Stonehenge: Carlsen vs Nakamura, 2011 and Nakamura vs Anand, 2011.

It still says <Uncommon Opening> here.

Jan-25-11  Eyal: While we're on the subject, there's also one game from the recent London tournament that was broadcast live and mistakenly left as "Uncommon Opening" - Anand vs McShane, 2010.

Phony Benoni: The player Einar Have cannot be searched by last name. His first name is searchable. Some sort of stoplist problem?
Jan-25-11  Lennonfan: <noteagym> i only usually come on here on my phone and the link you put above to<TWIC PGN>meant i was able to download all the games from that tournament, when usually if i try download games from this site in PGN format only half the games i try download succesfully,so if you could put any similar links on here for me to view and download games id be very grateful...im computer illiterate,so much appreciated..... <lennonfan>

Clearly a case of to Have and Have not.

Hemmingway. Or the Hawkes film with Bogart and Bacall.

Jan-26-11  Caissanist: <CG> May I suggest the following QOTD from Dick Cavett (taken from his recent Amazon.com review of "Endgame: Bobby Fischer's Remarkable Rise and Fall"):

<I asked [Fischer] what, in chess, corresponded to the thrill in another sort of event; like, say, hitting a homer in baseball. He said it was the moment when you “break the other guy’s ego.” There was a shocked murmur from the audience and the quote went around the world.>>

Domdaniel: < and the quote went around the world.> And top Russian scientists went to work on *unbreakable ego baby food*. Having perfected it, they decided it was too good to waste on mere chessplayers, though Kasparov had a shot or two. Boris Yeltsin ate nothing else for ten years. And just look at Putin.
Jan-27-11  Open Defence: I thought Kasparov fell into the cauldron as a baby and the magic potion brewed by Druid Botvinnik had a permanent effect on him

WannaBe: No, no, no, no, that was an evil spell casted by Prof. Snape!!

Domdaniel: - No, Professor, the beautiful Neena was really Fat Hank from next door in disguise! He'd done distance learning college diplomas at night, studying obesity management, applied transvestism, girl psychology, and chess.

- Ah, chess. That's what let him down. Was it a Scholar's mate? A Fool's Mate?

- Worse. He forgot to change his name to Polgar. Even Pogo woulda been fine. But when he entered the 161st North Rutlandshire Ladies Open as Neena Hankarova we called the ambassador.

- Who turned out to be Snape in diplomat drag ...

- Yes, that's when it began to get complicated ...

kingscrusher: Gibraltar Masters is currently on. WGM Natalia Pogonina is playing in it, along with some super-GMs like Short, Ivanchuk, etc.

http://www.gibraltarchesscongress.c...

Maybe it might be worth adding it to the newest tournaments list.

Best wishes

Domdaniel: I hope players #52 and #53 in Gibraltar Challengers 'A' are paired together -- it'll be a Rough Savage game.

Domdaniel: Nigel Short was amusing today, about playing the White side of a Ragozin. He's taken to switching between 1.d4 and 1.e4.

"Ambidextrous?" said Simon Williams.
"Bisexual", replied Nige.

Jan-28-11  crawfb5: Based on discussions with <Phony Benoni> and <TheFocus>, it seems clear that H Price and Hubert Ernest Price are the same player.

Jan-29-11  Billy Vaughan: Chessgames, Anand's opponent today is listed as a separate "Giri", not "Anish Giri".

Peligroso Patzer: First, let me say this is a wonderful site. It is the homepage for both my desktop and my laptop.

Nevertheless, I must note with a tone of frustration that you seem to have an increasing problem with duplicate copies of games getting into the database and corrupting your crosstables. The standings at Tata Steel (2011) currently have the game Grischuk vs E L'Ami, 2011 counted twice. [Those standings also have a unique (or at least different and unusual) problem, namely that Anish Giri's draw today is reflected separately under the name "Giri", whereas his other results in this event are under "Anish Giri".]

Other pages with this problem (redundant inclusion of particular games) include: Tata Steel (Group B) (2011) and Reggio Emilia (2010). This problem used to occur rarely, but in recent months it has become ubiquitous. You really should try to solve it.

chessgames.com: Usually with these big tournaments the PGN we get is accurate and doesn't require revisions, however Tata Steel has been in the habit of sending out one batch of PGN then changing it in the next batch. In one case they changed it then changed it back again.

When they send us a game that's a different version of a game we already have, the software has no way to know it's really the same game and certainly no way to know which version is the superior of the two. So it appears twice.

The only thing for us to do is to monitor the pages daily and look for duplicates then merge them, which we do.

If you want to help you can submit a correction form, although in the case of Tata Steel we are well aware of what's going on and such notices won't really accelerate the problem. The one thing you should not do is post at the game page "This is a duplicate", because then your comment will be merged into the proper game page when we apply the fix and will only serve to confuse people later.
