| May-12-06 | | Open Defence: <Emperor> as an Arsenal fan I once held the same opinion of Van Nistelrooy as you now hold of Drogba LOL!!! great player though especially at penalties .. broke many an Arsenal fan's heart |
| May-12-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: Van Nistelrooy? A diver? Nooooooo... |
| May-12-06 | | Open Defence: <Emperor> I remember last year there was a very controversial game after which some of the Arsenal players whacked him on the head. |
| May-12-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: <Open Defence> Yeah, I remember that too! There was a fight while they were on their way to the changing rooms, right? I don't remember what it was about though. |
| May-12-06 | | Open Defence: < I don't remember what it was about though.> an alleged dive |
| May-12-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: There, you said it, "alleged"! Don't forget that Drogba actually admitted diving! (accidentally) :) |
| May-12-06 | | Open Defence: <Emperor> I used the word "alleged" as it was controversial .. however .. my opinion after seeing many replays of him is that the term "alleged" is a mere formality |

 | | WannaBe: <thegreatzidane> I will do so when I get home. =) |

 | | WannaBe: <thegreatzidane> Never mind, I remember the title of this one... and its unique cover. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/18... No one asked, but I'll post it anyway, the Scotch book is http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/18... And the Najdorf book's link to amazon is posted on <Zebra>'s forum. |
| May-12-06 | | Open Defence: <Wannabe> Gary Lane wrote a nice book "Winning with the Scotch" ... it helped me come up with some nice ideas for the Black side ... maybe we could practice them some time ... |
May-12-06
 | | WannaBe: <Open Defence> Oh, that would be lovely!! |
| May-12-06 | | Open Defence: great .. I will try to post some of the lines from that book so that we can compare notes and see if the opinions differ .. I generally mistrust computers on Opening Analyses as I am not sure if they are relying on their opening book or actually analysing the position |
| May-12-06 | | Zebra: I will follow that with interest as well. I recently decided to take up a new opening as white against ...e5, and had a look at the Scotch. However the main priority was to find a way of avoiding the Petrov, so I settled for the Kings Gambit. |
| May-12-06 | | Open Defence: <avoiding> the Petrov .. maybe you should try the Vienna ? |
| May-12-06 | | Chopin: <Wannabe> I've already made my predictions, but "just to be safe"-- that's what I say to all my girls. FIRST ROUND predictions:
Group A: <Germany>, <Costa Rica>, Poland, Ecuador Group B: <England>, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, <Sweden> Group C: <Argentina>, Côte d'Ivoire, Serbia & Montenegro, <Netherlands> Group D: Mexico, <Iran> Angola, <Portugal> Group E: <Italy>, Ghana, USA, <Czech Republic> Group F: <Brazil>, <Croatia>, Australia, Japan Group G: <France>, <Switzerland>, Korea Republic, Togo Group H: <Spain>, <Ukraine>, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia <offramp> Just to be consistent with your predictions, you should have picked <Saudia Arabia>, <Ghana> and <Trinidad & Tobago> to reach the second round. Actually, I'm just joking-- I agree it's hard to make these predictions, but how could you leave out The Netherlands???????. |

 | | WannaBe: <Chopin> Got it. (again =) |
| May-12-06 | | Isolani: <zebra> The best way to befuddle a Petrov guy is to play 3♘c3. Most of the time that will lead to a Four Knights Game. Jan Pinski wrote a book on that opening years ago which introduces new ideas since the John Nunn edition was released. In addition when you have a grasp of the Four Knights your repertoire grows since you will now also have an alternative to the Scotch. |
| May-13-06 | | Open Defence: <isolani> yes especially since some "sophisticated" players out there think that the Four Knights is a beginners opening .. hehehe |
| May-13-06 | | Zebra: <Isolani> Interesting thoughts, I will check them out. Isn't there a sharp variant in the Four Knights (the Belgrade Gambit??). That would quite appeal to me. |
| May-13-06 | | Zebra: <Open Defence: <avoiding> the Petrov .. maybe you should try the Vienna ?> I used to play the Vienna at school - maybe I'll go back to it one day. At the moment (apart from the Kings Gambit), I am also looking at the Bishops Opening (which of course can easily end up as a Vienna). |
| May-13-06 | | Isolani: <Zebra>
Belgrade Gambit 4 d4 exd4 5♘d5!?
Pinski devotes a chapter in his book to it. It is a popular "club level" variation laden with tricks and complications, to paraphrase the author. |
| May-14-06 | | Zebra: <Isolani>: <Pinski devotes a chapter in his book to it. It is a popular "club level" variation laden with tricks and complications, to paraphrase the author.> That sounds like the kind of thing that might be interesting. I just have to remember not to play it against any grandmasters ;-) |
| May-15-06 | | EmperorAtahualpa: <WannaBe> Sorry, sorry, sorry and a million times more sorry, but I have just changed my mind in the predictions: Could you please change my preference for South Korea to Switzerland?? FIRST ROUND:
Group A: <Germany>, <Costa Rica>, Poland, Ecuador Group B: <England>, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, <Sweden> Group C: Argentina, Côte d'Ivoire, <Serbia & Montenegro>, <Netherlands> Group D: <Mexico>, Iran, Angola, <Portugal> Group E: <Italy>, <Ghana>, USA, Czech Republic Group F: <Brazil>, <Croatia>, Australia, Japan Group G: <France>, <Switzerland>, Korea Republic, Togo Group H: <Spain>, <Ukraine>, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia Sorry again, and thanks a bunch for your trouble. :) |
| May-15-06 | | Zebra: I would also like to switch from Togo to Switzerland, if this is possible. |
May-15-06
 | | WannaBe: <EmperorAtahualpa> & <Zebra> Okay, not a problem. =) |
