| Mar-01-12 | | crawfb5: <Actually there is one other problem with the Rogoff page, that being that GM Rogoff is not a trivial player, and it's a shame that he's the one grandmaster who has virtually no discussion about chess on his page. Perhaps one day we can give GM Rogoff a real page that he so very much deserves, but for the time being we don't want to do away with our "lightning rod" (as twinlark calls it).> I am also one who is happy the page is available, if for no other reason that most of the political rants are sequestered there and I can spend my time elsewhere. Might I suggest you dummy up a player account to be the "new" Rogoff page and move all the political kibitzing there? <Thomas Paine> might be a good candidate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas...). Influential in the American Revolution for writing <Common Sense> and <The American Crisis>, Paine was a lifelong political malcontent. |

 | | FSR: <twinlark: ... The second query is that in filling out the same fields for some players, especially historical players, the menu is inadequate to describe the countries in which they originated and sometimes lived. A good example is Wilhelm Steinitz who was born in the Kingdom of Bohemia which was within the Austrian Empire (and not Austria proper - think Britain vis a vis the British empire), but which later became part of Czechoslovakia and lately, the Czech Republic.> Moreover, in 1883 Steinitz immigrated to the United States, becoming an American citizen in 1888, and changed his first name to "William." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhel... Then there's the American-Icelandic Robert James Fischer; the American-English George Hatfeild Gossip (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George...); the English-Irish-Canadian William Henry Kraus Pollock (sic - should be "Krause," not "Kraus" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willia...); the Polish-Argentinian Miguel Najdorf; the Russian-Austrian-Polish-French Savielly Tartakower; innumerable players who were born in the Soviet Union or one of the countries that succeeded it, then moved someplace else; etc., etc. |

<Penguincw> <Two things: How often is the "Hot Games" feature updated?> If you must know, it refreshes at 11:39am, 3:39pm, and 11:39pm (EST). It might deserve to be recomputed a few extra times. <Also, just like we have a Pun Submission Page, is it possible to include a submission page for puzzles?> Not a bad idea, perhaps we could have a contest like we did with the Pun Contest last year. | | Fusilli: <twinlark> That is actually my case. I am a US lawful permanent resident, but my player page says "citizen of the United States". (Incidentally, I plan to become a citizen later this year.) More generally, the legal status of immigrant players, in whichever country they are, is usually not public information (and none of our business anyway), so using "resident" might be more appropriate than "citizen". Where the information might be relevant is in the case of GMs who might need to be citizens of their adoptive country in order to represent that country (eligibility to represent a country varies by country, though), but that can always be clarified in the bio section. |

 | | Fusilli: About the Rogoff page, I agree that a lighning rod is needed, but it is also true that it would be nice to have a page for poor GM Rogoff for real. A couple of times I meant to post something about him, but gave up knowing that it would be buried under a pile of political posts. There is always a risk that *any* Rogoff page turns into what his has become. This is because of who he is. I think the page began to become what it is today after someone posted something about seeing Rogoff on TV commenting on the economy. A relevant post about Rogoff turned into an invitation for never-ending economic debate, which then turned political, social, religious, environmental, evolutionary... |

 | | Domdaniel: <re twinlark's excellent points> Nationality/Federation is likely to get even more complex and difficult in the near future, as I think <frogbert> has already observed. FIDE already levy a fee of several hundred dollars/euros to 'register' a change of federation -- and neither ordinary players nor their federations are willing to pay. So a French or Bosnian player who has actually lived in Canada for 20 years simply doesn't bother to change federation. As for the historical side, a small minority of bio writers seem to want to score political points with anachronistic national affiliations -- eg, stating that 19th century players 'came from' 20th century political entities (such as the Czech republic). I think it should be possible to say something like 'X was born in Z, then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, now in Slovakia'. We can leave particular details to be thrashed out in the bistro. Eh, isn't 'bistro' French for 'too much, twice'? |

| Mar-03-12 | | King Death: < Annie K.: <cg> I would advise leaving the Rogoff page alone. Every online community eventually develops a need for that sort of debate outlet, for those who enjoy such discussions - and a single page, not really used for anything else, conveniently out of the way of anybody of different temperament and/or here for other purposes, is pretty much the ideal solution. I'd say, allow that page to run with the minimal moderation necessary, and otherwise let it be. :)> This seems like a fine way of doing things. There will always be folks that try to push the envelope, that's life, but a safety valve is a good thing to have. Maybe there's no perfect solution but I think that this is worth trying. |

| Mar-03-12 | | King Death: < Domdaniel:...FIDE already levy a fee of several hundred dollars/euros to 'register' a change of federation -- and neither ordinary players nor their federations are willing to pay...> Is this another creation of Ilyumzhinov or Campomanes? Not long ago they jacked up their rating fees per game if I remember right. <...As for the historical side, a small minority of bio writers seem to want to score political points with anachronistic national affiliations -- eg, stating that 19th century players 'came from' 20th century political entities (such as the Czech republic). I think it should be possible to say something like 'X was born in Z, then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, now in Slovakia'.> This makes more sense without ruffling somebody's feathers and playing out a charade of revisionist history. If Old So and So was born in Kinshasa in 1937 the world won't end if the biographer states that he was born in what was then known as the Belgian Congo. |

 | | Fusilli: I was trying to do some searches to get a count on the number of short draws (setting the number of moves to no more than 20) by top players, but something is wrong. For example, when I specify the player as "Petrosian, Tigran Vartanovich", I get many games that are not Petrosian's (not even the other GM Petrosian!) and are from years after his death. Am I doing something wrong? |
|
| Mar-04-12 | | hms123: <Fusilli> I used the drop down menu to choose <Petrosian> and search for games under 20 moves. I got this page: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... with the last game (of 379 total) in 1983. |
|
Mar-04-12
 | | Fusilli: <hms123> Thanks! I am still curious to know if searches of players not on the dropdown menu would always be flawed... even when you specify the full name of the individual to avoid confusions. |
|
| Mar-04-12 | | hms123: <Fusilli> There is a glitch it seems. If you just type in Petrosian (without specifying the number of moves) then you get a disambiguation page: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... <Your search on the name PETROSIAN returned the following player listings: Player name (rating) # games years
Tigran L Petrosian (2649) 347 1994-2012
Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian (2645) 1948 1942-2012 Arshak B Petrosian (2510) 226 1970-1999
Davit G Petrosian (2504) 73 2001-2011
Suren Petrosian (2408) 18 1980-2007
Tigran A Petrosian (2383) 12 2001-2004
Karen Petrosian (2350) 6 1993-1996> but if you type in Petrosian and do specify the number of moves then you don't get the disambiguation page and get this instead: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... The problem is that other Petrosians are included up through 2011. |
|
Mar-04-12
 | | Fusilli: <hms123>
At least you are getting all Petrosians. If I specify the number of moves and I try to avoid confusions by typing the player as Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian, I get this: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches.... If you jump to the last page you'll see plenty of games that are not Petrosian at all... because now we get games played by other Tigrans, for example. Putting "Petrosian, Tigran Vartanovich" in quotes does not help (I checked). |
