 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Like <Fred> there, I can see big problems even with a simple line such as 'only the nonsense'. Even you and I have been known to engage in silliness. Erudite, but silly. It's bound to be nonsense to *somebody*. I have reason to suspect that every word I write is nonsense to somebody. Then there are posts in languages other than English. I rather like them - I might even learn something occasionally - but others would go "what nonsense". And so on.
And so on. Tabanus is absolutely right to say that biogs need work. I'd considered volunteering my own modestly considerable editing skills. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Dom>- the adminstrators adiminstrate. They've done it for years. All I suggest- is that if we see something we think is inappropriate or damaging to a Player Page or a Game Page, we blow the whistle with an explanation. We are encouraged to use this feature.
Using the feature has no down side.
Why?
Because at the end of the day, all decisions about any post are up to the administrators. I'm not sure why you bring up specific issues such as "posts in other languages"? All specific instances of "nonsense" or "off topic" posts are up to the administrators to decide. The administrators already gave their position on non-English posts during the "Great Barangay War of 1885," if you recall. Point is- the vast majority of members will not make "silly" or "nuisance" whistle blows. If anything, the whistle blowing function is under used- massively under used in the case of Player and Game pages, in my opinion- which is why I support <Tabanus> with my very specific suggestion. This is not a Blog. It's an administered website.
Like <Tabanus> I am sick to death of reading off-topic ranting, attacks, and so forth on Player and Game pages. As for the personal forums, that's a different matter "in practice" as we all know- unofficially, we are given a lot of license in the forums. Like <Deffi> says, "we have it good here." That's precisely one of the main reasons we should be making sure off-topic nonsense, and specifically <off-topic personal attacks,> don't spread on the Player and Game pages. Encouraging people to blow the whistle on this kind of post on the Player and Game pages- that is the extent of my suggestion. Let the administrators decide what is off topic "nonsense". That is the rule we all live under at this website.
We all willingly agree to these terms. They are written on every page. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Yes, in principle. In practice, "Yes, but..." Rather a lot of buts, in fact. Maybe that's just me.
For instance, 'nonsense' - like legal definitions of obscenity etc - may (one thinks) be easy to recognize, though hard to define. People will have many different interpretations. Some extremely subtle comments on games (I don't mean my own, btw) look like nonsense to the untrained eye. While (to me, anyway) a kibitz like, say, "white shoulda played e6 LOL" really *is* nonsense -- as in, it's redundant if the e6 move has been previously noted in kibitzing or in commentary, as tends to be the case. It's also borderline offensive: LOL used this way has nothing to do with humor. Or humour. Endless squabbles? And who is to police and adjudicate? A mega-warehouse full of highly-trained CG operatives, all with the finely nuanced OS Freeman 11.2 downloaded to their cortexes? Hyperbolics aside, it *would* take a lot of person-hours. Forums are another issue. A set of conventions for acceptable behavior has evolved. Do you take issue with the parallel evolution of a few player pages (Rogoff, Fischer, etc) as 'containment zones' for debate and argument? I solve this by not going to those places, much. I can understand why you might wish that the Fischer pages, in particular, were more chess-centric. But RJF was always a magnet for controversy, and remains one. I have one other point. The database itself, despite historical gaps and ongoing errors (eg incorrect ECO codes or player ratings) is actually quite *good* now. Needs work, but getting there. The 2200-base (with exceptions) rule works pretty well. It has created a good middle-of-the-road multipurpose db, with pretty useful functionality. It isn't full of games between 1100 players (as '365' is) but isn't as exclusive as NicBase. Good balance, meaning that the stats are gradually getting more reliable. In short, I don't think anything is really *broke* right now. The recent apparent slowdown in admin activity is a temporary blip, one hopes. But I just can't see how current resources would permit a reconstruction job on the scale you seem to suggest. On the advice of my nonsensical lawyers, <Nash, De Brutell and Short> I'll continue this debate in forum space. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Tabanus> I'm sorry but your email apparently fell through the cracks. Of course you can be a player biographic editor; please read your email for detailed instructions. |

If memory serves me, I think we are due for another "centaur" battle. As far as the next GM challenge, we are exploring two options right now. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Annie K> <I've done a number of audio files of player names recently to help <Jess> with her YouTube projects> Sounds fascinating. Go ahead and email a few of them to us for review and if we are ready to implement the feature we'll ask for the rest. |

| Feb-14-11 | | TheFocus: <Regarding some of the many photos <tab> and <Graham> have posted on the player pages- I'm not sure on the details but I think CG.com needs to know a given photo is in the public domain or not before they can add the photo on to the Player Page? At any rate, I also enthusiastically support the idea of adding <tabanus> to the list of "biography editors" on the playing pages, to add to <benzol>, <twinlark>, <phony benoni>.> If you are interested, you could also become an editor for Wikipedia. I recently did and have been able to make corrections on several player's pages. But only make the corrections if you have sources to back it up. Some people put things on that are not true. |

 | | Tabanus: <chessgames> Wow, thank you for the reply mail! :) Perhaps some air is out of the balloon as regards bio writing right now, but that may well change. Anyway, expect my payment for premium membership soon. NB my critic regarding the monitoring still stands. Well I don't expect you to reveal any secrets - and can only hope you will be able to put some resources to it. I have had the honour of having a few of my own posts deleted by you (deservedly so) and don't think it would hurt anyone too much (especially if the post is years old). Here I think a normal grown up person (equipped with your instructions) could do miracles in only a few months. |

| Feb-14-11 | | Lennonfan: <CHESSGAMES.COM> I refer to your above post regarding me <LENNONFAN>and me violating rule #3....firstly i apologise to you and the administrators, and your site only..And after all the whistle blowing by the usual suspects over petty, ridiculous non chess related matters then i understand fully that your busy enough dealing with these other peoples complaints and why you haven't replied to my email..its probably because of these people that keep you so busy that you cannot keep focused on chess itself all the time, which after all is what we're all here for...either way i enjoy and learn from this site, and would like to congratulate you,but would just like to make one thing clear...i wont post anything about a certain user's private activity on this site (on that you have my word)but i only wished to prove something i realise i cannot do on a chess forum, and as you instructed to me its for the courts to decide and not a forum for gossip,be it true or not...i apologise....thanks you and all the best <lennonfan> |

 | | OhioChessFan: I wonder if you accept suggestions for the Christmas Hunt? |
|
| Feb-17-11 | | SirChrislov: Dear Chessgames,
You are missing about 18 Philidor games.(there are 68 known to have been played by him)
I will submit them on the PGN upload utility soon.
I'm taking these from Philidor's own 'Analyse du jeu des d'Echecs', 2009 edition by Sam Sloan, which I'm holding in my hands right now. |
|
| Feb-17-11 | | SirChrislov: CG,
some of the Philidor games are piece odd/piece and move odd games, have you purposely excluded these? if so, I won't bother submitting them. pls let me know. |

|
| Feb-17-11 | | vonKrolock: I was in the playing area and started a game vs the comp - then after four moves my conexion crashed, and then when i turned back, it's said i'm already logged in, and should wait 60 sec to try again, then the procedure is repeated a few times and again the same result ... |

 | | OhioChessFan: I realize there are always going to be real life demands, but in reviewing this forum, I see a total of 2 days in the month of February, the 11th and 14th, where you appeared. Your only other posting in February was on the Kibitzer's Cafe on the 2nd. This is not acceptable. I don't think the membership expects you to read every post made on this site, but surely you can do better than the current absentee oversight. |
|
Feb-18-11
 | | OhioChessFan: Maybe my point would be better made by saying "I don't think the membership expects you to read <and reply to> every post made on this site..." I am aware there's much work done behind the scenes, but a public appearance once in a while shouldn't be too much to expect. |
|
Feb-18-11
 | | chessgames.com: <SirChrislov> We'd love to have the Philidor games, but odds games require a special PGN header. The easiest way to learn how to do it is to look up a game with similar odds and use that as a template. <Ohio> We're sorry we haven't had a very large presence lately on this forum; we'll try to do better. |
