 | | WannaBe: Ran that last GK.com game through Shredder, I missed a mate in 2 at the end... I truly suck, back to doing Monday puzzles... Maybe I'll improve. |
| Oct-20-07 | | brankat: <WannaBe> I just saw Your e-mail. Will mail You back in about 10-15 minutes.
It's now 22:20 PM West coast.
But it's OK. You are welcome here any time.
| Oct-20-07 | | brankat: Done. |
| Oct-20-07 | | Open Defence: dont beat yourself up <Wannabe> ... maybe you need to take a bit of time when thinking about your move... try flipping the board... looking at checks, knight moves etc to catch possibilities otherwise not noticed |
| Oct-21-07 | | brankat: <WannaBe> Got Your mail. Keep me posted. |
| Oct-21-07 | | brankat: <WannaBe> RonB dropped by in his forum today. He's OK, just busy, as You thought. |
| Oct-21-07 | | playground player: Hi, <WannaBe> . I just opened my own forum, starting off with the subject of chess slumps. <JoeWms> tells me you and I have something in common--we're both stuck in one, and trying to find a way to get out. I finally won a game on Pogo last night. I left my usual game plan and went with a Polish Opening, 1.b4, and whipped my opponent but good--and freakin' pogo didn't count it! Aaaah! No credit for a win, no ratings points awarded--no nothin'. So as far as the record is concerned, I still can't win. As Black I've been trying to break out by using a Philidor Countergambit (figuring a lot of opponents won't be used to it). I can't complain about the opening, but I still manage to lose those games in the endgame. It's been my experience in sports that the only way to snap out of a slump is to just keep playing. Not so easy as it sounds! |

 | | WannaBe: Getting pretty ugly outside, it's about twenty minutes to noon here, but outside looks like early evening (dusk). The smoke have blocked out the sun, and it's a very orange outside right now. Few co-workers didn't come in, mostly due to the fire. Another one is currently stuck at the Orange County Airport (John Wayne International) because flight takeoff/landing problem related to the smoke and fire... |
Oct-22-07
 | | WannaBe: According to this article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071022... a jail in Orange County was evacuated. The office here is at the very north tip of Orange County, and I can smell the smoke, and it's blocking out the sun. (my previous post) |
| Oct-22-07 | | JoeWms: I'm guessing your dark sky is coming from the Malibu fire. Our fire is SSE of us. I just took a look: The skies down the coast appear to be clearing up for now. The skies were gray about three hours ago. Be alert, buddy. We need more lerts. If you are forced south, and we are forced north, maybe we can have dinner together in San Clemente. |
Oct-22-07
 | | WannaBe: Cool, we'll keep each other posted/updated, then we'll meet at my buddy John's house in San Clemente. =) |

 | | WannaBe: Show you how busy I was this weekend, I just past 3 yrs on CG.com!! Woo-Woo!! And I forgot to celebrate it on that date. My chess 'skills' have regressed, but my punning and kibitz'n skills have vastly improved. In other news, the state of Lousiana have elected the first ever Indian-American as governor. Bobby Jindal, an Oxford educated, son of Punjabi immigrants. http://www.nasdaq.com/aspxcontent/N... No words from Anand if he plans to run against Arnold Schwartznegger in the next California election. =) |
| Oct-22-07 | | Open Defence: congratulations <Wannabe> |
| Oct-22-07 | | JoeWms: You say your punning and kibitzing skills have improved. Because you're my friend, I'll take your word for that. No big change in the fire's movement. TV said a few hours ago that it jumped a 10-lane freeway. Our nearby Interstate 5 will close at 5 p.m., so if I have to head in your Long Beach direction it would be one helluva long haul up the coast road. The Santa Ana winds and heat (near 90!) ain't helping. I got a couple of calls from friends worried about my breathing. What's to worry about? It is a simple matter of in and out, in and out, in and out: I'll just keep doing that for the rest of my life. Hey, buddy: Gray skies are gonna clear up, put on a happy face. That's good! I'm gonna copyright it. TV news is too ragged for me. I'll get my little radio and stick it in my ear. |
Oct-22-07
 | | WannaBe: <JoeWms> The skys around Long Beach ain't too pretty, ashes falling left and right. This afternoon, the wind was in high-intensity mode, definitely not helping... We have four seasons here in California, the Fire, Drought, Earthquake, and Summer. |
| Oct-22-07 | | NakoSonorense: Heard the fire in Orange County was arson... How can people do this?! Uhmm, the smoke blocks my view of the ocean. :( |
Oct-22-07
 | | WannaBe: <NakoSonorense> Yes, reports have it, that fire was set on both sides of the interstate in Orange County. Some people are just pyromaniacs, some are thrill seekers, and some just like to keep people busy regardless of the consequences. There are many strange/weirdo/psychos out there, and that's not counting me!! |
| Oct-23-07 | | NakoSonorense: <There are many strange/weirdo/psychos out there> So true...
Which reminds me of an old (let's say Chinese) proverb: "Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life" xD |
| Oct-23-07 | | JoeWms: It's a night blue sky, no orange glow. The Santa Ana winds and the heat are resting for the night. Our zut soot air has moved on to Long Beach and Malibu. Twenty miles down the coast, Del Mar has been ordered to evacuate. The fire is headed there from Rancho Santa Fe and Fairbanks Ranch. In these three towns, I think an outhouse would list at a million dollars. Lois is surfing the TV news channels to find out if it is safe to go to sleep. 10:35 p.m.and she's already forgotten about that pesky fire. <NakoSonorense> and <WannaBe>, when a Santa Ana wind blows, she doesn't need help from an arsonist. I hope you guys fare well this night.
Gee, if I had to evacuate, how could I log on to Chessgames? |
| Oct-23-07 | | NakoSonorense: Sleep well, <Joe>. If anything happens, the authorities will make sure to let everyone know that they have to evacuate. Hope they can control the fires before that happens. Wish you the best. |

 | | WannaBe: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071023... good thing they weren't recalling magnetic chess sets, they'd have find that one guy who bought it. |
| Oct-23-07 | | JoeWms: Soot alors! I remember my Colorado days when my car had almost as much snow on it as it now has soot. Newscasters have been announcing that some San Diego residents were allowed to return to their evacuated homes. A very good sign. I heard that 500,000 had to evacuate. The worst is over. But the air quality! It is so bad, it's on a par with ordinary air quality in the world's industrial cities. Tell me more, Al Gore. I've become a believer. Temperature is near 90, humidity down in single digits, and when the Santa Ana winds start up again, our Camelot may well become a tinderbox again. This is my report from the Southern Front, <WannaBe>. How you doing up in Long Beach and Orange County? Have you tamed the wild Malibu yet? Joe Williams from Fire Central. Over.
Oct-23-07
 | | WannaBe: <JoeWms> Hot here, good thing it's dry heat! =) Not much new to report, a co-worker of mine was one of the displaced evacuees... We know he is safe, since he called in, now we just hope his home is OK. Not that much soot/ashes coming down, but air quality is definitely poor. Over-and-out. |
