| Nov-15-07 | | NakoSonorense: Hohohohohoho. Great article.
A few days ago I also read that Santas should lose weight because it was a bad example for the children. |
|
| Nov-15-07 | | Shams: <dabearsrock1010> my 'hawks are gonna finally get the better of you guys this Sunday. |
|
| Nov-15-07 | | whiskeyrebel: all Santa's should be functioning drunks, fat, whiskered and a bit short tempered; in other words, just like me! That's one bad job I've never been desperate enough to take though. |

 | | WannaBe: I am so glad, that people can spend money on research like these: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071116... I wish to thank Drs. Leif Nelson and Joseph Simmons for their hard work, and deep research, into something that has such profound impact on our society, and our lives. More grants are needed to fund further in-depth research like these, not like wasting them on other issues. Based upon their research, I'm going to offically change my name to Samuel Edger Xavier Yu. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: hello <MannBee>!
It's been a long time, so I feel a bit guilty dropping by because you are the person who I actually know here who knows the most about computers. sigh.
If you have time, let me know what you think?
My POS old laptop- I have a cable High speed (supposedly) Internet modem here in Korea. It stopped working so I got my Provdier <TCN company> in here- they gave me a new faster modem, but no go- then the guy tells me the <LAN card> on my PC is <kaput>. So I bought a brand new <Samsung> Laptop with loads of <RAM>. So I'm using the new one, and suddenly I can't get on this site here or my favorite streaming free illegal movie site. So I got out the Old Laptop and fired her up, stuck in the cable and sure enough here it is working again- the <LAN card> was either not broken or is making a "comeback." But it's still slow as hell and I don't know what it is. It's around 10:30 pm Saturday Night here in Korea- so I was thinking maybe the slowdowns and me not being able to get on sites might be due to heavy Internet usage at this particular time by Koreans? Am I going insane?
Sorry to bother you... if you can hazard any guesses I'd appreciate it. Regards,
JFQ |

| Nov-17-07 | | Ragh: <suddenly I can't get on this site here or my favorite streaming free illegal movie site.> Since this is a simple html site, probably you meant to say you can't see the game pages ,coz they contain Java viewer. Download the latest version of JRE (version 1.6.0_03) from http://www.java.com/en/ Sorry to jump in with the partial advice before Mannbee replied. |

 | | WannaBe: <jessicafischerqueen> Not knowing much other details... I have some theories... First, some details/background:
Downloads, legal or otherwise, (and I know nothing, I see nothing, I say nothing!) are often risky, especially on some of these peer-to-peer sites. Virus, worms, and what-nots can spread and infect your system, you mentioned your system is slow, do you have anti-virus/worm/firewall on your system? I don't believe in the Microsoft built-in firewall, I believe in my Linksys DSL/Cable router with NAT. If your PC is not protected with at least anti-virus/worm/spyware, please download one. The Anti-Virus Group have a free version you can use. http://www.grisoft.com/doc/products... Now, as far as the other issues...
You said it stopped working, does this mean you can't visit any sites? And when your computer comes on, does your hard drive light goes nuts? And it stays that way? (If so, your PC is infected. <RonB52734> had similiar problem like this before...) Any/all spyware or mal-ware will eat up your CPU and processing time, this <MAY> prevent you from executing other programs, and block internet connections. With your new laptop, you said you can't get on here, so you are using your old one again? What kind of message gets displayed when you try to access CG with your new PC? Is it the standard windows can not find site page? If so, have you set up your computer's networking properties correctly? I don't know the details of <TCN Company> they may require you to set certain things, most likely, it should be DHCP, and if so, you should not be experiencing <ANY> problems with connection. Let me know if you have other questions, and if you can provide more details, that'd be great. Also, usually those techs with DSL/Cable companies don't know what they are talking about. =) |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: thanks tons <Mannbee>! Yes, both Laptops are protected out the ying yang with strong firewalls, anti-virus and anti-spy programs. I think I figured it out.
It was unusually heavy Cable net traffic at peak hours on Saturday night. Just a few hours later, both PCs ran at normal Net speed (which is pretty freaking fast, I gotta lotta RAM and a fast modem here). The old Laptop is almost dead, but refuses to go down. The LAN card wasn't working, but after a day's "rest" it's working again. I also plugged in the new laptop after "peak hours" and I was able to access the Net sites at normal speed as well. Thanks for your expertise!
I can't believe my old Laptop refuses to die.
Cold weather seems to revive it--
Could that be true, or am I insane? |

| Nov-18-07 | | NakoSonorense: If you wanna see your old laptop die, give it a swift blow with a hammer. After that, not even the < 0 temperatures of Antartica will bring it back to life. |
|
| Nov-18-07 | | whiskeyrebel: My computer gear is so old..at the first meeting of a very serious writing oriented History course taught by the official State Historian, when I cited the make and model number of our p.c. I'd be submitting my research paper with, he and my fellow students doubled over in laughter. I'm using an even older iMac this minute. I'm not proud of either of them, in fact I'll enjoy the day I smash them both into cyber-debris. |

 | | WannaBe: The American Open will take place again, this Thanksgiving weekend. Nov 22-25, with 8 rounds of action as the main event. Side events includes G/10 championship, and scholastics on Saturday. However, this year, I will not be participating, instead I need to do a little house sitting for my mom & sister. (They are going to be out of town) And watch some football! But I still have time to swing over there, and possibly take some pictures of Masters that currently have no picture on their CG.com's page. =) |
|
| Nov-20-07 | | NakoSonorense: Hey wannabe. Got a question for ya.
What's the story behind the Bruin Bear hibernating? They covered it yesterday and I've always wondered why. Is it just becuase of the upcoming came against that other school? |
|
Nov-20-07
 | | WannaBe: <NakoSonorense> Yes, the story is this: One year, bunch of Heroes rented a helicopter, and dumped blue and gold paint on the Tommy Trojan statue. The next year, some vandals from the other school retaliated by doing the same thing. (Or did they do it first, and then we retaliated?? Can't remember exact order of things...) Hence, since then, both statues are covered up weeks before the big game. There is also another story, of how a bunch of Bruins with blow-torch decapitated Tommy Trojan too. There usually are students guarding each school's statue as the big game gets near. There are other 'fun' stuff... Another story is this, USC students used to do card tricks at halftime of their football games. Some genius faked enrollment at USC, and got on their card design student committee, that year, during the big game at the Coliseum, the student section held up their cards, as they as told, and it spelled out "SC SUCKS". They don't do the audience participation card show anymore. Not because of the prank, but because people tend to throw them like frisbees, and injuring others. (C'mon, they're SC, think they are smart?!?! :-)) |
|
| Nov-20-07 | | NakoSonorense: ROFL! Great stories! I didn't know any of them. Thanks for sharing. The card show was great. Using their own students against themselves! |
|
