Tabanus: <cg> I just finished a short bio on Ludvig Collijn but don't know if the English language is good enough. Anyway I found this good (IMO) picture of him:

http://media1.vgregion.se/vastarvet...

It's taken in 1928 and is on a museum website for public use.

Now I wonder 1) how to submit pictures, and 2) what is your policy regarding pictures - is too many slowing the database, or who do you prefer being pictured.

By the way, perhaps you are aware and perhaps not important but I noticed in the bio section that if I put a link in square brackets [] there has to be a space between the link and the last bracket, else the link won't work.

Tabanus: <cg> That was quick :) And don't worry I'll submit too many pictures, anyway I'll probably soon run out of gas again.
Mar-26-12  benjinathan: Hey <Tab> the last sentence from the Colljin bio seems a bit off-

<The games from this event have been preserved, he then played 1.d4 and Scandinavian (1.e4 d5).>

I assume you meant "not preserved" since there are only 2 games in the db. Not sure what you meant by the bit after the comma.

Tabanus: <benji> Hmm? I meant that the games from the 1897 tournament are preserved (as such, not in cg), and that Collijn in that tournament exclusively played <1.d4> and 1.e4 <d5>. Please rephrase it to better English if you like. Or can. Btw we should probably rather discuss this in the bio-bistro.
Mar-26-12  benjinathan: <Tab> sorry to get involved- I did not even know there was a bio bistro.

This is slightly clearer:

The games from this event, where Collijn exclusively played <1.d4> and 1.e4 <d5> (Scandanavian), have been preserved.

Domdaniel: <CG> - <Stage three we use the Caxton database that has far more nuanced distinctions, to make a more precise analysis. Caxton almost never changes the ECO (in principle it shouldn't do that ever) but it often changes the name to something more specific.>

Caxton is very good at dealing with an impossible task: a clear and consistent classification of all openings.

In practice, some dubious decisions get made, and the database has many games that would be better served with a different ECO code and classification. It's often a transposition problem.

For example, many games starting 1.Nf3 are classified as Reti, or Zukertort, or King's Indian Attack -- when they are none of these, and clearly transpose into something like a Catalan or QGD Tarrasch.

The database is good with names for very specific lines (eg French, Winawer, Armenian) but has trouble when a tabia is reached via an unusual move-order. I recently had a game that began as a QP Game or Colle System, but transposed into a known position from the Tarrasch French on move 12.

When irregular openings lead to positions from mainstream lines, I prefer to classify them as mainstream: so 1.Nc3 d5 2.d4 e6 3.e4 is a French, though it passed through the Dunst Opening and the Veresov en route. Anyone researching 1.Nc3 can still find it via Opening Explorer, and see that it can lead to a Veresov or French: but the French classification should get priority, IMO, as it allows a more detailed sub-classification (Winawer, Steinitz, etc).

There's no easy solution. Best we can do, maybe, is chip away at the ones that are obviously wrong, and debate the borderline cases.

chessgames.com: <Tabanus: <cg> I just finished a short bio on Ludvig Collijn but don't know if the English language is good enough.> Great and thank you! English competency is a requirement for biographers around here but if it's not squeaky-clean I don't worry, the good folks at the Bistro will make fine-tuning adjustments if necessary.

<I found this good (IMO) picture of him ... It's taken in 1928 and is on a museum website for public use.>

For a picture like that (very old and readily available to the public) we are inclined to assume that it's public domain material. And you're right, it looks great!

<Now I wonder 1) how to submit pictures>

Email them to chess@chessgames.com, but if it's just a link that you found online then you don't need to send the file, just send the link.

Please note that we do not just download anything our members find online to put on our site. That's neither legal, or moral. Our photograph collection should be a combination of public domain material, photos donated to us by members who took them, and photos that we specifically asked permission to use.

With photos from the 20s, 30s, etc. we have a good feel for what's in the public domain and what might not be. Plus all of the old USSR photos are now copyright free. But with modern photo's it is critical that we can contact the photographer or organization that holds the rights to it.

<2) what is your policy regarding pictures - is too many slowing the database>

We hate photos, because players who don't have photos have nice profitable advertisements filling up the exact same screen space.

Just joking. We love photos, and if every player rated over 2400 could have a photo that would be incredible. And no, they don't slow the database or the server, so bring 'em on!

<who do you prefer being pictured.>

Attractive women!

Just joking again. The rule is: the more important the player, the more important the photo.

We're aware of the transposition situations, and often work to straighten them out.

The Caxton software, FYI, is something we developed in-house based on Eric Schiller's database. So when it works he can have the credit and when it fails we can take the blame :)

Actually, the Caxton software has the power to fix all of these problems, if it could just be fed with the right data to chew on.

What we basically need is a list of FEN codes which make up an opening like the Catalan or Tarrasch. Dr. Schiller supplied us with such data, but they were incomplete. Not that it was his fault: things like that are always incomplete.

What happens is that it steps through the game backwards, looking at each positions saying "is this in the Caxton database?" Move 20, move 19, move 18, marching towards move #1. Finally it gets a hit, and then it's done--it knows the opening. Whatever happened before that position is irrelevant.

But suppose a Tarrasch Defense starts in an odd move order, say 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4, we better hope that some position later in the game is the one that Caxton calls the Tarrasch. And since the Tarrasch defense comes in more flavors than Baskin Robbins, that's not easy to do.

Tabanus: <cg> Thanks, very clear! Before running out of gas I'll try to stick to old Scandinavians, which is probably where I can contribute most.
Mar-26-12  crawfb5: <CG> Regarding photos, may we assume older photos (say, pre-1920) at a site like the Cleveland Public Library are public domain? A search for <chess> (http://cplorg.cdmhost.com/cdm/searc...) brings up some photos for players currently without any photo on their player page:

John Finan Barry -- http://cplorg.cdmhost.com/cdm/singl...

Leopold Hoffer -- http://cplorg.cdmhost.com/cdm/singl...

Antonius Van Der Linde -- http://cplorg.cdmhost.com/cdm/singl...

Emil Schallopp -- http://cplorg.cdmhost.com/cdm/singl...

Mary Rudge -- http://cplorg.cdmhost.com/cdm/singl...

William Henry Kraus Pollock -- http://cplorg.cdmhost.com/cdm/singl...

John Lindsay McCutcheon -- http://cplorg.cdmhost.com/cdm/singl...

Isaac Leopold Rice -- http://cplorg.cdmhost.com/cdm/singl...

They also have a photo of George Henry Mackenzie (http://cplorg.cdmhost.com/cdm/singl...) which I, for one, would prefer to the illustration now on his page.

There is also a better photo of Georg Marco (http://cplorg.cdmhost.com/cdm/singl...).

I did not see much to suggest from a quick search at the Library of Congress photo section. Another possible source might be Wikipedia biographies.

Mar-26-12  twinlark: Also Google images?

<ceegee>:

<plimko> mentioned at Wang Yue that the Chinese Championship is starting tomorrow and supplied the following links: http://www.chinaqiyuan.com/ and http://biker60.wordpress.com/2012/0....

I think this also means the Women's championship is being held at about the same time. BTW, Yifan will be playing in the men's event.

Mar-26-12  twinlark: <crawfb5>

You're onto a good thing there. Just for fun, I checked the National Library of Australia and found nothing. Not a sausage, but then Australia is backwards chessically. But in checking the Library of Congress we get some beauties (photos I mean):

Carl Medinus: http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query...

Sidney Johnston: http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query...

A 1915 photo of Capablanca: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/he...

Lasker: http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query... (there are many other photos of Lasker and Marshall)

A photo of young Sammy Reshevsky (spelt Rzeszewski) posing for the camera: http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query...

Emil Kemeny: http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query...

In total the LOC has 46 images here: http://www.loc.gov/search/?q=chess+...

Mar-26-12  crawfb5: <twinlark> I missed the Kemeny photos, which is odd, because I'd linked to one of them in a game collection. I think I might have gone into the LoC site in an odd way.

There are two of Louis Uedemann in your LoC search that are worth considering. Uedemann was a strong player from Chicago who won a couple of Western championships (precursor to US Open) and played in the 7th American Chess Congress in St. Louis, 1904.

Mar-26-12  MarkFinan: AJ ??? <LMAJ> ?? Is this some kind of apology and peace offering ??

Come on AJ, i know its you really lol...;)

Whoever it is im genuinely thankful, and i really do appreciate it... (have the "troop" all pitched in haha)

Well.... What a lovely, kind, and generous gesture, and you've made me smile.. :)

Mar-26-12  crawfb5: <MF> I don't think there is a lot of information available on John Finan Barry beyond what is already in his bio. He was a Boston lawyer, so some Irish roots are quite possible.

Here's he's listed under <Massachusetts Births and Christenings> (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1...), but the nationality of his parents (James Barry, Bridget Grant) is not given. In looking at some census reports, a lot of Barrys of that era <were> born in Ireland, so I'd call it probable, but not confirmed.

Mar-26-12  MarkFinan: <crawfb5> My grandmother on my Dad's side of the family is still alive, although she's 85 now, but we keep in regular touch so ill *definately* ask her about this...

I remember about 20yrs ago she'd seen some advert on Television and she was going to look at our family tree etc..etc.. (i think we'd all been sent to Australia by then though lol) but she never mentioned it again, i don't even know if she'll remember, but she will definately be interested in this!

Thanks anyway, and as soon as iv'e spoke to her i'll let people here know if there's any connection, but the surname Barry is quite common, but Finan *isn't*, especially as a surname!

Very interesting...
