe file, then it figures to be a software exception that the playchess developers intended to raise under certain circumstances, and there was no handler to 'catch' it. I think this is a problem to report to the developers of playchess. They should be able to tell you the circumstances that cause the exception to be raised. FYI, looking online, I found a Java language object called <LobbyManager>, which seems to be game oriented. Possibly this is used by playchess.exe, and an error is occurring while trying to create and initialize a LobbyManager object. Link:
http://www.threerings.net/code/vily... I notice that this <LobbyManager> object will raise an exception if it is unable to locate a "configuration property". This *might* suggest that a configuration file on your workstation got corrupted or deleted. Unfortunately, I have no idea where that would be kept. It might be a file within the playchess folders, or in the registry, or ???). Since software developers assume that configuration files won't get corrupted, this might be the type of exception that is left unhandled. Did you notice that I managed to say quite a lot without actually being helpful? I learned this skill the other day when I spent 3 hours on the phone with Microsoft Tech support. |

| Feb-01-07 | | YouRang: Addendum for <Trudodyr>: In my forum, <myschkin> gave the following link for chessbase support. I recommend that you use it to report your problem: http://www.chessbase.com/support/ma... |

| Feb-01-07 | | Trudodyr: <yourang>I think you have hit it on the head. |

| Feb-01-07 | | JoeWms: Just passing by. System Restore cured my illness recently. |

 | | WannaBe: <YouRang> Hey, man, thanks!! Oh, yeah, back home from NoCal. =) |
| Feb-01-07 | | YouRang: You're welcome, although I suspect that when <Trudodyr> said that I <hit it on the head>, he was referring to the remark I made at the end of my post: <...I managed to say quite a lot without actually being helpful>. |
| Feb-01-07 | | positionalgenius: <yourang>He wasn't. Trust me. |
| Feb-01-07 | | YouRang: <positionalgenius> Oh, I was just trying to be wry. (Hmmm, a wry try). :-). I probably should have followed my previous post with a winking smiley [;-)] to avoid confusion. |

 | | WannaBe: <Trudodyr> Going back to our debugging of the problem. In your Playchess folder, there is a sub-folder called Messages, which should have 3 *.inc files and another folder, (mine is called English) does this match your configuration? (I Personally still think it's that Kodak program... Did you get it from Kodak corporate site? Or is it a shareware? I read on a page that shareware are notoriously bad for causing errors like these.) |
| Feb-01-07 | | Trudodyr: <wannabe>The kodak is store-bought;its used to save pictures.
OK the files:
Yes it matches your configuration. |
| Feb-01-07 | | Trudodyr: <wannabe>It doesn't make sense. I completely uninstalled and reinstalled it,and repaired the install. Everything should be there.... |
| Feb-01-07 | | Trudodyr: <wannabe>Whats even worse is that playchess #1 Raffael played today and I didn't see him. Truly sad... |
Feb-02-07
 | | WannaBe: <Trudodyr> I am completely out of ideas... =( Let me sleep on it over night, and see if I can think of any other cases/scenarios that this can happen. |
| Feb-02-07 | | Trudodyr: <Wannabe>Thanks for the help. You took time and tried to figure it out-thats a selfless act. You certainly have my gratitude. |
| Feb-02-07 | | ahmadov: Do you think this is somehow related to you ;)

| Feb-02-07 | | JDK: Mmmm..rabbit pie :-)
My mum had a pet rabbit as a child. One day she came home to find the rabbit hutch empty, and that night her dad made the family rabbit pie...strangely nobody ate it. However, my mum says that she will never cook any pet rabbits from her bad experience..so a positive came out of it. |
| Feb-02-07 | | mojoXX: <Wannabe> Mad props to you for the help you give to the CG members. Go Bruins! |

 | | WannaBe: Eating rabbits?! How cruel!! I've personally never had rabbit meat. |
| Feb-02-07 | | Open Defence: <wannabe> wabbits are extremely tasty hehehehehehe (Elmer Fudd laugh)... in fact I make a Wabbit Stew... |
| Feb-02-07 | | Trudodyr: <Wannabe>In a final act of deperation I uninstalled it all,waited 24 hours and then reinstalled it. No luck. |

 | | WannaBe: <Trudodyr> Silly/stupid question time, I noticed that when I installed the playchess software, it says to reboot the computer. Have you done that yet? If yes, maybe it's time to visit the support and send them a description of your problem. |
| Feb-02-07 | | Trudodyr: <Wannabe>Yep,did it. And yes I already contacted chessbase twice and both times they told me to re-install... |
Feb-02-07
 | | WannaBe: <Trudodyr> I see, I see... =( |
Feb-02-07
 | | WannaBe: Okay,
we have ruled out:
1. Bad download/install, because our file sizes completely matches. But we didn't compare files in the sub-folders... 2. Virus/worm, you did a scan and found nothing.
3. You have (un)(re)installed, many, many times.
I am starting to run out of ideas/options here... |
| Feb-02-07 | | Trudodyr: <Wannabe>Real weird thing is that I'm good with computers so this one really has me stumped. I'm not a programmer or anything but I still know quite a bit about computers. |
