chessgames.com: OK, the issue with playground player chessforum is a lot less black-and-white than we at first assumed.

First of all, there is a kind of double standard when it comes to religious opinions. Let me explain:

Strange as it sounds, the Bible itself does not wholly conform to Chessgames posting policies. A person can selectively quote scripture with the effect of offending women, blacks, jews, "heathens", and of course homosexuals.

And yet, we don't think we're going out on a limb to regard the Bible as the most important book in human history. That's not an endorsement of any religion, just an opinion based on the events that transpired on this planet during the past 2000 years. As such, the Bible is something of which all educated people should be familiar.

Therein lies the peculiar dilemma. On one hand, a person can selectively quote scripture and be quite offensive to various groups. On the other hand, it would be Orwellian to the extreme if it was our policy to ban the Bible on Chessgames.

Now <playground player> did not quote scripture per se, but his opinions are clearly derived from the Bible and I imagine he would be proud to say so. What seems to be specifically offensive to some is a certain play on words stemming from Bible terminology.

From what we can tell, playground player confined his postings on this subject to his chessforum and perhaps a few other chessforums. That's not to say that makes it permissible, for our rules specifically say <[A chessforum is] not a blog where you are free to discuss anything you like. It's not a political soapbox.> However, it's far better than he confines his opinions to his chessforum than on the Kibitzer's Cafe or some random player page.

Ironically, those who were offended by his words have now disseminated it to other parts of the website where they are receiving far more attention than if nothing was said about it.

Nothing above answers the question of what to do, it's just a a statement of facts as we see them. No posts have been deleted (not by us, anyhow) at this time.

Mr. Freeman will contact playground player by email and hopefully we can come to a peaceable resolution. In the meantime we would ask those who have strong opinions on this subject to not spam various threads with complaints.

Domdaniel: <the Bible itself does not wholly conform to Chessgames posting policies.>

So change the Bible. Can't be *that* difficult, can it? It's been done hundreds of times before.

Dec-23-10  twinlark: Hi ceegee!

Have you thought about putting together a <History of the Women's World Championship>?

And in the long term - probably the very long term - maybe the other championships, eg. Junior (U20), Girls (U20), Seniors, Youth (by age), FischerRandom, Rapid and Blindfold?

One advantage of following the age championship would be picking up the early games of future stars.

Maybe the broader group might not be worth the return for the effort, but the Women's title would be useful and interesting.

Merry Christmas, guys, you're still the best.

chessgames.com: History of the Women's World Championship sounds like a great idea, as well as Juniors, and Correspondence. But first we'd like to tie the unofficial World Championships into the system to include Morphy-Andersson, Staunton-Saint Amant, etc.

I should have known you'd have the right answer.

Dec-24-10  crawfb5: I was going to wait until the last clue was posted and solved, but as the last clue seems to be stuck in the ice and snow somewhere, here it is. I started it the other day in honor of <Domdaniel's> writing about waiting for new clues, so I decided to add some verses.

MISTER DANIEL FREEMAN
Hey, Mister Daniel Freeman, won't you post a clue for me

I'm not sleepy and there is no site I'd rather be

Hey, Mister Daniel Freeman, won't you post a clue for me

In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come a-googling you

Though I know that evenin’s prize has disappeared in the wind

Right before I hit “send”

Left me blindly here to amend but still not sleeping

My weariness amazes me, I’m branded on my feet

I have no one to meet

And the ancient empty fora are too dead for posting

Hey, Mister Daniel Freeman, won't you post a clue for me

I'm not sleepy and there is no site I'd rather be

Hey, Mister Daniel Freeman, won't you post a clue for me

In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come a-googling you

Take me on a flight on your magic surfing site

My senses are alight, this new idea just might

Be the one that's right

I'm ready to search anywhere, anywhere you bade

I have my cyber-spade, cast your ambiguous clue you made

I promise to dig into it

Hey, Mister Daniel Freeman, won't you post a clue for me

I'm not sleepy and there is no site I'd rather be

Hey, Mister Daniel Freeman, won't you post a clue for me

In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come a-googling you

Though you might hear laughin’, spinnin’, swingin’ madly across the site

It’s not aimed at any tyke, it’s just escapin’ on the byte

And but for the sky there are no fences facin’

And if you hear vague traces of skippin’ reels of rhyme

To your misleading clues in time, it’s just a ragged clown behind

I wouldn’t pay it any mind

It’s just a herring you’re seein’ that he’s chasing

Hey, Mister Daniel Freeman, won't you post a clue for me

I'm not sleepy and there is no site I'd rather be

Hey, Mister Daniel Freeman, won't you post a clue for me

In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come a-googling you

Then take me disappearin’ through the smoke rings of my mind

Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the forlorn games

The haunted, frightened names, out beyond Wiki's reach

Far from the twisted beseech of the craziness and sorrow

Yes, to dance beneath the gift banner while shouting “great”

Followed by those too late, circled by the jealous fans

With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the posts

Let me forget about today's clues tomorrow

Hey, Mister Daniel Freeman, won't you post a clue for me

I'm not sleepy and there is no site I'd rather be

Hey, Mister Daniel Freeman, won't you post a clue for me

In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come a-googling you

OhioChessFan: Merry Christmas Chessgames. Here's my present to you: An answer to a question posed to you over 2 years ago. Don't ask how I stumbled across it.

<August 22, 2008 ravel5184: When you look at a player's profile and see a comment on <Team White vs. Team Black, 2008>, more often than not it leads me to page numbers such as 187 or 179 which do not exist yet.>

<Chessgames.com: We can't replicate that error. Can you show us a specific link which isn't working?>

Here's what ravel is talking about. Suppose I am on Team White, and ravel is on Team Black. And then he goes to my profile, and clicks on a link to my last post on the Team game, which happens to be the last post made on my team's page. If Team White has more pages of Kibbutzing, say 210 vs. 200 for Team Black, the link will take him to Team Black's kibbutzing (of course by virtue of being assigned to Team Black, he can only access the game page from their point of view) page 210 .....which doesn't exist! I guess it's no great secret that both sides of team games use that information gathering technique to get an idea how much analysis the other side is doing. That is, they find a prominent analyst, notice that they've posted on say May 1, click the link, and see what page number pops up, and compare that to their own team's number of analysis pages on May 1. Hope that's clear.

Dec-25-10  Ulhumbrus: <chessgames.com> Your website appears not to include the game Donner- Damjanovic, Cienfuegos 1972, a game in which, according to Gligoric, white won brilliantly.

Phony Benoni: <chessgames.com> The game T Hampton vs R Wormald, 1868 appears in all indexes as having <0> moves, although there are 40 moves in the score.

In the PGN, the final move "40." is given as "4 0." Would that account for the problem?

chessgames.com: <Ohio> Yes that is clear, thanks. Ideally the system would utterly hide the page count for team games, but that's asking for a bit much. These forums weren't designed with that degree of security in mind.

<Phony> Yes that is exactly why it showed up as "zero moves". It is a little bit surprising the game would come up at all.

casaschi: If you are using the Google Chrome browser you might find this extension interesting: chess games viewer.

The chess games viewer extension for the Google Chrome browser provides an interactive chessboard showing chess games from links to *.PGN URLs and from PGN text, using context menus and page actions.
