  Domdaniel: <waddayaplay> At the risk of talking this ECO codes ting to death, I'll butt in again.

First, slightly different versions of ECO codes are in circulation. The ones we get here (via your CG link) are not quite as comprehensive as the full system.

Second, I sympathize with your problem: but I think it would lead to many games going into the 'miscellaneous' category if they didn't conform precisely to the normal move order in the opening they 'really' belong to. And there are some fairly common positions that are reached by so many move-orders that none of them is the standard.

Third, the ECO system itself is unbalanced. The Sicilian and King's Indian have a lot of space because they were very popular when the system was developed. Though still popular, both have fallen back. The Catalan by contrast could do with more space.

I used to be quite irritated by a Maroczy Bind position that was reachable via the Sicilian or the English, making normal moves. I played the English at the time, and had a horror of playing e4 in case I wound up in a Sicilian. I take a more relaxed view now: a position is a position, a move is good or bad - so if e4 is the right move I tell myself to ignore the fact that it might technically be a Sicilian.

Which doesn't stop me trying to catch my opponents in transposition traps, of course.

  WannaBe: Just out of curiosity, when is the next GM vs. The World game, and any clue(s) you can tell us who the GM may be?

Please, please, please?!?! =)

  chessgames.com: A lot of these opening discussions get very "heady", it may be worthwhile to look at a concrete example to illustrate exactly what we're talking about.

Consider this position:

click for larger view

We arrived at it in the Opening Explorer via a move order that suggests it's part of the "c5 Nimzo Indian": 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. Qc2 c5 5. dxc5 Bxc5 6. Bf4 O-O 7. Nf3 d5 8. e3 Nc6 9. a3.

However, when you look at the stats you see this:

Queen's Gambit Declined (D37) (285)

Nimzo-Indian, Classical, Pirc Variation (E39) (14)

Nimzo-Indian, Classical, 4...c5 (E38) (3)

The reason why you find it primarily under the Queen's Gambit is because the position is often reached via 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nf3 -- in fact, far more commonly than through the Nimzo Indian. But this is just a historical happenstance--perhaps in the future the c5 Nimzo will have a renaissance and it will be the typical way to get to that diagram.

This was actually one of the motivations for making the Opening Explorer: to be able to classify opening transpositions especially when they "cross books" as in D37 vs E39. (Cases where E39 and E38 are mixed together are far less interesting to chess players.)

We're not suggesting a solution here--just illustrating the problem.

  chessgames.com: <whatthefat: <chessgames.com> Linking to kibitzing in the Battle of the Brains 3 game still seems to be faulty.> We think that's fixed now; let us know if you learn differently.
Jan-14-10  chessmoron: <CG.com> I need all the IP address that I used under my account name via email. So I can track that SOB who stole my netbook.
Jan-14-10  whatthefat: <CG.com>

Thanks.

Jan-15-10  laskersteinitz: I hope that soon you will create a button at the bottom of a kibitzing page that takes a user straight to the latEST kibitzing. Thank you.
Jan-15-10  zanshin: <laskersteinitz: I hope that soon you will create a button at the bottom of a kibitzing page that takes a user straight to the latEST kibitzing. Thank you.>

In the user preferences, you can check the box that says:

<Display newest kibitzes on top (recommended)>

Is that what you want?

Jan-15-10  laskersteinitz: No. I usually check my profile to see if there are any responses to my comments. So I click, and that takes me to my comment, after which I want to jump directly to the latest kibitzing.

  chessgames.com: I see, so the "Later Kibitzing>" link isn't good enough, because perhaps 20 pages have elapsed and you don't feel like reading them all.

A long time ago, where it said "Later Kibitzing" there were two links, a single arrow for moving one page forward, and double arrows to take you all the way to the end. Likewise for going back a page, or back to the end. The problem was, it confused people.

  Annie K.: ...and today, it is simply possible to take a look at the line where it says, for example, "PAGE 322 OF 327", type "327" in the box to the right of where it says "Jump directly to page #" and hit Enter. ;)

<cg.com>, could you please answer what I asked a few pages back about doing something about the various search problems caused by apostrophes? :)

Jan-15-10  nescio: <chessgames.com> I had a look at the live game page where it says that the game Tiviakov-Carlsen will start at 7.00 AM. To save yourself from abuse by disappointed kibitzers I think you should be aware that the games at Wijk aan Zee start at 13.30 local time which is 7.30 AM US Eastern if I counted correctly. I don't think Tiviakov-Carlsaen will be a exception.

  SwitchingQuylthulg: <chessgames.com> Is there any particular reason why all these games -

A Nickel vs The World, 2008

The World vs G Timmerman, 2007

M Umansky vs The World, 2009

Team White vs Team Black, 2009

Team White vs Team Black, 2008

Team White vs Team Black, 2008

Team White vs Team Black, 2008

Team White vs Team Black, 2007

- have messy PGNs with extra spaces after every move (and in some cases before move 1)?

My software isn't the only thing this gives a major headache; several of these games have been assigned PlyCounts of 2 or 4...

Jan-15-10  laskersteinitz: <Annie K.: ...and today, it is simply possible to take a look at the line where it says, for example, "PAGE 322 OF 327", type "327" in the box to the right of where it says "Jump directly to page #" and hit Enter. ;)> Yeah but that requires reaching over to my keyboard and pressing the numbers, and then pressing enter. It would just be easier if I could just click a button and voila!

  Annie K.: <laskersteinitz> Oooh, nitpicking contest, I love those!!! :D

1. Double click the page number of the last page;

2. Right-click and select Copy;

3. Double click the number in the direct jump box;

4. Right-click and select Paste;

5. Click on the "go" button.

OK, so that's 5 whole actions, and now you're exhausted, but no keyboard needed! ;)

Jan-15-10  NakoSonorense: <cg.com> Is there a reason why in the tournament page SPICE Cup (B Group) (2009) appears all by itself at the very bottom, even though the event took place in 2009?
Jan-15-10  chessmoron: <CG> I'm serious. Do you store information like IP addresses in your database when I login to my account?

It would really help me and the police to get my netbook back since now there's technology of snapping pictures of the culprit with webcam (which is built on my stolen netbook)

Jan-15-10  laskersteinitz: Annie K., thanks for the advice, I hadn't thought of that method. Now I can jump to the last page from the uninterrupted comfort of my mouse!
Jan-15-10  whatthefat: <chessmoron>

I assume the villain would have to have logged in to your chessgames.com account though?

Jan-15-10  laskersteinitz: Honestly, on the home page, Corus should be at the top, and the Hastings tournament right below Reggio Emilia. You did remove that extra 's' though on "Congress", which is good.
Jan-15-10  chessmoron: <whatthefat> I had login to my chessgames account on the stolen netbook before and I was wondering <CG> store history of my IP address in 2008 to October 2009.
