| Apr-07-12 | | crawfb5: Speaking of PGN uploads...
28 Apr 09 <as we are working on an alternate system to completely replace the current PGN Upload Utility we are not longer making changes to that software.> 14 Aug 10 <However we don't want to spend any more time improving the current submission software since plans are underway to replace it entirely.> 2 Oct 11 <One of the many side-effects of the Sandbox will be to revolutionize the method of game submission. For that reason, we're not interesting in spending time on tiny incremental improvements to the current upload system.> Any progress on this front? |

 | | Tabanus: <cg> I searched for "From" hoping to find Martin Severin From but no hits! Perhaps more important, I seached for "Nielsen" and got a long list (41 players) but not for example the four times Danish champion Bjorn Nielsen. It seems the list gives max 41 players? Seaching for "Jensen" or "Smith" also produces 41 players. A longer list would be helpful, at least for librarians! |

 | | Tabanus: By the way, there are two "Bjorn Nielsen" in the database which are merged. None of them seems to have a middle name. I don't know what can be done (except perhaps naming one of them "Bjoern"). |

 | | chessgames.com: <Tabanus: <cg> I searched for "From" hoping to find Martin Severin From but no hits!> That's a situation unique pretty much to M.S. From. We could take pains to work around it, but it would be a lot of work for virtually one player. It has to do with what databases call "stop words" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_w...). About Nielsen, you are right that the list is cut off, but I would think that Bjorn would make the grade. I'd be happy to assign him a rating if that helps him show up. As far as having these lists come back of unlimited length, the fear is that somebody will type in a name like "Mikhail" and receive such a long list that our server starts to overheat :) It's true that admins can access longer lists, but even theirs have a limit, albeit larger. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Tabanus: By the way, there are two "Bjorn Nielsen" in the database which are merged. None of them seems to have a middle name.> Explain the situation via correction slip(s) and our Librarian can take care of it. It will get confusing no doubt--but ultimately there is no steadfast rule that every player has to have a unique name. |

 | | chessgames.com: <crawfb5> <...the Sandbox...Any progress on this front?> Actually there is, but as you can see it is turning out to be a bigger project than originally imagined. I still believe it will be the next logical step of evolution for Chessgames. |

 | | Tabanus: <cg> Ok accepted, thanks. I'll just report the 1056 rated Nielsen to the Librarian :) |

Apr-07-12
 | | chessgames.com: 1056 ? Maybe the checkbox to click is "fishy game" more than "duplicate player" ;-) |
|
| Apr-07-12 | | Blunderdome: <AJ> I like the idea, but I'm not sure what the best measure would be to determine the "best" games. The problem with using number of kibitzes (or one problem, anyway) is that any game CG live-broadcasts is going to show up, even if it's totally unremarkable. Usually CG uses the number of times a game appears in a game collection to decide which games are "notable" (e.g. on a player's bio page), but I guess that wouldn't work for new games as no one knows them yet and most users don't add instant classics to their collections right away. The editorial board could work if you found some dedicated volunteers, but it might be limited to the round robins. I doubt anyone is going to play through and appreciate every game from Aeroflot, Gibraltar, the Russian Higher League or the World Cup. I'd be interested if anyone else has thoughts on this. |
|
| Apr-07-12 | | Blunderdome: Another problem with number of kibitzes is that it would select the games that people were likely to look at anyway. For example, at the US Championship it would probably put most of Nakamura's games at the top of the list -- which is going to direct people to the same games they would have gone to if no feature existed. It won't help you spot the brilliancies on the lower boards unless someone else already found it <and> managed to start a discussion that went on for more than a few posts. |

| Apr-08-12 | | Benzol: <chessgames.com> <Can anybody figure out which of these two scores is likely to make the most sense?
R Hernandez vs Kasparov, 1979
vis-a-vis
Hernandez vs Kasparov, 1979
An entire set of moves is omitted in one version. The reason why I ask is that Guess-the-Move is on *both* games so we have to be very careful which one we put in the backup table.> <chessgames.com> Did you finally sort this out? Hopefully my message in the spot an error category of one of the games helped you to get to the bottom of it. |
|
Apr-08-12
 | | chessgames.com: Yeah we are almost certain this one has the right score at this point R Hernandez vs Kasparov, 1979 however we have to reprocess it with regards to Guess-the-Move and all scores were lost. Oh well. |

 | | Tabanus: Hi again <cg>, for your convenience! I have put on the internet (hope the links work) pictures of Fritz Englund:

 | | WannaBe: A tournament in Loo, who would thunk it!! Is Kramnik involved?? |

 | | Annie K.: Darn your hide, Wabbit, I was going to say something about that!! :p This had better not be another Toiletgate.
Oh, those Russians...

| Apr-09-12 | | dakgootje: In the Netherlands there is the palace 'Paleis het Loo'. Which is where the royal flush comes from. |
|
| Apr-09-12 | | cro777: <WannaBe: Is Kramnik involved??> Pretty close but the "suspect" is the recreation and entertaining complex "Akvaloo", one of the largest modern aqua-complexes at the Black Sea coast of Russia, which achieved wide popularity with its developed infrastructure (calculated on reception more than 2000 visitors simultaneously). |

Apr-09-12
 | | chessgames.com: Actually instead of Chess960 we're going to do an opening thematic, breaking news coming very soon! |
|
| Apr-10-12 | | PinnedPiece: CG: What is that? The first ten moves on each side are already played? . |
|
Apr-10-12
 | | WannaBe: <PinnedPiece> Pretty much, in a nutshell, you are correct, but it may not be 10 moves, usually less, unless it's a Sicilian or Ruy line, then it's the first 50 moves. |
|
| Apr-10-12 | | cro777: <We're going to do an opening thematic> Thematic team vote chess: the game starts from a pre-defined starting position (the first moves of a certain opening). Computer aided analysis will be allowed. |

| Apr-10-12 | | Blunderdome: <This is amazing! I am sure that Anand had seen this winning method ages ago. He clearly just got tired and blundered horribly allowing something that he had so carefully prevented.
--- Short (on game 8)>
I do know what game that's referring to, but Anand has played a number of game 8's in his career. I would make it "game 8 of Anand - Topalov" if you plan to reuse it. |
