Have a check box to indicate to oneself that he has read a particular message.

This would allow one to quickly find his place to catch up reading a forum.

If this was implemented, it might be good to have a list of forums that one follows (I realize that we have a Buddies List and an editable menu). Also a link to go to the last read message of each followed forum (or perhaps the next message posted if any).

This is an excellent idea that would help greatly during the World games. I would use it as kind of a bookmark.

chessgames.com: <request a clarification, can past engine vs engine games be referred to in BOB III ?> Only if they really are past games that were previously published. For example if you located a Fritz or Rybka game when using the Opening Explorer, it's perfectly OK.

We don't want to see any computer assessments (like +0.85 or -1.05 etc.) in the kibitzing areas; that is simply against the spirit of the competition.

Indeed.

Nov-20-09  laskersteinitz: World Cup! World Cup! World Cup!
Nov-20-09  laskersteinitz: The World Cup is one of the most exciting chess events there is. Here is a link to the pairings for round 1: http://www.fide.com/component/conte...

I remember following the WC in 2005. It was also in Khanty-Mansiysk, and the coverage was basically more than adequate.

Nov-20-09  laskersteinitz: I just checked where the 2007 World Cup was. I had forgotten...Well, it was also in Khanty-Mansiysk.

keypusher: cg.com, hi, I just uploaded a game by the redoubtable Vadim Zvjaginsev against Sergey Volkov from 1998. If you add it to the database I'll put Dvoretsky's annotations in the kibitzing.
Nov-20-09  YouRang: Hi there. I just noticed a little but on the home page where it says:

< <Game of the Day Archive> stores the last year of featured games. (Have an idea for Game of the Day? See our <Pun Submission Page!)> >

The <Pun Submission Page> link simply takes you to the Game of the Day Archive page.

  chessgames.com: <YouRang> Oops! Thanks.

<keypusher> Great, it's here V Zvjaginsev vs S Volkov, 1998. I hope we have the right Sergey Volkov (We assumed GM Sergey Volkov and not IM Sergei Volkov).

  Peligroso Patzer: The following splendid attacking game by Pavel Tregubov seems currently not to be in the CG.com database: Tregubov - Belov (St. Petersburg 2002): 1. e4 e6 2. Nf3 d5 3. exd5 exd5 4. d4 Nf6 5. Be2 Bd6 6. 0-0 0-0 7. Bg5 h6 8. Bf4 Bf5 9. Ne5 g5 10. Bg3 Ne4 11. Nd2 Nxg3 12. fxg3 Bxe5 13. dxe5 Bh7 14. Bd3 Bxd3 15. cxd3 Qe7 16. Rf6 Qxe5 17. Rxh6 Nd7 18.Qh5 Rae8 19. Nf3 Qxb2 20. Rf1 Qg7 21. Nxg5 Re5 22. Rxf7 Rxf7 23. Rh8+ 1-0

My source for this game score is: "The Art of Planning in Chess: Move by Move", by Neil McDonald, Batsford (c)2006, at pp. 18-23.

Nov-22-09  Eyal: <CG> FWI, the official site of the world cup has now the corrected scores of the first round (http://cup2009.fide.com/round.php), including those of the 10 games (out of the 63) which you haven't uploaded yet. It also seems to include the full scores of Efimenko vs G Milos, 2009 and Bacrot vs Nijboer, 2009, which were uploaded in an incomplete state. The new score of A Rodriguez Vila vs Karjakin, 2009, on the other hand, includes a few more moves but still seems to be incomplete...
Nov-22-09  chesstoplay: Hi guys,

Is Yury Shulman missing from "The participants list in World Cup (2009)" of did I miss him? I didn't see his draw from yesterday in the list of games available for viewing.

Thanks!

Nov-22-09  Eyal: <CG> In continuation of my previous post, I see that now, after the additional games have been uploaded, A Rodriguez Vila vs Karjakin, 2009 and Efimenko vs G Milos, 2009 remain as corrupt duplicates, and Bacrot vs Nijboer from the 1st day still has the incomplete score. I've also noticed that Gustafsson vs Inarkiev from the 1st day is missing.

Btw, would it be feasible to correctly classify the tiebreak games, like the ones that are going to be played tomorrow, as rapid/blitz? I believe that such games from previous world cups are all tagged as "classical".

chessgames.com: <Eyal> Bacrot vs Nijboer, 2009 is now online, also Efimenko vs G Milos, 2009 is fine now, but A Rodriguez Vila vs Karjakin, 2009 still looks incomplete to me unless Black has some tactic that I'm missing.

I'm sure you understand that with events of this size it's typical for game fragments or outright mistakes to get released to the public with corrections or more complete games posted afterwards. To make matters worse, the official site said something vague about a technical malfunction during the 1st round.

<chesstoplay> <would it be feasible to correctly classify the tiebreak games, like the ones that are going to be played tomorrow, as rapid/blitz? I believe that such games from previous world cups are all tagged as "classical".> We know about that. The World Cup and other events that feature both classical games and rapid/blitz games are going to have to be dealt with by hand. There are clues (like if the round number says 2.5 at the World Cup you know it's not classical) but it requires familiarity with the event and its format. We are going to run software that can correctly set the World Cup games away from classical when appropriate, and we can test it on this year's World Cup. Then if it works we'll try to apply its logic to the previous World Cups which are currently riddled with misclassifications.

<Is Yury Shulman missing from "The participants list in World Cup (2009)" of did I miss him? I didn't see his draw from yesterday in the list of games available for viewing.> GM Shulman is playing, we have at least these games - World Cup (2009)/Yury Shulman.

Nov-22-09  Eyal: <CG> Thanks for making the corrections - and yeah, I noted myself that even the "updated" score of the Karjakin game looks very incomplete (at least it includes 3 more moves...). The only remaining problems I see with the game scores here compared with the official records are that Gustafsson vs. Inarkiev from the first day of round 1 is missing, and that Filippov vs Ganguly, 2009 has the wrong Filippov again (see <Tabanus>'s earlier comment on this page). Fortunately he lost, so that should take care of the problem for the next rounds:-)
Nov-23-09  Benzol: <chessgames> Would it be possible to upload my last lot of game submissions. I would like to complete the collections of "Modern Chess Miniatures" and "100 Soviet Miniatures" and both start and finish the "2004 Auckland Open" tournament.

Thanks in advance.

:)

Nov-23-09  whatthefat: <chessgames.com>

I just noticed that the drop-down option for 'Mecking' in the player search box on the front page links to some obscure player called Peter Mecking, instead of the player it should link to: Henrique Mecking.

SwitchingQuylthulg: A semi-interesting tidbit of data searching for P. Mecking turns up: he has been mentioned only three times in the history of chessgames.com, and all of them are <whiteshark> complaining the drop-down list links to the wrong player.

  Tabanus: Hi again <cg>,

FM Todor Galunov had no games in the database so I recently submitted J Radulski vs T Galunov, 2006. But now there are also 11 more games on the Todor Galunov page from the 2008 European Individual Championship (Women). These 11 games are by <Tsveta Galunova> (and not Todor Galunov).

chessgames.com: <Tabanus> Thanks, we think it's cleared up now.

<SwitchingQuylthulg> We really need to go over the code that constructs those menus. It used to not have this bug.

Nov-24-09  RonB52734: cg.com: Here's a bug that probably won't keep any of us up nights. If you search Opening Explorer by FEN string, it appears that you cannot flip the board to show the position from Black's point of view. But if you click forward one move and then use the OE "back-up" feature (not your browser's "back" button) you'll be able to flip it. You can also click "back-up" first, followed by the move you just undid, once again you'll be able to flip the board.
