 | | chessgames.com: Were we to do this, here's how it would have to work: Each post would have a ♡ icon next to it somewhere; if you click on it, it turns into a ♥ to indicate that you "love" the post. You might have a special page where you can review the posts you love. At the end of each day the post that got the most ♥'s is the "post of the day". <Potential problems:> 1. Multiaccounting abuse to slant the scores encourages people to register multiple accounts for the purpose of gaming the system. 2. Some people will use the feature for with their own personal rules, such as to mark posts they DON'T like, and that will skew the final scoring. 3. Some of the most beloved posters might end up winning the prize nearly every day. A few are so humble they might be embarrassed at being featured so frequently and actually back off from posting. 4. I could easily see a complaint, or a snippy response to a complainer, or some other unkind put-down, elicit so many ♥'s that the "Post of the Day" becomes the "Whinge of the Day." <Potential advantages:> 1. It's fun.
2. The ability to flag posts for later review is simply handy to have—even if we don't reveal the statistics to other users. 3. It might be interesting to read the "most loved post" to a famous game, player, etc. 4. It might encourage more quality posting, if people compete to be the most loved poster, for even a day. We've had this idea for a long time. Maybe one day. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Dear Caissar, no!!! |
|
| Aug-27-17 | | technical draw: I don't like the idea of a "most loved post" or "kibitzer of the day" or evaluating posts. Suppose someone wins, I don't know, like say 8 days in a row? You are sure to get complaints that the system is rigged and that can start a word war. Just my opinion from experience. |

 | | chessgames.com: < I don't like the idea of a "most loved post" > Take heart: we don't either. We've thought about it a lot, and the more you do that, the worse it appears. But note the idea: <The ability to flag posts for later review is simply handy to have—even if we don't reveal the statistics to other users.> We could make it just a personal bookkeeping system that people could use for whatever purpose they want. It would be as if everybody had their own Memorable Quotes chessforum. |

You are sure to get complaints that the system is rigged and that can start a word war. Just my opinion from experience.> Don't let fear dictate your decisions. It's a fun idea with zero negative side. The potential negatives listed thus far are really nothing at all. I mean, if these "negatives" actually weigh on someone, they are far too overly sensitive to be frank. The idea that "complaints" will happens so we can't do "x" is so hard for me to understand. Who gives a damn about the whining complainers? They are complaining now about everything anyways. We have people that complain about the Pun of the Day, for goodness sakes, but we won't stop that, will we? Don't overthink this one. It's fun. Have a good life. |

 | | Tabanus: Hey, I could now hope that someone would actually *love* my correction slip notifications? <CG> The correction slip receiver apparently does not respond to my 'standings table slips'. This includes also the Norwegian Championship (2016), which has all the 11 x 9 = 99 games, with correct game results too. Please add &crosstable=1 |
|
Aug-28-17
 | | chessgames.com: Sorry <Tabanus> — Lee ("Sargon") doesn't have the power to flip leadboards on; he told me that there are a number of slips that he can't do without my help. I'll look into it when I get a chance. Anyhow, don't worry, slips don't "fall through the cracks" ... at least not anymore. |
|
Aug-28-17
 | | Tabanus: <CG> Fair enough. I'm happy with his speed on event names, player names, game results and non TI-incorporated games. Non-processed slips will accumulate at the bottom of my forum header - I put them there so not to forget about them. |

| Aug-28-17 | | technical draw: I sometimes want to write words in Hebrew script, I have a Hebrew keyboard but when I switch I still get a prompt on the left side of the page. Is it possible to get the prompt to the right side when I switch to Hebrew? |

 | | Annie K.: <td> try Alt+Shift. |
|
| Aug-28-17 | | technical draw: <Annie K> שום דבר Maybe because I have a Mac. I'm going to get that flashing prompter on the right side if it's the last thing I do. Thanks <Annie K> |

 | | Domdaniel: I'm not entirely sure that I approve of "love", at least in that sense. In the wise words of <Ohio> ... "No". |
|
Aug-29-17
 | | Domdaniel: Sorry, that should read: "No!!!". |

 | | saffuna: <Sorry, that should read: "No!!!".> Reminds me of the Bo Jackson commercial from way back where he's shown playing different sports while John McEnroe says "Bo knows tennis" and Michael Jordan says "Bo knows basketball." Then Bo's shown playing ice hockey, and Wayne Gretzky comes on. There's a pause, then Gretzky says, "No." |

| Aug-30-17 | | cro777: <chessgames.com> The team of aspiring Indian chess organizers that has successfully run the 'ChessMine open' in Bangalore (India), the strongest rated open tournament in Indian history, believes chess960 is the future of chess: "Rapid and blitz are very exciting formats, but I don’t think they are the 'future of chess'. I think, they are more like the 'present of chess'. In my opinion, we should start moving towards Chess960, just like we started to generate energy with renewable energy sources a while ago." (GM Srinath Narayanan, a co-founder of ChessMine) The ChessMine Rapid and Blitz Tournament took place from August 5-7 with 50+ GMs and IMs, including elite Indian players like Vidit Gujrathi, S.P. Sethuraman and Abhijeet Gupta. |

 | | Eggman: I notice that when I use your advanced search feature to look for a game, The Trompowski is not listed on the drop down box when I go to select the opening. This is surprising because some relatively unorthodox openings like the Budapest Gambit actually are listed. Would it be difficult to add the Trompowski? |
|
Aug-31-17
 | | chessgames.com: <Would it be difficult to add the Trompowski?> I don't think so; it depends on if it has its own ECO code. <the strongest rated open tournament in Indian history, believes chess960 is the future of chess> Unfortunately our PGN viewers do not accommodate that (simply because of castling rules) but we're constantly improving so there's hope yet to include Chess960 in our database. |
|
Aug-31-17
 | | chessgames.com: No, sadly the Tromp is lumped into Queen's Pawn Game (A45). Maybe one day we can have that feature use actual FEN positions instead of ECO codes. |
|
| Aug-31-17 | | cro777: <chessgames.com: We're constantly improving so there's hope yet to include Chess960 in our database> Thank you for that.
GM Narayanan Srinath: "If we start now, then by the time it reaches a crisis point, we will have a viable alternative ready." |

| Aug-31-17 | | AylerKupp: OK, this might be a new one. A couple of weeks ago whenever I entered the <chessgames.com> Home page or whenever I click on the menu bar to go to the home page I get transferred to the bottom of the Home page rather than the top. Weird? I did try looking through all the Help pages and FAQ pages but I couldn't find a command to set up to go to the bottom of the page whenever I got went to the Home page so, needless to say, I couldn't find a command to ensure that I went to the top of the page whenever I went to the Home page. I have an oldish computer running Windows XP and Internet Explorer v.8. I don't have this problem with either Chrome v.49 (the last version that works with XP) or Firefox v.52.3 but I like Explorer v.8 since it doesn't care that I'm using an older version of the "unsafe" Java environment and therefore I can use any Java-based browser I want without having to jump through hoops. Sorry about that since I realize that to you "Java" is a 4-letter word. But I don't think that you use Java on your Home page. Any thoughts or suggestions?
BTW, what's the status of Olga? Your last mention of it was in Apr-08-17. |

| Aug-31-17 | | thegoodanarchist: I have a 7-year-old Macbook pro, running Mac OS X version 10.6.8 Yesterday I was able to view games. Today I am unable to view games. I try to update Java and guess what? Oh, you need 10.7 or higher OS version!!! So now I go to install it, and it's not available. I have to get El Capitan at a minimum, and Sierra is recommended. (And some goofball Apple software engineer needs to start visiting the beach instead of the mountains every time he's ready to name an operating system. Maybe we can get Myrtle or Zuma. But I digress....) Does anyone even care where I am on the freaking bathtub curve? I don't want to sink hours of my life updating my OS when my processor could die next year. Anyway, my point is that I thought you were getting away from Java! Didn't I read on here a few weeks ago (or maybe it was another page, biographer's bistro?) that you were looking forward to not needing Java? So maybe that's true and I just need to update my browsers? But then, you know what that means! Newer browsers aren't supported by my.... drumroll please... my OS! Now I know how <WannaBe> feels every day at his job. |

| Aug-31-17 | | thegoodanarchist: < Willber G: I have been using Chess Viewer Deluxe II today (and since it was released) but now I get the following error message:
*** ERROR: CHESS VIEWER () IS NOT DEFINED ***> OK, It appears that I made an erroneous assumption. I get the same error message, and I <assumed> CHESS VIEWER was referring to Java. I need to stop assuming. And get the solution. |
