Oct-20-09  suenteus po 147: <chessgames.com> I've been submitting games using the PGN Upload Utility pretty regularly these past few days, and upon review I just submitted a game that has a big error. Pachman-Novotelnov, 1947 should be this player as the black pieces: Nikolay Novotelnov and not "Wilhelm Novotelnov" as I had put in the PGN. I figure catching it now will save having to fix a faulty player page later. Thank you.
Oct-20-09  suenteus po 147: Okay, I came across something else that fits in with my last post: this player, Novoltelnov is the same person as Nikolay Novotelnov which makes the game I just submitted a duplicate.

chessgames.com: As you techies are well aware, Windows 7 is now flooding the stores and we're proud to say that when you load Chessgames on a brand new Windows 7 machine, it works fine, straight out of the box. (Whew!!)

HOWEVER: the first time it runs anything Java related, Windows 7 will give you a barrage of very cryptic questions, along the line of "Do you give jucheck.exe permission to write to your hard drive?" (As it turns out that's just "Java Update Checker" and is quite harmless.) In short, if you get Windows 7, say "yes" to everything Java-related and then Chessgames will work fine.

We also seem to work in the new browser that comes with Windows7 although that will require much more testing to assess.

Phony Benoni: Larsen vs Spassky, 1970 and Fine vs Keres, 1938 are both designated as bein Game of the Day for Jan-13-07. Looking at the kibitzing, I think the former game may actually have been GOTD on Jan-08-07. Can you check on this?

chessgames.com: <Phony Benoni> Your research seems to indicate that you are right, we have no record of a GOTD on 2007-01-08 but we have two GOTDs 2007-01-13.

There is a kind of a problem that occurs once every year or two, where the GOTD is accidentally wrong (perhaps a repeat in the file, or a typo, or whatever) and then an eagle-eye administrator notices the problem after midnight, and quickly changes it. To the end users everything is normal but behind the scenes our database has a broken calendar pattern.

How you figured it out after all these years is beyond me, but thanks for pointing it out anyhow. Perhaps when we publish "The Chessgames.com Book" those data will become very valuable again.

Phony Benoni: <chessgames.com> Thanks for fixing it. I noticed the problem while compiling <Game of the Day> collections and finding two games for Jan-13-07 and none for Jan-08-07.
Oct-25-09  Benzol: <chessgames> What is the "Chessgames.com Book"?

BTW what was the story on the O'Kelly - Ahlbach game?

chessgames.com: <the story on the O'Kelly - Ahlbach game?> I looked everywhere for the name Ahlbach, I don't see any such upload. Send it back to us please.

<The Chessgames Book> Some time ago on these pages there were rumination of a book about the Chessgames site. It would include things like puzzles of the day, games by the World Team, daily chess quotes, etc. Maybe it could even come out annually in an almanac format. An index into which games were used as GOTD (and when) would be a likey feature of such a book, so it's critical to keep that data intact. That's why I brought it up.

Oct-25-09  Manic: Dear chessgames.com,

I appreciate the time and effort you put into this website and I have a suggestion to make. I made a few corrections to the Error Correction Forum a month of so ago, and they have still not been fixed yet. While I do realise you may get a lot of error corrections each day, I recall that the system does not sort the corrections in terms of how old they are.

Is there any possible solution to this problem? Can you perhaps create an account with a chessforum dedicated to error corrections?

Keep up the good work!

The book sounds a fascinating idea. Thanks for the explanation. I'll resubmit the O'Kelly-Ahlbach game.

I would really appreciate it if you guys delete ALL the posts I made today and yesterday on I Hatem.

Looks like I caused trouble again... I need to be banned from this site, no joke. Actually, that would be quite nice.

chessgames.com: <Knight13> We'll look it over. I don't think anybody is mad at you (at least no complaints registered). It's not a very serious page in the first place, so I don't think anybody will mind if some deletions take place there.

<Manic> <I do realise you may get a lot of error corrections each day, I recall that the system does not sort the corrections in terms of how old they are. Is there any possible solution to this problem?> Yes. <Can you perhaps create an account with a chessforum dedicated to error corrections?> We could, but that I fear that would just make things worse. The chaos of the discussion areas is much harder than the admin-area that we get to see. It's not the prettiest part of the site but it gets the job done.

In what way would the ultimate error correction system work? Here's some features off the top of my head:

1. Errors processed first-in-first-out, no exceptions.

2. An email field which REALLY WORKS ... it would send you a report of your correction and what action was taken. Strictly optional, of course. And for security reasons we have to use only verified emails on file with us (otherwise it could be hijacked for harassment or even spamming purposes).

3. A way to correct admin mistakes. For example, it's easy to make the error of deleting the wrong game when there are near-duplicates. Right now we have a backup which is a real pain to get into, and a motto of "be careful!" It's not a bad motto, but technology should save us in the times when we show our human side.

4. A way so that trusted volunteers could tackle some of the problems themselves. Combined with the backup system, this shouldn't be too risky of a proposition. If we had just 20 volunteers willing to track down 4-5 corrections a day we'd have it covered.

Part of the problem is that a large number of "corrections" really are mistaken. In fact some of them are submitted by people who are QUITE confused. From time to time we get one that says "this game must be wrong, the final position is not checkmate." Apparently they never heard of "resignation" or even "time forfeiture." I don't mean to belittle these kind people--they can benefit form our site, and their hearts are in the right place, but they simply shouldn't be helping us make corrections.

Anyhow, if anybody has any ideas of what the "ideal correction system" would look like, we're all ears.

I think you should give it a try -- at least in regard of time control corrections. There is a lot of work to be done, and a couple of trusted volunteers would make your life easier.

Phony Benoni: <1. Errors processed first-in-first-out, no exceptions.>

While this seems the ideal policy, the "No Exceptions" should be relaxed in some circumstances, much as is done now for Game fo the Day corrections or other current events.

But I don't see it as a make-or-break issue. Once the backlog is eliminated and a mechanism put in place for timely maintenance, the exact order of corections won't be a problem.

<2. An email field which REALLY WORKS ... it would send you a report of your correction and what action was taken. Strictly optional, of course. And for security reasons we have to use only verified emails on file with us (otherwise it could be hijacked for harassment or even spamming purposes).>

Definitely. Consistent feedback would give more motivation to continue finding and submitting corrections.

You fellows aren't infallible either?

It's very frustating to keep submitting corrections when nothing ever seems to change. I know I've been affected by the "Oh, why bother" bug often, and that's probably not uncommon. You have some unbelievable historical researchers here who do astounding work. Finding a way in which they could cooperate and more contribute more effectively seems, at the very least, sensible.

One thing I would suggest is some sort of centralized forum where the administrators and volunteers could meet to discuss complicated problems or ask for help in verifying information. Perhaps each particular question could be numbered for easy future reference as information comes in.
