Aug-15-18  zanzibar: <Yorkshire Fog> Damn, I coulda swore it was not there yesterday lunch.

Looks like I was wrong about that, apologies.

I do like to be right most times, given a fairly healthy ego, but this time I wanted to be right for all the right reasons.

Still, <sqeeky> met with <Sargon>, and <Sargon> check in on the 13th - all reasons to be optimistic.

(And even <Focus> was mostly behaving himself last night - making me wonder if he's feeling OK? - just kidding!)

Aug-15-18  zanzibar: BTW- I saw some BS about buying <CG> for $10k floating around somewhere. Based on what evaluation? Like pulling a rabbit out of the hat, or a hair out of your ...

The actual worth of websites is very hard to determine without an inside look at the books (and even then, one has to project into the future of the web). But it's no real secret that more accurate estimations, not just made up out of whole cloth, are readily available:

Worth a lot more than $10k, according to cutestat.

saffuna: Yes, I commented on that when <big pawn> said he could probably buy chessgames for $10,000.

So that website values chessgames at $300,000. I'd say that's still on the low side.

I'd still like to know how many paying members the site has.

WannaBe: <offramp: Does anyone else get mixed up with JimNorCal and JohnBarleycorn?>

Not me, I've met <JimNorCal> and played chess with him. =))

<Z> That Live Game was not there yesterday, but came back today. Either that, or we are both imagining things!

Aug-15-18  JimNorCal: Yes, I affirm that JNC and JBc are different people. Anyone in the Palo Alto area on a Friday evening, get in touch! A small group of chess players varied in ratings gets together for G/10 at a local coffee shop.

The Live Game appears to be a sort of cron job. Presumably it runs till end of the game, then stops. Probably Daniel then updated the target game and start time and it would relaunch the next day. When there were no live games that functionality was disabled. In this case no one disabled it so it keeps starting each day, but with the same target game.

Aug-15-18  Tiggler: <saffuna: Yes, I commented on that when <big pawn> said he could probably buy chessgames for $10,000.>

There are people here who would donate $10,000 to stop that happening.

OhioChessFan: A website "worth" twice its yearly income? Those numbers aren't right.

OhioChessFan: I guess they ignored expenses or it's a 100% discount.

saffuna: I think the $427 figure is gross income, without expenses. As you say, that comes to about $150,000.

Hmmm...

<What a chessforum is not: It's not a blog where you are free to discuss anything you like.

<It's not a political soapbox.>

It's not a place where obscenity is tolerated, nor is it to be used for advertising commercial services.

<It's not a place to be used for badmouthing other Chessgames users.>

In short, our normal posting policy applies to chessforums.

It seems there are major violations of this policy in certain sectors of the <CG> universe.

WannaBe: Going back to that Cookie/HTTP/Password question from last week...

https://security.stackexchange.com/...

The password (as it turned out) itself is not stored in the cookie (or within the browser...), but after reading some members' posts, I changed my password using my PC (But not on my phone). And here is where it got interesting.

When I accessed CG.com on my phone I did not have to enter my new password! Weird, isn't it? I changed my password, how come using my phone did not require re-login?

Ah, the cookie stored some magic number or text or combo of both and CG.com server still recognized it!

Now, getting spam email with your password in clear text can be scary, wish I knew more details on how this could come about.

Aug-16-18  Boomie: <WannaBe: When I accessed CG.com on my phone I did not have to enter my new password!>

Just guessing that you didn't log off on the PC before testing the phone.

WannaBe: Okay, here is what I did:

PC & Phone both logged in. (PC is Win7 Pro, using IE; Phone is Android, LG)

PC: Change Password, logged out, see the message that cookie have been cleared.

Phone: Open Browser, access CG.com and it recognizes me as WannaBe. Did not have to enter new password.

Aug-16-18  hoodrobin: Hi <jess>, I am a bit out of mind, I mean out of shape. I like your posts as usual in spite of that.
Aug-16-18  thegoodanarchist: <zanzibar: I forgot all the rules for personal chessforums>

And I suppose you "forgot" that Daniel didn't shut down forums for all of that. It took MAJOR bad mojo for that drastic step.

You care so much about Daniel's legacy and memory that you want to overthrow his tolerance and install your own censorship, in direct contribution to Daniel's personal values, vision, and morals.

And you think it's the <other people> who are out of line?

<It seems there are major violations of this policy in certain sectors of the <CG> universe.>

Hint hint, nudge nudge. You are truly gutless, <zanzibar>.

Aug-16-18  zanzibar: <<wannabe> Another castling PGN problem, O-O vs 0-0 (Cap o vs zero).>

Good eye. The strictly correct PGN must only use O-O, (i.e. letters, not numbers = 0-0).

I use pgn4web, which allows the incorrect PGN, and so the game is fully playable.

I always thought <CG> should have an automated check for legal PGN. Mentioned that a number of times to good old <Daniel>...
