Jul-25-12  Memethecat: Hey CG, is it difficult to implement some kind of spell check/help in the search & player search boxes?

As you know there's often 2 & sometimes 3 different spellings of some players names, especially East Europeans, s & z can be interchangeable depending on the source, Nimzowitsch is a prime example but isn't a problem because he's in the drop down menu.

I've been stuck a bunch of times when typing in a name I'm reading, especially from older books.

You've probably been asked this many times, but thought I'd ask Justin Case.

Jul-25-12  hms123: <Pellgroso Patzer> Go to your preferences page Chessgames Preferences Page and check the box that says <longer list of players>. You will then find, of all things, a longer list of players in the drop down box. You will also find <Boleslavsky>, but astoundingly, not <Kotov>.

chessgames.com: The list of players on the homepage is intentionally abbreviated so that the page can load in a reasonable amount of time. We know that some people will want an enormous list of names, and that's why we have the <Longer list of players> option.

The decision as to who gets put in the lists is entirely algorithmic. Their include depends upon a formula that combines their FIDE rating and the number of games in the database.

Occasionally however the algorithm can act in error. The reason why Kotov was failing to appear in the extended list (or possibly the short list) is because we had a bogus FIDE rating on him that undoubtedly belonged to some other Alexander Kotov. That's been corrected now and I anticipate to see him on at least one of the two lists.

chessgames.com: <Hey CG, is it difficult to implement some kind of spell check/help in the search & player search boxes?>

It's hard to implement it *well* — in fact we already have some sorts of spelling help but it isn't nearly as slick as we would like it to be. There is something we call the "Translation" table which has facts like "If somebody types Nimtzowisch they probably want Nimzowitsch", but its information is rather scattered and spotty.

Anyhow it's an idea that we definitely want to implement in a more robust fashion. Until that day here are some tips:

• Use the Player Directory.

• Go to google and type your best guess at the spelling combined with "chess games" and Google can do amazing jobs at correcting your spelling. For example here I am searching for Dzinzihashvili (spelled just like that) http://www.google.com/#hl=en&safe=o...

• If you know of a famous game by the player, try to find the game instead, and then the player will follow. For instance, if you have trouble spelling Myagmarsuren, check under the most notable games of Robert James Fischer.

Jul-25-12  I play the Fred: <The only thing I would change about the POTD is that I would like to see those posts off of the <Recent Kibitzing> page. I've had a few puzzles spoiled that way.>

<CG>, any reactions to this suggestion? It could be like posts in <The World versus> games, where you have to click them to read them.

Jul-26-12  Memethecat: Thanks for the helpful tips, I have been in the Player Directory "room" in the past, but somehow managed to forget it was there, & of course a google search is obvious when you think about it, that,s why you guys are running the site & I'm just a punter. Cheers me dears.

Stonehenge: I would be handy, when doing a player search, that one only has to type the first four letters or so. There's the Player Directory of course, but that doesn't contain all players.

Just one example: Krzysztof Puszczewicz. Bit of a difficult name, so it would be handy when typing 'pusz' is enough.

Jul-26-12  I play the Fred: <<any reactions to this suggestion?> It wouldn't be a terror to implement, but you are the only person to mention it. Is anybody else is bothered by spoilers in that fashion?>

I got the idea from another poster about a year and a half ago as I recall, but I didn't appreciate the idea until recently as I have spent more time on the daily puzzles.

OhioChessFan: I have had a spoiler jump out a few times but haven't thought it worth the trouble of addressing it. I know that when in a hurry, there are times I have purposely looked for the answer to the POTD by revealing the recent kibitzing on it.

Your games are locked <again> because he administrators (rightly) determined that was the only method to stop a flame war that was making the entire website look like a bad joke.

Yes, it was that bad, and no other methods had worked- notably a week long suspension for you and your most vocal critics.

Your games pages are locked for the good of the website. It doesn't matter who's to blame for the flame war, that's irrelevant given the fact that it was out of control.

Jul-27-12  Eyal: <chessgames.com: Although tomorrow is a rest day, the game Bologan-Carlsen will take place to make up for the missed game in round 3. We hope to see you back tomorrow at 8:00 USA/Eastern for the make-up game.>

Actually this game - and the rest day - take place only on Sunday, after the 6th round which is played tomorrow. (Sounds a bit strange, but that's how they do it - see the official site's schedule on http://www.bielchessfestival.ch/upl...)

If this happens, I will probably buy another membership myself so that Chessgames feels no great loss.

I certainly won't feel any. The few times I have interacted with you, you have summarily deleted my posts or come back with some belittling, hammering retort that leaves me baffled as much as anything. You are not of a suitable temperament, in my opinion, to participate where criticism of any of your actions may occur. And that is bad bad medicine for whatever you think ails this site.

And how you could ever expect sympathy from the owners of a website whom you have reported as running a dangerous, potentially fraudulent business is far more than I will ever be able to understand.

It would be like expecting sympathy from a military policeman after hawking a loogie onto his shiny black duty boots.

.

Jul-27-12  Gregor Samsa Mendel: <PP>--You and I may not agree on much, but if you want to set up a fund to offset the monetary loss caused to CG by the departure of AJ, I'll chip in. And I bet I won't be the only one who does.
Jul-28-12  Benzol: <PinnedPiece> <Gregor Samsa Mendel> AJ says he probably won't renew his premium membership but it doesn't mean that he will leave the site completely. However, it will also mean that he can't delete other peoples posts.
