WannaBe: <Hello <MannBee>, are you enjoying Korean New Year?
heh
I have a computer question.
Ok suppose there's this person.
We'll call here "person X".
Ok she has here laptop on almost 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.>
Not good, especially on a laptop, on a desktop, there are more room/space for air to circulate, on a laptop, things are so tight, it's better to shut off/on between usage. Especially if you don't have virus/mal/spy ware protection, your PC can 'possibly' be hijacked, and be used to sent out spams. (a possibility, albeit, remote... Because I think/remember that we discussed PC protection...)
Funny thing, this was one of the main topic my college professor brought up in one of my computer sci. class; just how close can the circuits gets, before nano-tech reaches its limit...
<And it's been overheating and crashing lately.>
Turn the computer off...:-))
<So I know that an overheating problem can be solved by decreasing the ambient temperature around the computer.>
The other thing to look at, is how many malware/spyware are 'possibly' running, they will take up/all of the processes and cause the CPU to run at 100% for a long(er) time...
<I wish I had a kind of plate thingy that was set at 0 degress to sit my laptop on.>
Move to one of the north/south pole, and leave it outside at a 'cool' -40 F.
<I tried little external fans pointed at my laptop= >
No, the air does/will not circulate into/help a bit...
<I have my laptop raised on four little peg thingies so the air can pass underneath it.>
This may help, provide that the fan is working...
<Now I've opened both my patio doors and turned off my heat in my apartment so there's a pleasant -5 degrees "breeze" wafting over me and my laptop.I'm wearing every article of clothing I have, and am rolled up in six blankets like a sausage.
Do you think "Person X" is crazy?>
Yes, I do.
<I'm going to have here committed soon. Can heat problems wreck operating systems in your computer?>
No, Operating system(s) are installed into your computer, the temperature have nothing to do with the OS. If the fan in your car fails, and your car over-heats, it's quite differnt from if your car runs out of gas. Two different (quite) problems... They might exhibit similiar behavior (not working...) but the underlying problem is quite far apart.
<Or does it always shut down before that happens? >
What OS you running? Is this your old/new computer? XP? Vista??
<If you don't know <person X>, I'd advise not getting to know her.>
Thanks for the adv. warning.....
<jessicafischerqueen: Hi again <MannBee> Ok I got the thing cooled down enough to research on the Net.
Clues? It was shutting down mainly when I was operating someting that uses a lot of CPU- like my chess computer or my cool 3-D Horse Racing game I downloaded.
Or watching streaming video. >
Sounds like CPU over-load... (That's my best guess...)
<So all sites say to open up the lap top and clean the dust off the fan and around the heat sink ports, and then spray it with "Arctic compressed air" product.Obviously I'm too retarded to open up my own laptop.>
I personally do not recommend doing this, not because of any specific reason(s).
I've come across a-many laptops that is so small and compact, just taking them tiny screws out and try to pry apart the covers can cause some damages.
Anything from simple plastic pieces breaking/ripped (no big deal) to soldered wires coming apart.
<I'm a messy person so my Puter is probably just choked with dust.So I'm assuming I can go to a computer shop and pay them to open it up and clean out the crap??
Ok that's my plan as soon as the stores open again.>
Err... That, for now, would be my suggestion, have someone examine your CPU fan, and/or your cooling fan, and see if that is/are the problem. Another thing to keep in mind, is that mal/spy ware do use/take up a <LOT> of your CPU cycles, and/hence, can/will cause your computer to over-load.
<I'll have to do it all in "sign language" of course since I don't speak Korean and not one person in Korea can speak English.Where I live anyway. >
I wish you luck, if there is/any other question(s) that I can answer via long-distance, feel free to ask.
