| Nov-01-10 | | technical draw: I have been having problems loading the board on the games lately. I have the java viewer and sometimes the board doesn't load and sometimes I just get a question mark (?). Do you know of any problems? The first time it cleared up by itself. |

| Nov-01-10 | | LIFE Master AJ: <TD> Go here, (http://www.java.com/en/download/inc...); and try that. If that does not work, you may have to remove java, then RE-install it. |
|
| Nov-01-10 | | technical draw: Thanks <AJ>. I have a Mac. But it's working again. It comes and goes. I will try the remove and re-install trick if it fails again. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <td> I have the same issue. In kibtizings, sometimes a half board will load, etc. I attribute it to my being on dialup and have no problems when using high speed at work or the library. |
|
| Nov-01-10 | | technical draw: <OCF> Thing is it only started a couple of days ago. Sometimes I'll get just the square of the board with a ? in the middle and no moves. Or sometimes a strangely colored board with no pieces. I once switched options to pgn only and I got the pgn (of course with no board). Then when I switched back it worked. I must have been crazy when I invented the computer. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Yes, but Al Gore thanks you for facilitating his invention of the internet. |
|
| Nov-01-10 | | technical draw: Yeah, Al Gore. I don't like people who say they invented things that they did not. That's why I quit inventing things after I invented Chessgames.com. |

 | | chessgames.com: <I can imagine that Cg.com might be the judge and jury, but I think that the accused has the right to defend.> We agree, and moreover we would like to believe that the culprit was simply confused and not actually attempted to perpetrate sabotage. Perhaps they thought that the Sticky was their private note-pad, populated by other people's entries, that they were free to clean-up and modify for their own purposes. To eliminate this possibility in the future, deleting Sticky entries could come with a very dramatic "Are you sure?" type screen. This would make life a little less convenient for the Sticky users but it would avoid any chance of accidental mishaps. |

 | | chessgames.com: <technical draw> We have two Macs in our office, one g5 and one Intel-based Mac. We've seen problems of the sort you describe but they always seem to work themselves out, usually with the new version of Safari. (Reinstalling Java on the Mac should--in principle--not be necessary but it can be done manually and on at least one occasion seemed to be helpful.) One thign you can do to try to isolate the nature of the problem is switch Java viewers. If it turned out that this problem only happened with Chess Viewer Deluxe but never happened with MyChess it would tell us a lot about the nature of the problem. Another question that springs to mind is this: suppose you get the "?" error and you then refresh the page. Is it possible that it works for the second attempt? If that's the nature of this problem, it could be a network error on your end. In other words, your network grabs one half of the PGN viewer, and when it tries to execute this chopped up software you get an error. Finally, as a measure of last resort, you can always switch to the "pgn4web" viewer, which doesn't use Java at all (it is 100% JavaScript.) It's not a permanent solution but if you are craving the daily puzzle and nothing else seems to work, it's a viable workaround. |

| Nov-02-10 | | technical draw: <chessgames.com> Thank you for that info. Whatever the problem was it has cleared up. I tried a few things like switching viewers (I was using chess viewer deluxe) but that didn't work so I switched to "none (text only)" so I could follow the moves. When I switched back to viewer deluxe it started working ok. I guess refreshing, re-initialysing and/or re-installing are things that have to be done periodically to keep things moving. Thanks for your help. |

| Nov-03-10 | | who: Is there a way to edit a post without having to delete it and then repost it. I'm not sure if it's a bad idea because people may edit after the next person responds, but maybe it's worth it. |

| Nov-03-10 | | twinlark: Hi ceegee
I find that when I enclose a link in square brackets in a bio, that the link doesn't work properly unless there's a gap between the text and the square brackets. I'm not sure whether this is worth fixing or if you use a work around with admin instructions, but I thought I'd give you a heads up. |

 | | chessgames.com: <twinlark> That bug has been here for years, one of these days we'll track it down. <who> <Is there a way to edit a post without having to delete it and then repost it.> No, partially because it's not clear how much chaos would be created by people saying one thing then later (after being flamed for what they said) changing their post to something innocent. Of course most of the time people probably just want to tidy up typos and so forth, but no, there is no way to do that. <technical draw: Are we having a Clues contest this year? Set them up I'm ready to defend my crown.> Yes we are, and many devious clues are currently being worked on. |

<who> <Is there a way to edit a post without having to delete it and then repost it.> I spend a little time (obviously not very much since I am here all the time) at another site that does allow limited editing of posts. I think you have about an hour to do any editing (much like your <delete> function) and then that's it. Also, it has a counter that lets the reader know how many times a given post has been edited. That forum is much smaller than this site, so it may be that the logistics of it here would be overwhelming. The other site also time/date stamps each post--again, I realize that this might be overwhelming in this larger context. One more thing: can I have a new car? Blue is my favorite color. ;-) |
|
| Nov-04-10 | | crawfb5: Well, I was going to give it some more time, but as long as Howard's getting a car, this doesn't seem like much to ask. :-) Thanks for processing the last game missing from the 7th American Chess Congress (Game Collection: St. Louis 1904). Now it's time to move on to the 8th Congress at Atlantic City 1921. A couple of weeks ago I submitted a batch of Atlantic City games in an email with 28 PGNs (there would be a 3-4 duplicates of what's already in the database) in an attached file. Was that format ok? Frank Marshall vs Janowski, 1921 seems to be recent, but the header info is slightly different from what I sent, so I think that was someone else's submission. |

| Nov-04-10 | | dakgootje: <Yes we are, and many devious clues are currently being worked on.> In addition to the normal completely random release-times of the clues - I think it would be absolutely brilliant to release a couple of VERY EASY clues around... well a little before noon UTC so that would be, perhaps, 6 am for east USA.. Pretty please? |

This very fine photograph of Vladas Ivanovich Mikenas is copyright free on GOOGLE WIKIPEDIA COMMONS, so why not stick it on his Player Profile? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped... |

 | | chessgames.com: <JFQ> Thanks, we've been looking for a decent picture of Mikenas for some time. <hms123> We know that some of our forum conventions are a bit unusual, but they've served us well for so long we are loathe to change them. Sort of like the rules of chess ;) On the subject of timestamps, we decided long ago to not use them for privacy reasons. <crawfb5> <A couple of weeks ago I submitted a batch of Atlantic City games in an email with 28 PGNs (there would be a 3-4 duplicates of what's already in the database) in an attached file. Was that format ok?> That's odd--I see a bunch of games from St. Louis a few weeks ago, which were processed fine, but nothing from Atlantic City. Can you send the games again? |

 | | Stonehenge: <Oct-26-10 Blunderdome: Unive forum please & thanks.> <Oct-31-10 Stonehenge: <CG> You can get the PGN from the Unive tournament here:> http://www.univechess.nl/toernooi-2... Please? |
|
| Nov-05-10 | | achieve: <Stonehenge> Bit sad in a way, isn't it? I know your posting history in this respect/on this subject. Though admittedly CG has at several times responded swiftly to requests of mine, and who knows to how many others', but one of the reasons I haven't renewed my membership "promptly" is because of the disappointment with the laksity with which some of the queries here at this page have been/are treated at times. At least that is my perception. Most promising Youngster following Carlsen, ie Giri, and a world champ candidate like Shirov one would think might automatically result in a <Univé> discussion page and PGN re/delay. To be honest if it's reasonable for me to want to know if and when the admins are overstretched, and, if they are, they'd just say so. Remove any hint of doubt and speculation on our side. Otherwise this is just something I need to get used to? |
