| May-15-17 | | User not found: <rogge: Thanks Blunderclap! One thing I never thought I'd write.> Easy Rogge.. This site has a habit of bringing sentences out of people they never thought they'd type.. My personal two strangest, most far out and bizarre, never to be repeated (hopefully, lol) posts are.. "You are <NOT> the father of God!" LOL. And the others about a certain kind of email whatshisface thinks I need to receive daily, unrepeatable in this forum :) |

 | | OhioChessFan: <Thanks Blunderclap! One thing I never thought I'd write...> I agree with <rogge>! One thing I never thought I'd write. In reality, I have a dim view of erasing history like that. It's your site and all, but I really think you're setting a bad precedent. |

 | | Tabanus: <CG> Not very important to me but if you want to include the games from the recently finished Copenhagen Chess Challenge 2017 (6 GMs 10 IMs): http://www.kobenhavnsskakunion.dk/i..., click on "Partier (PGN)" then "Samlet". |

 | | chessgames.com: Thanks, Tab: Copenhagen Chess Challenge (2017). |
|
May-16-17
 | | Tabanus: Thanks CG! I compared with Chess-Results and it seems right for the ones with 8, 6,5 and 6 points. Two players (one of which with only 4 games) on 5,5 points are missing, and 8 players on 5 points missing. Say 20 players in the standings list would conceal this (which I think is typical of many Swiss-es), but perhaps that's a bad idea. |
|

 | | chessgames.com: I filtered out the sub-2200 games; that could be why. |
|
May-16-17
 | | Tabanus: Yes, because it seems that most of the games (around 325, roughly counted) are in the orig. file. So the game quality is better, but not the standings table :) |

 | | Tabanus: <CG> I don't know if possible, but perhaps it would be better if the software could pick the players with say 50% score or more. Just an idea. |

 | | WannaBe: Hello <CG.com> For random(ness) sake, I posted tid=90000, 80000, 70000, etc links on my forum. But I noticed, there are no kibitz'n boxes, except 2nd Euwe. (tid=80000) And some tournament have names but no games. (tid=40000) And one tournament have games, but can't post any kibitz (tid=70000), I think this tournament would be interesting to kibitz on. So, follow up questions, were these tid pre-assigned, and just waiting for games to be filled in? |

 | | chessgames.com: <WannaBe> Fair question, but a little tricky to answer. Let me put it this way. The algorithm for receiving a new PGN game: it looks at the event name and the year. Suppose it says [Event "Chessgames Open"]
[EventDate "2017.05.03"]
The software will then look to see if the tournament name already has an entry with name="Chessgames Open" and year=2017.<*> If it already exists, then the game will be assigned to that tournament. If it doesn't a new record will be created and a new tournament ID is born and this game will be the first to be assigned to that. Everything you noticed about tournaments are a consequence of that method, combined with the fact that admins can modify this data later. For example: <some tournament have names but no games> — they used to have games but either an admin moved those games into a different tournament, or the editors as a whole put it in the Tournament Index for simply a better description of the event. <tournament have games, but can't post any kibitz> — by default, you can't post to a tournament. It requires it to have homepage status and/or Tournament Index inclusion. As new games come into the database all the time this is their default status. <were these tid pre-assigned, and just waiting for games to be filled in?> Not per se; when we first got a tournament for some event we make the record. <*> = <note, the algorithm for detecting tournaments by matching names and years is somewhat sensitive to the possibility of events around Christmas time that span the end of one year and the start of the next. the exact logic is a combination of hacking, heuristics, and elf magic.> |

 | | chessgames.com: We're ready to beta-test our new Stockfish® server. I'm looking for a few volunteers to play around with it. You can also ready see the benefits of the engine on the Opening Explorer and Similar Games, but the real fun will be when you get to suggest moves to games and get evaluations back. It also has a nice feature where it can analyze the end of the game to answer that perennial question, "What's the finish?" We've already hobbled together a help section on the feature here: Premium Membership Help Page. So if you have interest in helping us debug this system, please let me know. We're just looking for a few good men (or ladies). |
|
| May-22-17 | | WinKing: You might want to change <Positive numbers mean that White is winning;>.
I think you mean 'White is better'.
<2. Opening Explorer - For most pages on the Opening Explorer you will see a small icon reading "Engine" with an evaluation next to it. For example, if it says 5.dxc5 +0.41 (30 ply) that means that Stockfish regards 5.dxc5 as the best move, and the evaluation (in pawns) is +0.41, and it probed 30 ply (15 moves) deep in all variations. <Positive numbers mean that White is winning;> negative evaluations mean that Black is better. You can click on the "Engine" button to see a more thorough evaluation of the position.> |

 | | offramp: 1st American Chess Congress (1857)/Alexander Beaufort Meek
The third game in the list says it has 3 moves. In reality it has 26. |
|
May-23-17
 | | chessgames.com: <Offramp> How odd; must have been due to the invalid PGN at the very end. <WinKing> Yes the documentation needs a lot of work, and we've yet to make advertising materials. Right now we're just focused on making it work well. If you (or anybody) would like to play around with it for real, just give the word and I'll put you on the beta-tester list. |
|
May-23-17
 | | offramp: I'm not a big fan of the Stockfish evaluations for openings. If you have an opening like the Fried Liver, Stockfish (this sound so like one of my recipes) will probably give an evaluation of minus 5 after move 6. Many people will throw the whole line into a dustbin without considering the line's practical chances, beauty, history and humour. |
|
May-23-17
 | | chessgames.com: I know exactly what you mean, but that's more of a problem of the way people interpret the evaluations than the evaluations themselves. There are some very useful applications, for example discovering tactical refutations or the proper way to defend a difficult position. |
