Oct-20-10  LIFE Master AJ: Chessgames Challenge: The World vs N Pogonina, 2010

<<<<<Oct-19-10> PZhdanovEthics:> Gone but not forgotten.>

Your team is putting up an excellent fight, and I've managed to compile plenty of information for my files--going to be a great article!>

Here's to a well fought game! >

Has some line been crossed here? I thought he was not allowed to even visit our page ... and see/record our thoughts. (At least, not until the game is over!)

Oct-20-10  hms123: <LMAJ> Uh...I believe that's meant as a joke from someone (no, not I) who is legitimately on the team.
Oct-20-10  LIFE Master AJ: If it was a joke - I DON'T see the humor in it!
Oct-20-10  achieve: It's the "pull your leg" humour, and obviously evidenced by this result the child(ren) have succeeded. Just let it go ;)
Oct-20-10  hms123: <LMAJ> I didn't say that I thought it was funny--only that it was intended to be. <achieve's> advice is on point.
Oct-20-10  rogge: Hahaha, funny. I'll have to sign up again if that's the kind of kibitzing going on.

This User: peteru is a legit kibitzer on the team, of course.

Oct-20-10  LIFE Master AJ: Hmm. Well, I hope CG will look into it anyway.

This team had enough garbage earlier, we need no more of that kind of nonsense.

chessgames.com: Regarding user "PZhdanovEthics" LMAJ asks
<Has some line been crossed here?>

Yes, the specific line crossed is visible on our registration page to new users <Do not pick a name which imitates a famous living chess player, or is easily confused with another Chessgames member.>

For this reason the account will be closed. We don't know who is behind the account but we're quite sure it's not Peter Zhdanov.

chessgames.com: <hms123: <chessgames.com> I think the number of extensions needs to be updated (from 3 to 2) in the CG Challenge with WGM Pogonina.> You are right; sorry, we hadn't noticed. We also fixed her countdown timer to extend to October 25th.

<Also, could you post at the game page after you hear from her officially confirming that she is taking an extension? thanks--hms> Well, according to the rules she's not required to do anything special to take an extension other than not moving on time. There have been times when a GM explains why an extension is taken and we are always happy to pass that info along to the World Team (as long as it has nothing to do with the actual game!) but this time we haven't heard from her.

We apologize very much for this, but the problem is now corrected, and please be assured that at no time was any confidential information compromised.

Oct-20-10  YouRang: Thanks for fixing the CG Challenge page, but I see that it now (on Oct 20) says:

<Voting closes 6 days from now, at 14:00 (EST)>

We last moved on Oct 17, so her move was due on th 18th. With a 7 day extension, she should move by Monday, the 25th.

Isn't that <5> days form now?

Oct-20-10  hms123: <YouRang> Well, you beat me to it. I think I am slowing down in my old age.

chessgames.com: < We last moved on Oct 17, so her move was due on th 18th. With a 7 day extension, she should move by Monday, the 25th.> We tend to get that number wrong in one direction or another. Anyhow, as we fumble to get the display correct, you are right that Monday is the due date.

Stonehenge: <CG> Can you please merge Roedl, Ludwig Roedl and Dr. Ludwig Rodl. I know you have other things to do, but this is just too ugly :) His name was Dr. Ludwig Rödl.

chessgames.com: Sure, some 40+ games stranded in Roedl, good to get them home where they belong.

Stonehenge: Thanks, I see that there are two duplicates:

Bogoljubov-Rodl 1-0, 1931
Rodl-Samisch, 1/2-1/2 1936.

It would be more precise to name him Roedl if you don't want to use the ö, the Germans do it that way, but I see you also use Samisch instead of Saemisch (Sämisch).

Oct-25-10  ughaibu: According to this: http://al20102007.narod.ru/it/1975/... Tal beat Lengyel, so L Lengyel vs Tal, 1975 is correct and Tal vs L Lengyel, 1975 can be deleted.

Stonehenge: Sigh, sorry to bother you again but can you please merge Alan Phillips (his proper name) with Alan Philips. I was uploading some games from 1950 when I discovered they were already in the DB under the (wrong) name Alan Philips. Threefold sigh :(

Annie K.: <cg.com> Another player page fix request: please change Jeno Papp to Jeno Pap (with just one 'p').

Thing is that a player named Jeno Papp (correctly spelled Jenő Papp, but never mind the accents) actually existed, but he was born in 1900, while the two games in the database here, under the above player's name (from 1890 and 1896, both against Charousek), were both played by the earlier Jenő, Pap Jenő, who was first Charousek's chess mentor and later training partner.

Oct-25-10  ARem: Does chessgames.com disclose the percentage of white's victories across its whole database? I tried to search for that, but the engine says "too many matches".

This might be the closest thing we have to an answer to the existence of black's handicap.

Oct-25-10  dakgootje: it does give approximate numbers though.

white: 211k [37.2%]
draw : 202k [35.8%]
black: 154k [27.2%]

A total of 567k games on about 569k for the total database. The remaining 2k won't matter that much. They will be spread quite evenly - and even if that was not the case, it'd be at most a few tenths of a percent [2k/569k =0.35%]

Oct-25-10  ARem: Whoa! That's a full 10% more victories for white. This is a big deal.

Phony Benoni: <ARem> chessgames.com maintains a page of database statistics that might answer that question: ChessGames.com Statistics Page
